Princess Milena read that declaration with a shuddering breath. What had only been a few whispers from some passing maids had now been made plain for all to know.

 

Once again, Karl was that infant in the cradle, the one she had sat with on so many nights and tended to amid fits of wheezing coughs. It was an eerie memory, enough to send a rare chill down her rigid spine.

Edward Caius's countenance faltered as he read the missive over. "GOD be with King Karl." He only said as he signed the Lorraine and grasped upon a chained cross, hoping his prayers for the Haeseni people be answered.

Irena, having hoped to catch Karl as their paths crossed as they so often did, perused the publication with features wrought with worry. She recalled their last exchange, fleeting if anything. "For Karl's health." she prayed, her voice low, preparing a small basket of gifts to be delivered to the King's chambers.

Erika returned from her year abroad in the Petra, conducting research for her latest publication. Her last long trip for a while, for she knew, upon arriving back in the city, that her world would change.

 

I will be here waiting when you journey back, and then we will move forward, together.

 

She could still feel the warmth of his hand in hers, the ghost of a touch. How frail he had looked on that cot in Kazan, without the crown and the armour. No number of amberiddle tokens, no balancing of the humours, could cure him of this.

 

Erika could only pray the healers in Ba’as could do what northern medicine could not. Make him whole, and return him to her.

John II produced a weary sigh as news of the Barbovic King's health reached the south. "May God be with you, Karl," he whispered, praying in earnest for his friend and the Haeseni people.
