Malinor And Its Future

Going to give a little update here.

Overall things have been improving greatly in recent weeks. Activity is at an all time high and I have everyone to thank for that. Whether it be a prince, sentinel, citizen, or visitor (good and bad!) you all have helped shaped the scene. For that you have my thanks.

Recently our laws have changed to be a bit stricter and such. And I think many do not understand that purpose of this. About a month or so ago. A couple of villains brought up the issue that over all they were getting away with things without repercussions. This wasn't just in Malinor, but in Asulon in general.

Rules were changed in the villain rules to allow for provoked killings. And under the guidance of the VAT, I had the Sentinels change their approach to dealing with trouble makers. Punishments were harsh and severe because quite frankly, the villains asked for it.

Also I did not make the decision arbitrarily. ICly the elves have suffered in Asulon. They are surrounded by enemies despite the isolation from the mainland. Orcs, humans, dwarves, elves, mori, kha, have all at some point in time committed brutal acts upon Malinorian citizens. I understand that some of these actions could or may not have been provoked, but as with any society, the elves feel they are in the right and react accordingly.

With that said, they are more sensitive to threats and insults, and in many cases almost warlike. I know many think this is un-elflike. However, the elves decided on a whole (as in it wasn't just my decision, but that of the council and the citizens) to take a more forceful approach in order to survive, at least in their eyes. Whether this is the right or wrong thing is actually irrelevant. This is a RP server and the characters decide actions for good or ill, they won't know the consequences even if we as the players do OOCly.

I have tried to keep an aura of somewhat tolerance through all of the ordeals. At least as best I can make my character do so. But as I have said before, IC interactions are subject to the Social-economical-political situations at the given time and views and opinions of the characters.

But even through the strife I think we have made some headways and even managed to keep our elven image. We're still far more tolerable of outsiders then many other nations, with the exception of those that are specifically multicultural. Its not ever going to be perfect, as we are not only an elven nation, but THE elven nation. So there will not be any non-elves on our council :P

Economically we have done very well. The elves have conceived a way for everyone to be allowed to pitch in and work and own a home for reasonable prices. It works under a merit based system that effectively eliminated poverty. I never personally saw a reason for elves to have peasants anyway.

Socially the merit system comes into play as well. The more useful one makes themselves, the more authority and more prestige they get. But also they are expected to meet their new responsibilities that goes with it. At first I feared that without the carrot on the stick approach that is with normal nobilities, that it wouldn't attract many. But the fact of the matter is it did attract players and the right sort at that.

Therefor we have a number of new princes: Glylith, Darion (formally), and even a Princess, Elene.

All this success is a double edged sword. We're simply going to need to expand in order to hold the number of people we get in. I've been stricter on the eviction and repossessions of homes so that only active characters have homes. But this is a short term fix that will eventually wear out. The good news is, I can focus on expansion while the number of princes can focus on what I normally get swamped with.

In addition, I want to address the ugly side of success. Jealousy and envy. Normally if this was something that was totally IC, I wouldn't care to even mention it. But the fact of the matter is, there are those on this server that are jealous of our successes and hate us for it, or even just myself specifically.

If you are one of these people, I know who you are. The GMs know who you are. If you conduct yourselves poorly, you'll be punished for it. Be it banning, warnings, VA revocations, ect. What you're doing isn't secret, your 'friends' are tattling on you.

I won't name names here as to avoid devolving this thread. But I will give at least one example of an enimity against me. I had one individual ask me OOCly to be a prince in TS. I told him that he would need to persue it ICly. He complained that "well thats impossible" and that I should "just make him a prince". I tried to give them advice on how to do it, they 'agreed' but instead he has then since caused a number of ingame issues that of course have all failed. I'm sorry, but I cannot simply "make someone a prince" oocly. I don't have the power to. All princes are elected by the council ICly. Thats just how it is. But as you can see, part of the conflicts we see are because someone is blaming me for something out of my control.

That is only one example, but there is a number of other OOC sparked hatreds. Mostly from villains not expecting the sort of order and control that is initiated in Malinor. I'd figure I'd bring them to light so everyone sort of understands what is going on. Its nothing to be entirely concerned with. As I said, I have the GMs and VAT working to filter it out.

On a more informative note. I have seen and heard of druids and such trying to commune with the Elder Tree of Normandor. I'm going to give a little heads up to these individuals about the origin of the tree.

It was a special seed brought to Asulon by Bravepaw and his band (the founders of Normandor). This seed was planted in a rift to the void itself. The magical powers of the void (same place mages get their arcane powers from) grew the tree as the seed as its heart. The hollowing was done by the magical growth, no elf actually hollowed the tree itself. The tree is not a natural growth and probably cannot be communed with by druids (though mages could probably do something similar, though for obvious reasons, the 'feelings' they receive will be perceived differently).

So for any druids saying they feel the tree's 'pain' they are wrong (or simply lying, and the elves of Normandor will know that). The tree grew in the current shape it is in and due to its unnatural nature, it wouldn't feel the pains normal trees would (think of it as a really big artificial x-mas tree). Though it is 'alive' in the sense of the word, but not in the same means that a normal tree is.

This lore can be found in the Normandor section of the wiki.

===OOC===

I have a few ideas.

First one that I have had for quite a while now is the construction of two sister islands to the farming island. The two islands would be like the farming island where they are accessed through Normandor. As an example: We could move the the gaurds, army, and jail to one of the islands, and make the other island the Mage's college ((I like the one we have now it's just in an awkward spot in my opinion.)) There can even be more housing on these islands with distinctly different housing styles on them. ((One could be High Elven style or something of the sort.))

I was reading the post about the Mage library and thought that the Forest of Malinor would be a great place for such a thing. The forest feels like an empty pit and it would be nice if something was in it.

There actually is a Barracks already, in a cave under the tree. I think the currant Barracks looks really bad, with massive straight walls of sandstone. My ideas are to move back to the Old Barracks, or at least beautify the currant one. Also, more islands would be amazing. I think we should do something about the dining hall too. It's never used (at least to my knowledge) and something else useful could be put there.

Normandor is sort of on hold with any construction efforts. To put it quite simply the tree isle is far too laggy to warrant any resources or time devoted to it currently. We're currently working on another city that will hopefully be open to everyone within the coming weeks.

Sythra,

If you need any help with the building process let me know.

I would love to have input on any military installations in the new city

Firstly what is this Elder Empire with it's capital city Wilvanash in the middle of Malinor lands?

So we are going to abandon Nomador or how it will work?

OCC: are you working on Wilvanash or Sylvenor?

Also I myself and probably other city workers and citizens would like to help in any way we can.

Wilvanash is not an elven city nor part of Malinor.

Also as an update for the city workers. I apologize for the quotas not being collected and assessed, that will happen this evening after I get back from class. Been a pretty hectic week and weekend with classes and homework.

(so if you haven't filled a quota for last week, you've got 6hrs to do so!)

When will Sylvenor be ready for habitation? As soon as it is, the Theatre's going up, and I'm going to try to have a show 2-3 times a week this time around. That might just attract more people. Maybe.

RP:

*There is a note fastened above Ada's quota chest*

Greetings you might or might not know who I am beyond a name over a box, but I have some concerns. First of which is that the farms are a tad chaotic in their design. It is pleasing to the eye but there are ways it's production could be improved. Secondly is safety, I don't think it's much to ask that a few more torches or such be placed so as to negate the spawn of evil creators that lurk in the shadows. As well as the fact that the wheat is diseased and may not be safe. Third is the supplies it's as simple as there are next to none, it would be wonderful that if while your collecting quotas that you pay a quick visit to the public supply area just to see that there is enough. Thank you for your time your devoted farmer, Ada Angelina Rose.

OOC:

I've seen a melon with four stalks attached to it on multiple occasions. I do a lot of mc farming outside of lotc and know a good farm from a farm that looks nice. My character is 100% peaceful she wont even attack mobs and it annoys me that there are slimes all over. There is practically nothing in the public supply chests other then a few slabs and leaves and a hat can something please be done about that. I'm always in Normander Ada said in rp "I live and work here in Normander so I have little reason to wander" she hardly ever leaves the city walls and the only times she does it's to check for druids in the grove. I'd also like to see a better library if that's doable come on we're elves I think our capital should have more that 8 books in our library. If I'm on line I'll almost definitely be in Normander the best time to find me ig is at night just beyond the flee market star gazing. Again thank you for your time this is just a few things I'd like to see.

This would be really hard to do... but to make a more RP based place, for example a city square in the centre. There could be a few select shops in it, for example an inn of sorts, this would let people, when they're not doing much go to the centre. Just an idea though, an expensive one..

I personally believe Laurelin was so successful because of how small it was- you could find the Princess' house within 50 blocks of the entrance, the Druid grove was 100 blocks from the entrance, and there would always be somebody near the gates. I'd prefer if we did try to "shrink" the city in 3.0, make it smaller and more confined like Laurelin used to be. This is my two-cents.

Laurelin was actually much much larger than Normandor. The area you remember was the northern district. It was added on after Laurelin got larger.

Also not all of the Princes and Princesses lived there. Sythra if you remember lived outside Sister City near a beach (which was actually wilds).
