ForkBeard Clan: History of the ForkBeards

*Arlond sits down at the large table in the ForkBeard conference room, with a large, empty book, a quill, and several jars of ink resting on the table in front of him. Torbek sits to his left, Rusty to his right, and Lokri across from him. Arlond drags his chair closer to the table and picks up the raven-feather quill. “Where shuld ah start?” Arlond asks his brothers.

“Hm…da beginning, ah s’pose.” Torbek answers, lightly biting on the end of his pipe.

“Start wit’ ‘ow weh grew up” Rusty says, leaning back into his chair. Arlond nods, and picks up the quill. He opens the heavy, leather bound book to the first, blank page, and places the quill tip to the paper. He starts to write.*

Where should I start? I guess with our parents. Our mother, Lidasa, left our father, Gofeki, shortly after the birth of Lokri. Our father was stunned by her departure, and spent a lot of his time in the mines, and in the dwarven cities of Aegis, where he had many friends. Despite our father’s popularity, the ForkBeards were a poor family, only living on what they could catch, grow, and occasionally buy. Our lack of minas meant that we grew up without many toys, being forced to either create our own toys, or come up with games. As we grew older, we each learnt our own trade, whether it be in the mineshafts with our father, in the nearby forest, or in a smithy making tools and weapons. For several years, we went on like this, each dwarf training their respective skills. With all the brothers working in the respective fields, selling the materials they gathered, things started to look up.

Two years before the fall of aegis, things changed for the worst. My father had let me leave the mines early and head back home, to tell Rusty and Torbek that father was going to be late, that he was to meet someone in a nearby city. It was not until well after midnight, when our father returned. Instead of Gofeki being greeted by his children, he was greeted by a whitewash orc, and several dwarfs. A heated argument insued, which awoke Lokri, who in turn woke the rest of us. The four of us snuck through the pitch black living room to the window, just as one of the dwarves, who appeared to be the leader, backhanded our father. Gofeki swung his pickaxe, which he had been holding tightly in his hand, at the dwarf, sinking the pick deep into his skull. That’s when the rest of the dwarves, and the orc, jumped in. The orc easily subdued our father in the dim twilight, giving the dwarves the opportunity to beat our father to the brink of death. At this point, Rusty and Torbek exchanged few words, and reached for the nearest weapon-like thing they could find; Rusty a vase, and Torbek a knife. I crept to the door, and grabbed our father’s hiking stick, and all four of us burst out of the door. It was a rather quick fight. The Orc, with it’s back to the house, was the first one to go; having received a well-placed knife in the spine. Rusty smashed the vase over one of the dwarves heads, and followed that with a backhand. Lokri and I ambushed another dwarf, me smashing the walking stick over his head, and Lokri pushing him to the ground. By this time, the rest of the dwarves-there was eight in total, with two being subdued- overwhelmed us, but not before receiving several cuts from the knife Torbek had grabbed. The dwarves, being much stronger than the ForkBeard children, easily held them up against the house.

“Now, Ah think ye shuld beh punished, fer killen our orc friend ‘ere, and wounden two o’ ma brutha’s” one of the dwarves said. He spoke gruffly to the dwarf who was not holding us down, and they smirked, pulling out long, curved knifes. We tried to break free of the dwarves grasps, Rusty even going as far as biting one of them, but they were much older, and much stronger. As the blade quickly ran across my eye, I was met was excruciating pain, for several long moment, before I was overwhelmed by darkness.

When I had awoken, the bandits were gone, and my brothers lay to my side. I struggled to sit up, and was confused by why I was only seeing things through one eye. I brought my hand up to my left eye, and when I brought it into the dim light that still emitted from our house, I saw that it was coated with blood. I stood there, stock still, in shock. I must have been there for a while, because eventually I heard Rusty’s groans as he awoke. He crawled over to me, and wiped the blood from my cheek, and covered my eye with a torn piece of clothing. I looked up at him, and saw that he had a similar scar over his left eye. I tore off a piece of my shirt, and tied it over his eye. We did the same with Lokri, who, being the youngest was in too much shock to speak. When Rusty and I rolled Torbek over, I watched Rusty’s face grow pale. I can only imagine what mine looked like. Unlike mine and Rusty’s wounds, which had be simple slices along the eyeball, Torbek had had the knife stabbed into his eye, leaving a scarred, bloody mess where his eye used to be. As he groggily awoke, I tied another piece of torn fabric over his eye, which quickly became red. That was when Lokri drew our attention to our father. We stumbled over to where he lay, motionless. Rusty pressed his ear to our father’s chest, straining to hear a heartbeat. When he raised his head again, his eyes were shining with fresh tears. He shook his head. We all put our arms around each other, in a group hug over our father. That’s when we decided we wouldn’t let our father’s death define us. Several months after our father’s death, our routine didn’t change very much. I was still working in the mine, Torbek in the smith, and Lokri in the Lumberyard and Rusty at the Farms.

It was a year later when the undead rose up. Havoc and death swept the land, and the undead were everywhere, slaughtering the innocent. The first couple of weeks were quiet, only the occasional zombie finding our home, which was in a dense forest. But as the cities started to fall, more and more undead turned up, and we were forced to flee our home, with only what we could carry- some picks, axes and swords, and food- and flee with the rest of the dwarven race. We hated the ship we were travelling on. It was crowded, which was to be expected, but there was also a lack of food, and privacy. There was always a dwarf with sicknesses of some sort, whether the disease is the common cold, or the flu, which, on a crowded vessel, was deadly.

We were relieved when we saw the new land, Asulon. The entire ship was relieved. Us dwarves don’t make good sailors. We met Gharth a month or two after the final ships from Aegis arrived. Lokri found him wandering through the forest, hungry and cold. So, he brought Gharth to our temporary home, which was a small wooden shack at the edges of a forest. He told us about how he had fled Aegis with his mother, and died from the flu halfway through the journey. Feeling sorry for him, and remembering how we felt about our father’s death, we took him in, thinking we’d only help him until he got back to his feet. But as time passed, we started to think of him as a brother.

For years we lived in the wooden shack, as cities and towns started to pop up. We continued to hone our skills, and sell our materials, which were in great demand. When we had enough money, we grabbed our belongings, minas, and head out in search of the dwarven cities. When we came upon Kal’Anart, we immediately knew this was the place we wanted to live. Normally when a dwarf buys a house in a city, it’s no big deal. But when five dwarves buy a house, people start to notice. One of those people was Mountain Lord Brazian Grandaxe. It seemed he took an interest in us from the beginning, and after a few months, asked us if we would like to become a clan, sworn to the Grandaxes. We accepted, swore the oath, and were given a large clan house in Kal’Anart.

With the construction of our new home complete, we are ready to help Kal’Anart and it’s residents in any way we can.

*Arlond yawns, setting the quill off to the side, and sliding the book towards the center of the table. Each brother, including Gharth, take turns reading the book, and each nod their approval.

“Gud job, brotha.”

“Aye, well written.”

Arlond nods, and stands up from his chair.

“Ah need some ale, ah be exhausted.”

After a couple of minutes, Lokri comes back into the room, five mugs of ale in his hands. He places them on the table, and each dwarf grabs one. Gharth raises his mug in the air, and says;

“Long live da ForkBeards!”

The group of dwarves raise there mugs in return, and respond.

“Aye, long live da ForkBeards!”

This is an activity check for this clan. If there are any active members, now is the time to speak up. If not, I will ask to have this thread archived in the great library. This is to allow easier accessibility for the new dwarves looking to join an active clan. The link to the archived thread link will be kept in a new "Dead/Inactive Clans" section on the main thread for lore purposes.
