  3. Oh, how cute! I love her design! Is she giving me a love letter? 😳
  4. I'm so sorry that this situation's negatively impacted you and I hope it hasn't spoiled your experience entirely. I really enjoyed our RP as Margaux and Yuliya the other night - and I was looking forward to engaging with you more. I hope you enjoy your break and come back with enthusiasm restored.
  5. Yuliya Styrne sighs as she is, once again, not mentioned in the bulletin. "I'd pay the woman - whoever she is - to make up some interesting rumors about me," she grumbles. "Am I not a fascinating character? Would a scandal about the famous playwright not move a few papers? Bah."
  6. might unshelve my half-orc soon. anyone got suggestions for where she should live? krugmar's off the table, she's a whitewash

If not Oren or Haense, Talon's Port could be cool. They seem like the sort who'd enjoy Sarah.

  7. BADMINTON The Sport of Gentlemen A Rules Handbook by Yuliya Styrne Two Ladies with Badminton Racquets 1807 INTRODUCTION It is a fact acknowledged by most physicians that the body requires rigorous exercise to promote good health. How unfortunate it is, then, that so many opt to forego the upkeep of their bodies. Perhaps they find sport uncomfortable or ungainly or otherwise inaccessible. Perhaps, like me, they are physically disabled or elderly and cannot take exercise as others do. The solution to their woes and mine, however, has at last arrived in the elegant and simple sport known as badminton. Badminton is a sport that can be enjoyed by men, women, the young, and the old alike. Badminton is a sport played using racquets to hit a 'birdie' (a ball with a cone of feathers attached to the back) over a net. It's played on a court bisected into four quadrants and divided in half by the net. The most common form of badminton is played with two players. However, four or even six player variants are not unheard of. The goal of badminton is to never allow the birdie to touch the ground. If the birdie touches the ground on your side of the court, your opponent receives a point. Games are played until one player wins a total of 11 points. Shorter games may be played with a total of 5 points - or longer games may be played to 21 points. For the disabled and elderly, a seated variant may be played on a half-court. A young girl and a young gentleman exchanging a birdie 1805 RULES Badminton operates on a few simple rules. At the start of the game, a simple coin toss may be used to determine who serves. The server must successfully hit the birdie over the net. The server has two chances to fail before they fault and cede a point to their opponent. A fault occurs when the server fails to strike the birdie, the birdie hits the net, or the birdie touches the ground on their side of the court. Serves must be made with the opponents standing on opposite sides of the net in diagonal squares. Every time the ball is served, it initiates a volley. In order to conclude the volley, a point must scored by either the server or their opponent. Once the birdie is successfully served, the opponent may strike it with their racquet to return it over the net. If they miss the birdie and it lands on their side of the court (or if they hit it and it strikes the net and/or the ground on their side of the court), the server wins a point. Out-of-bounds hits are considered a fault. When the birdie flies out-of-bounds, the person who last struck it is considered at fault and their opponent gains a point at their expense. Players are not allowed to cross the court lines and travel out-of-bounds during the volley either. Players must never touch the net with either their bodies or their racquets during the volley. This counts as a fault if it occurs and their opponent will win a point. Once the point is won, the two opponents will switch squares (remaining diagonal) and the individual who lost the volley will be called upon to serve next. Players are not allowed to hit the birdie until it has passed fully over the net. They are not allowed to reach across the net into their opponent's court. 10. I'm still going to stand by the idea that - if a character dies and they're not permadead - their bodies should go "POOF" and turn into smoke/sparkles/etc.

I think that would smooth over a lot of the weirdness associated with non-enforced PK in terms of storytelling and narrative coherence. The life-or-death tension in lethal situations would still be present, based on the fact that your character ICly doesn't know whether or not they're going to "poof" or die for real. Old-age deaths, sickness, and suicides are always real deaths and never "poofs." However, violent deaths have an equal chance to be poof or no-poof.

I don't believe PK should ever be enforced because we should get to decide whether or not our character's life is over. But it's always been one of those things that's awkwardly narratively and ICly. If you watch your friend die and they come back the next day just fine, it's weird. If you watched your friend die, their body went "poof", and they return the next day... less weird cuz you get immediate visual confirmation that they're not permadead.

    1. NotEvilAtAll

      NotEvilAtAll

well it'd be hard to do that since players don't always immediately decide whether or not they PK, and maybe the poofing stuff would sorta weirdly pressure folks to make a decision faster than they otherwise would so that other characters can RP whether or not they poofed.

Could put a one Saint's Day waiting period on it

Then we could have morgues in the cities! Where we store bodies while waiting to see whether or not they poofed. If the 24-hour timer runs out, they auto-poof.

  11. Yuliya Styrne - better known under her pen name Bianca La Fleur - receives a copy of the paper at the Karosgrad inn where she's staying while she and her troupe rehearse. She unfolds it and scans the contents - her lips curling into a smile as she spies the title of her show. "My, how generous of them to give me some free press!" she says aloud to herself before taking a sip of her coffee. "Let's hope this gets a few more curious onlookers through the door."

  13. “Your sovereign Emperor, ma'am, is old and weary," the old man, known to the masses as Joseph II, said as he gazed toward the stage, "That journey into the millennium which awaits us is near - it is fresh at scent.” “It troubles me to hear you say that, Majesty," Yuliya replied. She studied the monarch from behind. He stood with his back to her, his arms folded with the fingers of one hand encircling the wrist of the other. Froths of lace at his sleeve concealing his thin, wan, semi-translucent skin. “There are things he has not yet done in this world, that he would like to make done. One of these," he paused and turned to look at her. His grey-green eyes glinted under the gas-lights, "is to write a drama." At that, his face split into a smile. "Who better to instruct us in the art but Dame Yuliya Styrne, bearer of the great laurel?” “Oh! You…” she began haltingly, “…want to be my student?” “If it please the Dame,” he bobbed his head in confirmation. The gold of his monocle chain caught the light, casting tiny fragments of luminance over his face. “History, politics, philosophy - we have written it all. But not drama. Drama is, chief among those genres of literature, a hill we have ne'er conquered.” “Ahaha,” she lets out a breathless little laugh. “You'll have to pardon me. This has all caught me by surprise." When she managed to corral her laughter, she gave the monarch a gentle smile - a smile that might have been pretty, if it had been displayed on any other girl's features. "I should love to have you as my student, Your Majesty.” She had entertained pupils before, of course. Young men and women who felt themselves called toward the stage. Yet the prospective student who stood before her was an entirely different beast. How would one teach iambic pentameter, verse, and story structure to an Emperor? How would one balance helpful critique with the deference necessary when talking to a monarch? Yuliya Styrne was about to find out. OOC: ADDED LORIN + SIEGMUND
