Aytos Society

A society born in blood and war. They strongly believe in honor, tradition, and glory. Their wars are for honor, glory, power, and slaves. Enemies who they conquer usually become slaves.

Social Status

Aytosiates - An elitist status in the system. These barbarians enslave enemies, kill those who dishonor them or their society, and uphold tradition. They have an extremely strong sense of honor, tradition, and glory which is above all else. Aytosiates are deemed important and of high status. Aytosiates are chosen through quality.

Aytoses -  A man in Aytos Society but is not an elitist. They act as the guard force and the brute force in wars. Though who is to say that they have no sense of honor and glory too? Like the Aytosiates, they value their culture and society as "The Ultimate Society" compared to the rest of the world. These are your common, respectable citizens and warriors.

Perioeci - A Helot, a slave, who has risen to this social rank through fighting under the Aytos's command as a slave. They are no longer considered slaves but instead "Lesser Men" compared to the Aytosian people. They are no longer treated as scum to do the Aytos's bidding and can do anything they wish but have no say in anything about the Aytos's wars or society.

Helot - A slave, the lowest of the lowest. They do all of the manual work like farming, blacksmithing, and so on for the Aytos society. If any slave were to disrespect an Aytosiate, he or she would usually die. Unless the Helot were to become a Slave warrior, he or she would be stuck as a Helot until the end of his or her days. They have no power and -must- follow the commands of the Aytos or risk death. Slaves are extremely important to the Aytos society as they do most of the manual work so they must bring in a constant stream of them. These are usually gained through wars and enslaving innocent travelers.

Tradition

When born into the society as an Aytosiate, the young female or male is left on a hillside to survive the night with no mother and father. If it survives, the baby will continue on into the Society. Upon the age of 55, all Aytosiates must retire and from there they may work as blacksmiths or take up a political position.

Aytosiate Male: A male born as an Aytosiate is nursed by his mother and taught how to act and treat older men until the age of 7. When they hit the age of 7, they enter the Agoge system by entering a school with 15 other boys in their group to learn about their society. Honor, duty, and tradition was all included along with reading, writing, and math. Little intense physical exercise is done during this phase as they are still young.

They are, however, taught pain. All the way until they are 14 they learn but also walk on gravel with bear feet. They would also be held down by two older boys to be wiped. All mothers would watch this and if you were to cry or scream, the boys, men, and mothers would laugh. This was a test of strength in Aytos society and the longer you could endure it, the stronger you were considered.

Upon hitting their teens, they would be taken away by seperate trainers. Each trainer would teach the boys how to use their weapons and also how to survive in foreign cities. They would toss the boys out into foreign cities to starve them and force them to steal and if necessary, to kill. If the boy was caught in his act of killing or stealing by the local guard there, the guard would kill the boy or the trainer would if the guard didn't.

When they pass the age of 16, they all come together for those that remain along with older men to fill in the gaps to learn formations and how to fight in units. This continues on until the age of 18. When they hit the age of 18, they are tossed out into the wild to scavenge and survive. If they return alive after several months, they are considered full Aytosiate warriors and can bear their title with pride.

Aytosiate or Aytoses Women: Women being brought up are the same for Aytosiates and Aytoses. Believe it or not though, they are relatively free. When they are born, they immediately are taught manners, how to cook, household chores, and so on. When they are married, they are in charge of the house. However, a woman would often be fought over by men. If a man wants another man's woman, without the woman's consent they would duel and the winner would take her for his own. Thus, the woman would be married to the same man or a new one and do not have say in the matter.

Women often influence their husband's decision greatly. However, even with that they are not allowed to take up any political or warrior position.

Aytoses Male - These men have the same upbringing as an Aytosiate. However, their training is not as brutal as it lacks the parts of being tossed into foreign cities and the wilderness. Their training also lacks much of the killing that is usually involved with the upbringing of an Aytosiate. Thus, while they may learn many of the same things, they aren't as well trained.

Challenge of Honor - When someone from inside the society or outside insults your honor, society, or culture, the insulted has right to attack and/or kill the man/woman.

Culture

Clothing - Men often just wear a red cloak and pants, keeping their abs and chest showing. Woman, on the other hand, wear robes that are usually colored white that drape down to their feet.

Language - When they speak, they are not polite for the most part. They are on many occasions rude, smug about their society, coarse, and blunt. Insults sent back and forth between Aytosians are common and treated as a joke. However, if it is serious, then usually an intense physical fight breaks out. Usually during embassy trips or political talks are there to be seen formal and polite Aytosians.

Weapons - The first weapon they have is a large, 30 pound round shield which is used to bash the enemy or stun. The main weapon during wars is the Dory, a 7 - 9 foot long spear with a butt spike at the opposite end. Two secondary weapon types which are often used for guard duty or buckled on when they take strolls are the xiphos and kopis. An Aytosian can choose one or the other. The xiphos is a 12 - 18 inch long sword while the kopis is a viciously curved hacking weapon.

Aytosians DO NOT use any sort of bow or crossbow, though they may throw their spear as using any bow or crossbow is seen as cowardice. Helots or Perioeci warriors may use them as they are considered "lesser" men.

Religion - Reserved for the honorable. It is usually Aytosiates who worship this while Aytoses simply fight without obeying his will. Aros, the god of blood and war. This religion works by a priest slitting an animal's throat into a basin. The priest then drops several twigs into the basin. If most float, Aros approves of their war. If most sink, Aros disapproves and their war is delayed. If another nation is attacking Aytos when Aros disapproves, they will not be allowed to attack until the signs show otherwise.

Civilized

Aytosiates and Aytoses are forced to retire at the age of 55. When they are retired, they may become blacksmiths, farmers, politicians, and so on. Perioeci are often the many that inhabit their lands other than these older people while the helots live on the outskirts in huts. Perioeci are considered in Oren terms the "peasant" when living in the lands of Aytos.

Government

Kings - There are two kings in the Aytos society. They act as generals and leaders but must answer to the Council of gerousia.

Gerousia - A council of old Aytosians above the age of 55 elected by Aytosians above the age of 18. The Kings were the only ones who were part of the Gerousia council below the age of 55. The Gerousia could veto motions passed by Kings, try murders, had the power to condemn, fine, or banish, and could even charge a King of a crime. They also, with the votes of the average Aytosian, pass new taxes, expansions, and wars.

Sitting in a tavern with Aytosiates around him, he looks up as one begins to whisper in his ear. His eyebrows raise in surprise and slugs the rest of his ale down before heading out to see this newborn baby.

An Aytosiate approaches Lugo with a scroll in his hand of acceptance. Handing it to Lugo, he would then let him read it before accompanying him to their camp. A new slave joins the Aytos Society.

Under the hot, burning sun slaves work away. Sweating, crying, and some even dying. Though under Aytosian rule, they are forced to continue.

Slaves.jpg

Construction on the Aytosian settlement flows smoothly. The slaves can be seen laboring away, being lashed, bleeding in the open fields as Aytosians watch over. Within months, the settlement takes shape and Aytosians have a home to live in. Even with this though, the slaves continue to bleed under harsh conditions. Aytosians feast, while slaves burn. Aytosians care not though as it is only natural for a slave.

Lacedaemon waits outside the home of the laboring mother. Tapping his foot impatiently, a slave scrambles out of the home with a dirty bucket of water. Eventually, one of the nursing slaves inside allows Lacedaemon inside to look at the baby. The room is filled with a scent of herbs while the mother lays there exhaustedly. Reaching down, he takes the baby from the mother's grasp who gasps in fear. The slaves stare at him confused as he takes the baby to the hillside. Very carefully he plants the baby in a secure spot on the hillside before waiting leaving. His cold eyes tell that he cares not for if the baby survives. When it comes morning time, the baby is still alive and Lacedaemon personally takes it back to its mother for care. The boy survived.

In Lacedaemon's tent he holds the baby. The little thing writhing in his hand while he twists and turns it to inspect it. Sighing, he turns his head towards the Aytosiate who entered with it.

Lacedaemon: It survived the night?

Aytosiate: Yes sir.

He snorts, turning his head back to the screaming baby. Growing tired of it though, Lacedaemon gives it back to the Aytosiate and orders him out so he can continue planning.
