Hello! This is a simple guide on a bunch of things… basically, a roleplay guide. In all honesty, I'm very nervous to post this because if I do… I'm scared I’ll get jumped in the comments. But I'll still try! I've been working on this document since 1/31/25.

However! Remember, roleplay however you want, as long as it follows the rules.

This guide includes some of my own opinions, so please don’t be afraid to share yours!

The Separation Between RP and OOC

A common issue I see nowadays is that we take things that happen in roleplay (IRP) to heart OOCly. I think this mainly happens because we’ve stopped properly teaching people how to separate OOC and IRP from each other.

 

a reminder for everyone… THIS IS JUST A GAME! Don’t take in-character events personally. At the end of the day, you have a home to go back to, a house, a family, and maybe even your hobbies. 

 

MCRP is meant to be fun, but I've seen people take it so seriously that it starts consuming their real lives, Neglecting school, friendships, and even their mental health. At the end of the day, this is just a game. Don’t let it become your entire world, or you’ll risk losing things that matter. 

 

Your life does not revolve around MCRP. Take breaks. RP is meant to be considered an outlet, if you feel like there's a chance you might be taking what's happening IRP to heart, it's always okay to take a step back and reserve yourself for a bit, reflect, and everything else.

On top of that, you also need to understand that. . . there will be rude characters IRP. You might run into literal in-character fascists. And the first thing I advise you not to do? Don’t go messaging the player accusing them of being a fascist, homophobe, transphobe, racist- whatever the hell else- just because their character plays that role. Because I guarantee you, 99.99% of the time, they are not.

 

Separate the character from the player. No one deserves OOC harassment for something their character did.

 

In the case, that person indeed does actually follow their character's beliefs.. and genuinely does hold a dislike for certain groups.. Don’t be afraid to simply walk away from them if you’re speaking with them OOCly and want to handle the situation differently. Ultimately, the only way to stop interacting with them in RP is to end the interaction IRP.

 

Let characters be flawed. Flawed characters create amazing roleplay. They create conflict, they create stories, and they create depth. And that’s what makes roleplay good.

 

This brings us to our next subject.

 

LET CONFLICT HAPPEN IN ROLEPLAY!

One major issue I see is players resolving conflict too quickly, and then complaining that roleplay feels boring. The reason? People are often too quick to shut down villains or challenges instead of letting the story unfold.
 

I get it, no one wants to "lose." But conflict is the heart of roleplay. If every problem is solved instantly by just killing the villain, of course, it’s going to feel repetitive!

Don’t be afraid to let your character make mistakes or get into trouble. Let moments build, let stories develop, and don’t be afraid of a little chaos. Some of the best roleplay comes from taking risks.

 

Skins.

 

Your character's skin is the first impression you give others. A well-made, thematic skin can make your roleplay experience better. Or not, it's fine

 

Here are a few general guidelines:

 

 Use lore-friendly medieval skins (Planet Minecraft has great options)

 Avoid anime-style skins (They’re often seen as immersion-breaking)

 

 No third-party media characters (Genshin Impact, Naruto, etc.)

No random wings, horns, or halos unless your character Unless with proper ST approval whether through CA or MA applications

I highly suggest staying far away from NameMC and instead looking into the medieval section for skins. A much better resource? Planet Minecraft (PMC).

Though a tip I am scared to approach.. 

 

a small tip: 2x1 pixel eyes are the standard for LOTC, while 2x2 eyes tend to give a more anime-like appearance, which can sometimes make a skin feel out of place.

Here’s an example of 2x1 eyes, they’re the more common choice!

Main Character Syndrome

I heavily suggest that you check out Critter’s guide on how to have a safe RP

Honestly? I can’t even be mad at most players when they develop this syndrome. Because everyone gets it at some point! Whether you just started RP this year or have been around for ages, you’ve likely experienced it. Hell, even when I first started MCRP, I had a little bit of Main Character Syndrome! It happens!

 

What is Main Character Syndrome?

Main Character Syndrome in roleplay happens when a player treats their character like they are the centre of the universe. as if they’re the protagonist in a story where everyone else is just a side character.

 

“But, Cheesy? What are some examples of Main Character Syndrome?”

 

• You’re always the Hero (or the Victim).

 

• Now, I’m not gonna blame you if your character occasionally falls into horrible situations. It happens. But does your character have to be the most tragic and misunderstood in every scenario?

 

• Likewise, your character doesn’t always have to be the one to save the day. Sometimes, victory is a group effort.

 

• Ignoring Consequences.
  • Your character never suffers any real setbacks. Even when they should. If something bad happens? They shrug it off like it’s nothing.

 

• Let your characters be flawed!
• Sometimes, they need to suffer actual consequences and grow from them.

 

• Stealing the Spotlight.
  • Every scene? Somehow, it becomes all about them. Even when it’s someone else’s moment, they force the attention back onto themselves.

 

• Refusing to Lose.
  • Your character is never bested, outsmarted, or defeated. In combat? They dodge every attack. In social RP? They always have the last word. They powergaming to avoid losing.

 

• Lack of Collaboration.
  • You treat roleplay like your personal story rather than a shared experience. 
    • Other players feel like NPCs instead of equals.
    •  

"But Cheeseyyyy, what’s wrong with that??"

 

A few simple reasons why Main Character Syndrome is a problem:

It makes roleplay less fun for everyone else.

It stifles creativity by shutting down good storytelling opportunities.

It often leads to OOC drama, especially when players get upset if things don’t go their way

 

"But Cheeseyyyy, how do I avoid it?"

 

 Let your character fail, and grow from their experiences.

 

 Remember that every character matters. Not just yours.

 

 Be open to collaborative storytelling rather than controlling everything.

 

 Recognize that not every event has to revolve around you. Sometimes, playing a supporting role makes the event even better.

 

Main Character Syndrome happens! I’m not gonna be upset every time it does because everyone. Whether new to MCRP or a veteran.has experienced it at some point.

 

The important thing? We grow out of it.

How to Avoid “One-Liners.”

“Cheesey, what is a one-liner?”

 

A one-liner is when a player responds in short, lazy sentences that give little to no description, emotion, or effort.

 

Examples of A One Liner.

Man… What am I meant to do with that? :(

 

And I understand the whole concept of more characters being more reserved, or less chatty. One-liners are fine and can fit the character's personality. As long as they’re not a constant block to other players trying to engage.

 

Don’t be afraid to represent characters through facial expressions or anything! It’s just best suggested, depending on the context, and the setting you’re in.. that it would be best to avoid one-liners.  It’s all about balancing it with the overall flow of the current scene.

Why Are One- Liners bad?

[1] They kill Immersion. 

 

• If you’re giving minimal effort, it makes it hard for others to engage.

 

[2] They make it hard to respond

 

• How am I supposed to react to “She frowns.” What does that tell me about your character? What does that tell me about the story you’re trying to convey about the person you’re presenting?

 

[3] They Ruin the roleplay flow.

 

• Mcrp is about creating stories. If you’re tossing in dry, lazy responses... It doesn’t really show me that you’re invested in roleplay. 

 

[4] They make you forgettable!

 

• Do you want people to remember your character? To Respect your RP? Then give them something to work with! 

 

How to FIX one Liners.

 

Try something out! With a friend or two, Instead of.. 

He nods. "Okay."

Try:

A slow, solemn nod left him as his gaze moved across the dimly lit tavern. "Okay," he murmured, A huff escaping from his nose.

She frowns.

 

Try:

 

Her lips pressed into a thin line, brows knitting together. That wasn’t the answer she expected, nor the one she wanted.

 

He leans against the wall.

 

Try:

He leaned against the worn stone wall, fingers tapping idly against the hilt of his blade as he listened.

 

"But Cheeseyyy, what if I just don’t have much to say?"

 

That’s fine! Not every emote has to be a five-paragraph essay. The goal isn’t to write a novel, but to give enough for the other play to respond, something to actually work with. 
 

 

How to make interesting characters.

(And how to make Complex roleplay..)

A Common archetype that has been displayed, even from the start of Lotc, can be the Broody Edgelord, or the Tragic Orphan, even the Stoic Knight! 

 

These archetypes can be fun, but if your character is just that, then they’re forgettable, in all honest truth.. There's nothing wrong for aiming for these types of archetypes, but when having them make sure to expand upon them. 

 

A good character has layers. Even the most serious or dark characters should have quirks, opinions, fears, and their own flaws. 

 

Instead of; 

 

“A stoic warrior who never talks and just stands in the back of the room with crossed arms.”

 

Let’s try.. 

 

A war veteran! He’s a bit of an alcoholic and tells exaggerated stories to impress people, but he’s actually lying, just a little, to make himself seem even more appealing. He mainly does things to gain the approval of others, and so on.

 

Stop trying to make your character the absolute best at the start! Develop them! 

An example can be; 

 

A 17-year-old assassin who has NEVER lost a fight and is SOMEHOW immune to poison without any RP happening to explain that. 

 

Let’s turn that into a ;

 

A 17-year-old who’s still trying to learn the ropes of how to get into mercenary-ship, and is having to learn street smarts from the people around him currently in roleplay. He's constantly over his head when it comes to facing actual threats due to how dumb confidence he holds! 

 

It’s up to YOU and the other people AROUND YOU to build your IRP character, and you have to have depth for that! That’s what pulls people to your characters! Give your character flaws! Give your character’s Strengths! 

 

No one is perfect, No character is perfect. 

 

Stubbornness → Gets them into arguments.

Self-Doubt → Freezes up in high-pressure moments.

Impulsiveness → Says or does things that cause major problems

 

 

Character Growth.

 

This is a continuation of the “interesting characters” section. 

Static and dynamic character growth, some of you might recognize these terms and what inspired me to make this document, haha.

These terms aren’t used often, but I’m referencing them as examples from when I was younger, so don’t worry too much about using them yourself.

A static character is one that remains mostly unchanged. They have no intention of shifting their beliefs or morals and stand firm in their convictions.

For example, a high elf who firmly believes that humans and other races are inferior, despite receiving kindness and gifts from them, remains unmoved in their opinion.

A dynamic character, on the other hand, evolves, whether slowly or dramatically over time.

For instance, a woman who works in a tavern and has always rejected religion might gradually begin researching it due to the influences of those around her, leading her to change her perspective. 

 There is nothing wrong with having a static or dynamic character, this is just to display the different character growths. At the end of the day, choose what’s best for you. Remaining static might make sense for your character’s beliefs and morals, but also don’t ever stop to think about your character’s hardships and how they would affect and influence them.

 

HOW TO FIND RP! 

 

For as long as I’ve been on LOTC, finding roleplay has gotten harder and harder. It’s only become a little less hard since we got /realm activity. I remember being younger and just asking in OOC why we didn’t have the realm activity thing, and everyone would be like: 🤷

Either way, finding RP can be done in various ways. Here are some:

Naturally

This means two or more characters met each other spontaneously, either through tavern roleplay or meeting on the street. The con of this is that a lot of people don’t meet this way nowadays, and it mostly just turns into a jumping-around simulator for people, usually because they’re on call, ranting, or talking to someone.

Arranged

READ INTO THE METAPLAY SECTION BEFORE YOU BRANCH ONTO THIS..

This one right now is currently problematic! But arranged roleplay is when two people plan to meet in roleplay. Personally? I see nothing wrong with it, as long as you don’t plan out your entire interaction with someone and instead just go, “Hey!! Your character seems cool! Wanna make our characters chit-chat?” Then personally, I don’t care, it’s just another form of RP.

Events and Roleplay

MY PERSONAL FAVORITE! This is when your character is invited to events to come and roleplay with other characters! And it doesn’t have to be just you that’s personally invited, it could be a ball in another nation, an archery contest somewhere else! Anything that gets that ball rolling with your character! They’re almost always public missives and such, so don’t be afraid to check out events from different nations. 

 

METAPLAY

How to Avoid Metaplay is a difficult topic at the time I’m writing this. The current LOTC community is in uproar, trying to figure out what counts as metaplay and what doesn’t. As a result, I highly suggest reading over this guide made by TOFFEE, as of the time I’m writing this:

It’s alright to joke a little but remember, this is a roleplay server! It ruins the general atmosphere and contributes almost nothing to the server.

“Nothing ever happens,” people say after memeing around IRP…

Don’t be afraid to create roleplay if you’re bored, just don’t ruin your own flow.

“But Cheesey? What counts as meme RP?”

These answers were provided by people who gave feedback on this document:

“To me? Running around and smacking people.”

“Meme RP is literally troll personas, troll behavior- being annoying just for the sake of being annoying.”

“Smacking or killing people way too much after they’ve told you to stop.”

“Joking about someone’s emote in LOOC, spamming jokes, or making ‘hilarious’ comments too much.”

“Making your character act like someone they aren’t meant to be unless they have a trauma check or a disguise.” - “If you’re in VC having a serious moment, but then break it down by saying, ‘What if my persona did this or said this?’ a few times, it’s chill and funny. But if you do it every day or every minute, it ruins any chance of having a serious, good RP.” - “Okay, so to be clear: Some jokes are okay, you know? It’s whatever. But doing it far too many times takes the fun out of it.”

“I feel like meme RP is using today’s slang terms.”

“Depends. If someone is avoiding RP by memeing or consistently using meme RP to dodge serious RP, it’s usually extremely situational.”

What’s YOUR POV on meme RP?

Meme RP should be classified as goofing around IRP, but to the extreme, where it becomes entirely satirical. Meme RP is annoying, yeah, but just do it on your own time with your own friends. You can walk up to me and emote “Salutations Huzz” and as long as you void it instantly afterwards, idc.

Following this, please refrain from using modern slang in RP. Technically, there’s nothing wrong with it, but if I see your character calling someone “bruh” and responding with “L,” there’s a 90%  chance someone will walk away from your RP.

 

 

Combat Roleplay

A very big thing for combat roleplay lately is the lack of Good faith roleplay, and more so the advancement of power gaming.. and Powergaming can happen as an accident! and this is why during the time I'm writing this, funnily enough, Someone had just posted the combat roleplay guide! CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this document is an entire mess and was created solely because I was bored, and I kept hearing the same complaints from old heads that were genuinely understandable.

Reminder: You can roleplay however you want on this server, and I can’t control you. However, this is entirely to teach the common ideals that most MCRPERS have for roleplay.. there's been a lack of actual roleplay and more so the spread of “nothing ever happens..”

I'm really hoping this doesn't come out the wrong way with people.. haha I've rewritten this like 3 times cause I've heard people tell me I'll probably get backlash for posting for the first draft. But, I'll try nevertheless
