History

Elwen was alone for most of her life. Elven children are not common so she never really had anyone to play with during most of her early life. Her mother and father were the stereotypical high elves, thinking that they’re superior to all other races. her father was a farmer at the Haelun’or farms. He was usually working there and earning food for the family. Her mother was an artist and a writer. She loved the arts and was happy to help Elwen with learning them as well. Being lonely, these became Elwens only past-times. Elwen loved to write and draw. With writing she could easily express her thoughts on paper and with drawing she could give them shape.

For the rest of Elwens early life, not much had changed. She got better at writing and drawing and could more accurately depict her thoughts on paper. This was fun to an extent but she lacked friends and felt lonely. Elwen then turned to books, reading all kinds of things from guides to journals and even stories. It filled the void of loneliness she felt and provided a form of entertainment. Many of the stories told of far off lands. Some told of a land called Aegis which fell some time ago to creatures that shouldn’t have been alive and that’s why everyone is here now. There were a couple of stories that interested her but there was one that was nearby. It was said to be a grand tree and the capital of Malinor; Normandor.

Elwen begged her parents to take her to Normandor. They were stubborn at first but soon her pleas began to wear them down and they told her to get ready to go. She was eager to go so she went to get a few things she’d need such as snacks and a few treats. Elwen was ready to go and so they set off on what was supposed to be a small journey. The normal road between Haelun’or and Normandor was closed that day. A huge tree fell on the path and there was a team working to clear it but it would be quite a while. Elwens parents said to go back but she begged them to still take her to Normandor and they agreed, not wanting to displease their little girl.

Determined, they took a shortcut through the forest of Elandriel. They had never really went through there but Elwens parents had a decent sense of direction. They were walking for quite some time and her parents tried to hide it from her but she knew they were lost because her parents were whispering angrily at each other. Elwen was a little frightened as the sun was starting to go down. Her parents decided to turn around and head back. Turning around, Elwen was eager to get home so she was up front. She didn’t notice her parents were gone until she heard her mother scream.

Frightened that she was seperated, she ran through the bushes towards the scream and when she finally reached her, two Mori’Quessir had daggers to her parents’ necks. Her mother yelled for her to run but she didn’t listen... Elwen panicked and called out for help, her voice echoing through the trees. The Mori reacted quickly and slit her mothers throat and ran at Elwen as fast as she could. She slammed into Elwen and knocked her against the large tree behind her. She blacked out and never saw her parents again...

When Elwen awoke she felt light-headed... something was wrong, she could feel it. The inside of her mouth stung. She opened her mouth to express her pain with an “Ow.” but all that came out was a spurt of blood. That’s the moment that she realized that she couldn’t feel her tongue. Elwen panicked and got up and started running as fast as she could. She kept running in a single direction until she happened upon a gravel path. It was there that she collapsed, exhausted and blood flowing from her mouth. As she was slipping into unconsciousness, she saw a figure walking towards her... and then she passed out.

When Elwen woke up, she was in the guest rooms of the cloud temple. She felt woozy but the pain in her mouth was gone and it wasn’t bleeding. She tried to call out to see if anyone was there, but all that came out was an “Aahaah?”. Her tongue was still gone. She settled down to cry and let her tears flow for quite some time. No one came to check on her, no one came to visit... her life had been turned upside down and she was now completely alone for the first time.

After a good cry, Elwen decided to go outside. She wandered outside for a while, staying within the valley. A man walked up to her, he was another high elf, named Kalenz Uradir. He asked her if she was a high elf as well. She tried to speak but she couldn’t... instead she took a limestone from the ground and wrote on the stone walkways that she was indeed a high elf. The man told her of her home, the Silver City. From his description, not much had changed in her short time away but he offered to take her back home. She accepted his offer and he told her to follow him.

Upon arriving at Haelun’or, he was bothered by the fact that Elwen could not speak. He asked her why that was and she made writing motions to indicate that she needed to write to tell. They went to the college and he gave her an inked quill and parchment and she began to write her tale. While Elwen didn’t tell it very good, he got the general idea of what had happened and had an idea. He would call in an old friend to help.

Jon Evaglno arrived without much notice, he wasn’t that important. To Elwen however, he would be her catalyst for wanting to learn magic in the first place. Elwen tried to tell Jon of what happened through writing but couldn’t convey what exactly had happened. He had an idea and used his magic to enter her mind. In her mind, she showed him the memories of the event, making everything clear to him. Jon felt sorry for Elwen. He talked to her for a while longer, getting to know her a little better. He found that she possessed an abnormal intelligence for her age from her reading when she was young. He decided he would take Elwen in as a daughter.

While the other High Elves weren’t thrilled with the idea, Elwen was happy. She had a friend with whom she could communicate with easily. Jon took her home with him to the manor where he served as a butler. After some rest, Jon entered Elwens mind again. They talked and he got to know her better, learning that she loved reading and writing, explaining her intelligence. He asked her if she would like to be able to talk to other people like this and of course, Elwen said yes. He promised that when he was able, he would teach Elwen his magic to help her communicate better with others.

Elwen stayed in the manor with Jon for quite some time. There, he raised her as his own, teaching her to respect other races rather than shun them like the stereotypical High Elf. From this, she grew distant from her kin, becoming an outcast from her own society as Jon was. Jon also taught her to be fluent in the Common language, as before she wrote mostly Elven. A visitor to the manor, Acaele Kervallei, also helped to teach Elwen and Jon sign language to make communication between them easier on both of them.

The manor had a small library as well so Elwen could read quite a bit but she read through the library quickly. Jon saw this and he told her there was another, larger library nearby. She was excited and asked if they could go there. Jon obliged and took her to the Sanctuary Library. She was thrilled to see that they had an entire section on magic. She read through some of them, learning what kinds of magic there were and also of the other books, namely the one on different types of staves, preparing spells and the duty of a mage. Elwen studied these books for a while and afterwards she moved to the poetry section where she read for the rest of the day before Jon told her it was time to head back to the manor.

Elwen often visited the Sanctuary Library after their first trip, reading most of what it had to offer. However, she frequented the Magic section and memorized what information she could, highly intrigued by the subject. She began to take notes on specific things she found interesting. She did read other books though. She enjoyed the old journals and history books, learning quite a bit of the past of Aegis and Asulon.

Later on, Jon got back into contact with the Mages Order, preparing to move to their new tower. Elwen, being interested in magic of course, questioned Jons involvement in such an order and learned that he was a Master there. Elwen expressed interest in joining the order, hoping to learn magic. Jon was hesitant, making sure that it was the life she wanted and she was persistent in her decision. Elwen got everything ready as they were to move soon.

The move went smoothly as Jon and Elwen didn’t have much, just some basic necessities. They settled in quite nicely as it wasn’t too big of a change. Elwen wandered around for a while, getting used to her new home as Jon went to work for the Mages Order. After Elwen was settled, Jon proposed that she be judged by the Archmages. The Archmages were a little reluctant though.

While Elwen was wandering around the tower, bored, Salamandra came up to her offering her something to do. He told her that he had made hidden secrets in the Tower and gave her the challenge to find as many as she could. To her credit, she found quite a few. Afterwards, Salamandra took her to the Archmages Quarters and showed her their personal libraries. One book that particularly interested her was Salamandras book on “Aura” or rather, Mana, explaining that it was energy that fueled spells. Reading through the other books, she didn’t really find anything that interested her more than that.

Soon the time came for her to be judged. She came before the Archmages, Laurina and Salamandra. They questioned her reasons and intent on learning magic, to which she replied that she wanted to test herself and further her learning. They asked her if she knew the responsibility of magic, to which she replied she did. Magic is not to be used for personal gain and that it is a great responsibility and not a decision to be taken lightly. After thinking on it for a short while, they passed a verdict. She was an Apprentice.

Her lessons began shortly after, though of Alchemy and not magic. She was slightly disappointed but willing to learn anyway. Jon taught her and another apprentice the very basics of Alchemy. For Elwens first lesson though, she failed. Jon helped her along until they found the problem. Elwen being so eager to learn, she was pouring in her ingredients too fast. Jon helped her tame her eagerness. Luckily it was with Alchemy rather than magic. Jon then began to teach her about the different types of herbs and how they were used.

Elwen still wanted to learn magic and she tried to push the Archmages a bit to agree to teach her magic but they told her that she cannot choose and that a higher power would judge her. Still eager to try, she began to practice with what she has learned about magic already. She’s doing her best to use magic now, trying to do various things, focusing on various materials and general concentration but nothing has yielded yet.

Now Elwen has turned eighteen. It was a bit of a change. She was now of age and Jon gave her a room of her own, an Apprentice room. Jon had been promoted to the position of Archmage so Elwen was now an Archmages daughter. This added on a bit of shame since she couldn’t do any magic which also drove her to try even harder. She spent all of her free time practicing, trying her best to invoke magic. Her efforts would soon bear fruit...

Elwen is in her room, going through all sorts of objects she found either in her possession or picked up on one of her walks. She sifts through most of the objects she’s tried. Coins, rocks, bird bones, paper scraps, shards of glass... all failed. She finally pulls out a small twig and sets it on her table and gives a sigh. She begins to focus on the twig, trying to get it to do something... anything at all. Frustrated, she screams in her mind at the twig “just move!” and gestures at it to move forward and that’s when it happens...

That fraction of a second, that point where you first perform magic... she felt it. In that fraction of a second, the twig twitched and her mana was unleashed. But that was only for a fraction of a second... the next moment, all she feels is pain. Her mind is assaulted by raw, unbridled energy and she reels backwards, suffering from an intense splitting headache. She had alot to learn still, but she finally did it.

(More will be written later.)
