Mutilators, Kidnappers, Liars—A Safety Warning

TWO SAINT'S WEEKS AGO my brother was kidnapped by Haelunor. I have held my tongue on the matter because my brother was not mistreated and because I had hoped to form a diplomatic relationship with the nation. But after the events of today I cannot in good conscience keep silent when there is a very real danger that others should be warned against.

I strongly advise that anyone reading this avoid travel or trade with Haelunor. They have proven several times that they are dangerous and have a concerning lack of moral judgement—I think most people will agree that there is nothing justifiable about kidnapping a child, nor kidnapping and maiming a disabled man. These actions, notably, were completely unprovoked.

Should you read the missive sent out by Haelunor’s Sohaer two saint’s weeks ago, you will see their claims to have found my brother abandoned on the roads. They claim that we neglected him, but they are willing to give us a ‘second chance’. Obviously, they wanted anyone who read the missive to believe they were doing the right thing by saving an abandoned child.

What really happened? Funny you should ask. The truth is that my brother had left the city to visit friends of ours in a different nation, and the citizens of Haelunor grabbed him while he was hardly five hundred feet outside our gates. They then demanded a ransom of five hundred mina, by which we would ‘show him we cared’.

When my aunt and I arrived in Haelunor, we found my brother well taken care of. That does not, however, change the fact that they kidnapped him. They refused to let my brother leave unless we paid his ransom. Furthermore we were met with outright aggression and threats by one of their members, who made to levy his blade against a woman and three children. This very man would not even give his name, which I find a sign of either shame or cowardice. My aunt, an incredibly selfless woman, took my brother’s place and paid her own ransom—yet they claim their ransom was met with silence, that we don't care for our people or children. An outright lie, considering they are five hundred mina richer for my brother's kidnapping.

As I have said—though I felt this situation was disgusting, I write publicly about it because I appreciated the kindness afforded to my brother while he was there and because I wanted to have a good relationship with the nation.

But tonight I received a new missive. They kidnapped another of our members, but that is not the worst of it. They neglected to tell the whole story, though the missive was damning in it's own right.

The citizens of Haelunor, a state whose own leader told me it strives for a peaceful reputation, launched a raid on my home. During this raid they captured my father, who is recovering from the loss of his leg. I sense a pattern here—they ‘saved’ my brother from abandonment on the side of the road. So too they also ‘saved’ my poor father from abandonment inside of our own kingdom!

No. The citizens of Haelunor kidnapped a disabled man, took him to their city, and severed his hand from his body. Had Sigismund De Lyons not taken his place, my father would have bled out and died. Even as I write this, he lies unconscious in a clinic bed and I fear for his recovery.

They then demanded a six hundred mina ransom for the return of Sigismund. Imagine my shock when I arrived at Haelunor to offer what little mina I had, and heard them warning newcomers not to ‘disturb their city's peace’.

Worse—during the ransom of Sigismund they spoke of the intent to kill both myself, still a child, and my aunt. If we had not paid the ransom at the instant we did, they would have murdered us in cold blood. They claim that they value the lives of children and that they would never kill one—but they made clear their intentions to murder me. Do not make the assumption that if your child is taken by Haelunor, they are safe.

I put out this missive to earnestly warn others of the exploitative nature of Haelunor. To any parents, be wary. They will not hesitate to take your children off of the roads and then claim that by capturing an innocent child, they are doing the right thing. To anyone who suffers chronic injury or disability, know that they will have no mercy upon you.

It does not matter your relationship to them, nor if you've done nothing to provoke them, nor your status in life. If they see an opportunity, they will take you.

These are dangerous times and I know many people are reeling from the recent war. Please take heed and remain safe. Don't travel to Haelunor. Watch for their members on the road by your cities. Keep your children close.

“Though a thief may find refuge and the blasphemer speak softly, the Lord’s eye is cast over all sin.” The Scroll of Spirit, 3:14.

The Devil in Black read this, and his fury grew hot. He decides he would write a few letters. Haelun'or deserved to burn to the ground. He never thought he could hold such anger towards a single nation, but now it was clear. There was no justice that could come to them that isn't paid in blood.

A letter penned with glittering ink was pinned to the doors of Aurus @Montgomery Cobra and Sigismund @tcs_tonsils_. It read:

“I will make all prosthetics for free; they can be metal, or replaced with flesh. All you have to do is write.

"******* Spoon Ears."

The Okarir'tir, Theveus Sythaerin found the missive at his doorstep. A grin, and then a laugh as his eyes scanned the missive

"These Balianites lie, and they lie, and they lie. It is almost as natural as talking to them!" His laugh growing in intensity. The missive burning in his hands as he connected to the void. "They say we are barbaric. We have been nothing but accommodating, letting them spit, and scream, and shout, and be all manners of unkindly at our own gates. We are at war, and they scream because of a single lost hand? Much less  to mention the fact they called /US/ Knife Ears."  The elf would stop, his eyes shutting as he took a deep breath

After a moment, they would open once more. "Fine then. If this is how they want to play, I will show them what true terror can be."

Aurellius Greye lays motionless in the Balian clinic bed. He was already missing an entire left leg and has trouble getting around the city with his homemade wooden crutch. He would now have even more trouble as he did not have the left hand to support himself on the crutch.

The high elf of Haelun'or Seth shook his head lightly. "They realize we are at war, right? Because as the only faction they did not surrender. The goal is obvious. To break the will of Balian to end the war early."

Balian’s Amiratus thinks about all the children Balian’s kidnapped due to being at war with Haelun’or (0), and all the elves they’ve mutilated (also 0). She sighs aloud to herself in her study, “What a wicked thing wars are, especially when all we want is to maintain autonomy…. Ea hope Lord Sigismund is doin’ alright.”

"This is the meaning of war; taking limbs and lives you'd otherwise need not take."

Valindra uttered as she peered across the city from the safety of the skies above. Rather than the spear she'd wielded in battle, the 'thill nursed a glass of Visaj red in one hand, and the missive in the other, lips pursed and brow worried in contemplation.  It had so far been a conflict easily fought by a State that would have otherwise sat dormant and impurely idle.  Her mind wandered still to her people once peaceful, now trained and geared for war by a woman they once sought to destroy, formerly of a culture they'd once see eradicated in its entirety.

"If I am to host mali'fenn blood- I ought to be thankful that I am putting it to the best possible use. Perhaps my former kin were right in that I was always destined for the battlefield-- just as a leader rather than the glorified meatshield they'd otherwise have me be."

Down the 'thill soared, landing gracefully upon the streets below within the safety of the barracks.

".. It is odd that they could end all of this violence if only they saw sense and surrendered. The rest of humanity isn't so bad."

Aurus, still at his father's side in the nation of Balian which had launched 0 raids and kidnapped 0 individuals despite being at war, wondered if it was the strategy of all conquering nations to kidnap children and the disabled.

A certain high elf ponders and furrows his brow.

"They could surrender.. - After all, is it not the logical thing to do, disabling those who might even think of swinging a sword by taking their hands? Atleast until their will is broken.." The elf commented idly to his kin, Malaurir Seth Calith.@Samler

The elf clicks his tongue, eyes downcast. "Maybe one day, it can't be helped that they don't realize their ignorance, that they are below even us.."

Johanna must be going mad, as she recalls the only violence put forth to those of Haelu'nor was simply verbal, whereas the elves joined a war because the Balianese were simply using a road... If the Sohaer had any sense, such 'violence' could have been avoided with a simple letter, a simple 'please do not use our roads', rather, the Sohaer is so eager to join in on bloodshed she'd take the use of roads as the perfect excuse to join a war that Haelu'nor had no reason to be in, kidnap children, and further disable an already crippled man after snatching him from his home.
