Voidstalking: Invasion

OLD:

Spoiler

[Spell] [Combat] - Invasion

Fool’s tales make believe that one always invites an esteemed guest within their home- intent aside, they could never break in by force. Benevolent is the beyond to grant one such capabilities to breach into the veil of one’s mind- an uninvited benefactor to enlighten the unknowing.

A Voidstalker may, upon a target bearing an intelligent mind, after [1 Connect + 1 Charge + 1 Cast] emotes, afflict them with whispers, thoughts, hallucinations, or impulses considered intrusive and unwelcome - Interrupting any focus one may have held with certainty.

Redlines

-Invasion would interrupt any form of focus-intensive activity (Spellcasting, bow-archery, concentration/channels, etc)

-Invasion may only target creatures bearing more-than-lesser souls. This means any creature other than plants and animals.
- This spell constitutes a disconnection from connection-based magics such as Druidism, Naztherak, and voidal magic. The target will have to reconnect before they are able to resume using / casting magic.

-Invasion’s impulses and thoughts would not be compulsory, but would be akin to an incredible “want”, or “tug” to do something.

-Any effects of this spell are up to the target upon how they would react.

-The voices invading one's mind are either coherent or incoherent by choice of the target. It is an uncontrolled, temporary-invasion by the secondary consciousness upon another foreign psyche and not the voidstalker projecting to another.

-Invasion would last for one emote in combat, or a minute in non-combat narrative.

-A Voidstalker may move and react at half-pace while casting Invasion.

-Invasion is only accessible and castable by one with a Secondary Consciousness.

- When a Voidstalker casts "invasion", the target of the spell will begin to hear harmless, alien whispers. In addition, violent energies in the color of the Voidstalker's aura will begin to collect around their hands or arcane focus as though conjuring a hazy cloud, as well as appearing manifesting above or around the head of the target.

-Requires line of sight and has a maximum range of [20] blocks.

The Second Mind’s influence grows with each casting of Invasion. Upon the third casting the Voidstalker would suffer from the Rapture effect which depletes their mental barrier afforded to them within the ability: Ascension of Consciousness. Triggering a Rapture while this barrier is depleted causes the Voidstalker to become stunned for [1] emote as their attempts to invade backfire.

Redlines

-Invasion would interrupt any form of focus-intensive activity (Spellcasting, bow-archery, concentration/channels, etc)

- The Rapture effect occurs after the third casting of Invasion within an encounter. Depleting the mental barrier the first time it is triggered and causing a full 1 emote stun anytime it is triggered while the mental barrier is depleted. This stun appears as an ethereal mind spike that pierces from the head of the Voidstalker, matching the color of their aura.

-Requires line of sight and has a maximum range of [20] blocks.

PURPOSE:

Spoiler

Inviting the second mind into your character’s mind should have tangible effects that fit the theme. At the moment most of the effects it causes may be self-roleplayed and avoided. I felt that Invasion was ripe for abuse in its ability to be cast continuously for a low cost, effectively pinning down a target mentally for as long as they choose. I think the theming of the spell works just fine so instead I added in the Rapture effect to curtail any possible spam that may occur while adding in a tangible effect for using the powers of the second mind. A dark void spell should have an effect on the one casting it.

As a Voidstalker player, I think that the feat is in a good place.

HOWEVER I think this is a good addition and support it
+1

Flavorful consequences like this are entirely acceptable.

Voidstalkers don't already have a once-per-combat or similar limiter on Invasion, their unavoidable, two-emote concentration breaking spell?

Not that I can tell. Wither has limitations though they aren't actually once-per-combat either. If Invasion did have these limitations I suppose this amendment would be redundant, or even possibly considered a buff.

If you actually crped instead of just theorycrafting on discord you’d realize it isn’t that crazy. Even in the scenario you listed where they just pin down their opponent (which any opponent a voidstalker faces will be physically stronger than them and can just slap them) the voidstalker wouldn’t be able to do anything else and would just be depleting their mana. You can get far better results like any other spell, not to mention the entirety of illusion. Like no voidstalkers really touch this spell, i think I used it a total of one time in my years of playing.

Don’t listen to baked they don’t actually CRP either and are the primetime reason voidal lore has become what it is.

A majority of voidal lore exists in the state it does because of reactionary changes. It’s gunna be rough fixing them

I think this is a cool change but kind of unneeded. i truly dont think invasion has ever been used like this as it keeps the voidstalker busy anyhow while casting it

It's three emotes including connection and LOS can be broken by simply standing behind a solid object

Hey did you know that apparently ice shield and ice wall blocks line of sight? Don't think about why I'm pushing this information out here.

I actually really like this change thematically its a debuff that really fits the theme of the magic, if anything it should be one less before you hit your mind barrier.

I am here to comment a thought from my head. I like artificers.

The idea here is not necessarily to nerf the spell into oblivion but rather use it to better clarify the theming of the feat while addressing balancing concerns.

With that said I thought I'd share the second part of the amendment that I ended up leaving out. For use in discussion.

This lore has been denied.

This was taken to an internal vote, and was denied.
