I like the badlands hanging over the void, that's so cool.

AND THANK YOU for taking the floating island idea into account, I've been wanting those for like years :P

That seems extraordinarily small, unless you think there is still enough room to build decent sized cities. However, I don't like massive cities where you get lost and most parts go unused so I wouldn't like to see massive plots of land left for capitals.

No. A small map with cities with just enough space for the players to live and later develop is a much better idea than another Asulon rerun. I still do prefer a generated map with the cities and whatnot built into it, but I guess Shift knows best if he's got the experience of three maps to finally lead us out of the dark ages.

Wow. 4.0 is already in development, eh? It feels like we just got into Anthos recently. But maybe that's just me.

If you think back we started developing Anthos after being on Asulon since the new year so it really is following the same schedule.

Ahh. I completely forgot.

I exported the map, brought it up in singleplayer and the travel time from spawn to the human capital (walking) is 3 minutes and 30 seconds. I've sent the map to the GM and Admins to run around in to see what their ideas are on the travel distance.

What do you guys think?

This is a perfect distance. I'm tired of having to sprint-jump for five minutes just to reach Salvus, and larger distances between cities spreads roleplay out too much. It needs to be condensed, even if the distances are no longer that realistic, for it to succeed as a roleplay server. Besides, that opens up opportunities to expand and doesn't squish a ton of abandoned ghost settlements between cities.

Exactly. We've had two maps now that show us large distances do not work. It always annoys me when I hear people asking for EVEN BIGGER distances or similar distances to that of 2.0 or 3.0. It's been tried. Aegis worked best, learn from the mistakes. Compact is good, and this map still has lots of land for people to build on if that's their concern.

I agree with you that it is a good distance, but the rest of this and the reasoning is all wrong.  Condensation DOES squish a ton of ghost settlements between cities, that's why modern Oren is so suburbanized.  Besides, I liked walking around in Asulon--as long as there are clearly marked roads--simply because the scenery was so amazing and nothing was condensed. *shudder*

But I can understand the reasoning behind wanting condensation too--and I still think it's more important to have evenly dispersed places than an Anthos or late-Aegis Oren repeat.  Even so, I don't mind three minutes as a time, as long as there's some sort of system to stop the incessant development of the countryside, especially in Oren.

It was people's desire for land near a road that made Oren so crowded, not that the cities were too close together. As I said, it took a ridiculously long time to sprint to Salvus from Old Abresi. They had room enough, not to mention all the limitless countryside. Go off the road in Oren and it is wilderness for quite a ways. Things got even worse with the lack-of-perms experiment.

Asulon was pretty and big, but in my time there I met four people. Everybody else was halfway across the world. That was the antithesis of condensation and because of that I never found roleplay. I joined the server because I wanted to roleplay with people; beautiful scenery is a plus and adds to immersion, but that isn't the point of the server.

Let's see, if I'm remembering right, getting from the capital to Solace was a really long walk-But I may be getting it confused with something else.  Anyhow, the point about cities is that when they are too close together, all those folks who want their manors by the road get smashed together even more.  I don't mind settlements on the edges of roads, so long as it's enough removed from all the other settlements of that sort.

I presume you've been in that valley near Baile I believe, on the road to Abresi?  The quantity of settlements there, all in a pair of small valleys, which bear no architectural relation to each other, was maddening.  Granted some of them were ok, especially once you got inside the things, but from the road it just looked awful!

Also I implore people to keep a medieval theme when building, and not use hedges as walls
