ON DETERMINATION (OR, AN ESSAY ON THE NATURAL HUMAN TREND TOWARDS A LIFE OF DETERMINATION, THE AGONY OF THE DISCOURAGED MIND, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSISTENCE) BY EIRIK BARUCH, DUKE OF VALWYCK “With their hearts and souls held in their hands, Aodh’s tribe marched across the swamplands, across the rivers, and across the lakes. There is a fundamental difference that shines when comparing Man to that of the other descendant races, and that is the Determination of Man. What do I mean by determination? I mean our will to see through the fulfillment of our ambitions without letting anything stand in the way of it. This is a trait that I find uniquely tied to the Man, for I believe that it is derived from our curse. Our determination, of course, is rooted in the fickleness of our very lives, we have the shortest lifespan of all races, and so it is only fitting that we have the strongest determination and will of all. We do not have the time that the orcs, dwarves, and elves do, we do not have as much time to see through our projects to fruition. We are inherently pushed to action by the lack of time that we have in the world. A Man who spends a hundred years on this earth doing nothing is hardly remembered, but a Man who spends twenty years to build the pillars of a prosperous Kingdom for their future generations, they will become legendary to their people. But our determination is more than just being the most industrious of races. It is not just a story of great Men who build Kingdoms and Empires from the ground to see if they can last the test of time. It is not just Kings and Emperors that have used their determination, but all manner of Men that have so. Terrence May was determined to see the world a better place, and used a fruitful career within politics to make it so. Dietrich van Jungingen saw a certain beauty in the world, one that he wrote down for all the world to see. The list of great Men who will be remembered in history to a lesser extent than Kings and Emperors is a remarkable and long list. Yet, to that list, there is something great to them. There are achievements tied in with their determination. But what of determination of the heart, what about those who have great determination within themselves, but have little to show for it? Those not remembered in history? What makes the young Lord who does not desire to rule, but uses his determination to become a great ruler, different from the son of a farmer, who used his determination to follow his dream of becoming a travelling pianist? It is not the strength of their determination, for for a peasant farmer to go and become a pianist does perhaps require more determination than for a young Lord who does not desire to rule to rule well. No, it is simply the scope of history, perhaps that undermines our determination? I know not. I’ve often thought that because history does not show these other stories of determination, that it perhaps discourages those from following their hearts and using their determination. I have witnessed it once, with my very own eyes, and I consider it to be quite tragic. Whatever the answer be to that question, the determination of the discouraged is still strong. I believe that it aches within their hearts. The discouraged Man feels great pain from their discouragement, for they have all this determination burning within themselves, their natural determination wishes to come out. Often the determined heart will defeat the discouraged mind, but sometimes the determined heart will fall victim to the discouraged mind. It has been seventy years since we lost Sigismund II, our soldier King that stood besides his people and his soldiers during the Scyfling War. His heart, truly, burnt with such grand determination, and even then, he was bested by the discouraged mind, and fell to suicide. We must never surrender ourselves to the discouraged mind. The Haeseni Ethos is persistence, and while it is claimed by the Haeseni, it is shared by all of man. Persistence is key to surviving the discouraged mind, persistence is a trait of our determination. It drives us not only to persist in the body, the adrenaline that keeps us alive at the face of beasts of the wild, but also to persist in the mind, the bright light that seeks to pull us out of the hole of depression. Go with determination, children of Horen. Let your determination carry you throughout life, and whatever ambition that it is you have for yourself, it will come true. Your determination shall teach you how to achieve, it shall teach you how to love, it shall teach you how to truly become the essence of Man. We are Man, we are Determination. A NO LONGER GRAND LADY A depiction of Adalia Ruthern, in what would be one of her final moments The early morning sun rose above Vidaus, and a cold breeze rolled through her open window. She had always thought that allowing in a cold morning breeze helped maintain her wrinkleless face, something or other that her mother had taught her when she was a child. The morning routine was the same as usual, perhaps one of the few times of day where she focused on anything beyond herself. She woke up alone, Harren off tending to the apartment in Oren, and rose from the bed to begin her walk throughout their children’s many rooms in the keep. The first room was, of course, the girl named after herself, Adalia Anastasya. Her likeliness to her mother had always been rather uncanny, a true beautiful daughter of her own, as she would describe it. The girl lay in her bed, sleeping soundly. Adalia, the younger, did not usually wake up until later on in the day, and by then Adalia, the elder, had long since begun on her daily work. It left the two rather little time to spend together. The rooms belonging to Harren, Filip, and Owyn were, as per usual, empty. The three boys spent the majority of their time with their father in Oren, aiding him with his ambassadorial work. Harren shared appearances with his twin, Adalia, taking after their mother. Filip and Owyn, on the other hand, took much more after their father and their Ruthern blood - though with their father’s quirks which made them much more bearable to look at, in her not-so-humble opinion. Though, of all, Filip was the most like their father, interested in politics and different cultures. Despite the fact that she knew they would not be there, she nevertheless opened the door every morning, just to see if one day they may appear, sleeping soundly in their beds. Counting on next was Analiesa, named in her late sister’s honour. Her girls were lucky, to both be as beautiful as their mother. Long blonde hair, coupled with lighter blue eyes. It was a certain beauty that was largely unknown in this Haense, where black hair and darker eyes were the most common. Analiesa however, was not home. She always left rather early in the morning, she probably had a boyfriend somewhere that she went off to see. Adalia could only hope that her daughter would marry that boyfriend soon. Then came the last room - Joren’s room. An odd case, he had been sent off to a foreign boarding school in Kalden many years ago, educated in a great variety of matters. He had developed a tendency for sleeping on his face, inhaling his pillow more so than anything. But this morning, oh this morning, Joren’s face was there for the whole world to see… Her husband had a rather tasteful and handsome beard… But the growth presenting itself upon Joren’s face? That was beyond horrible, the most despicable and wretched thing that she had ever laid her eyes upon. She could feel her heart ache, shatter, ruin, upon the sight that lay before her. Her boy, her baby. Ruined, tainted, ugly. She froze in the doorway, hand clutched to her chest. The pain that the sight brought upon her was immense, nearly indescribable. Her eyes locked in upon the beard, as her breathing first became shallow, before it stopped entirely. That ugly thing in that bed was no son of hers, there was no way that it could be. The woman’s spirit and will withered at once, as she crumbled onto the floor. A few servants quickly noticed her, but they arrived all too late, or perhaps there was no saving her at all? Whatever it was that had killed Adalia, be it a heart attack or a pure broken heart, there was no denying that the sight of Joren’s beard had killed, and that the Grand Lady was truly dead. It was a rare thing, for Adalia to think of anyone but herself. For years, the crazed woman found herself obsessing over the most miniscule details - herself serving as a black hole, pulling any importance inwards. It had otherwise been a normal day, she woke to Harren, ate - in private, lest a visitor arrive and discover she too fell privy to primal needs, then made her way to Karosgrad. After barking, as one does, at an otherwise unfortunate courtier to sort through her papers, the Grand Lady was delivered the missive - a statement from Valwyck. It was not a normal day. It had been some time since Ruslan’s name had moved through the woman’s head. She was aware of his quickly worsening disposition, but she could not bring herself to care. Why should she, afterall - it did not affect her. She did not mourn him, she could not - she did not even like the man. He always looked at her.. strange, his comments never about her, but instead about who he wished she was. But still, the de Astrea cried. Not a theatrical cry, as those closest to her were so accustomed to, but a genuine one. Ruslan was her last connection, her last feeble grip on what had been lost. Amicia, Rosalind, and Analiesa had been gone for years. It was true, Adalia reminded Ruslan of her sister long gone, but the mirror worked two ways. And so, the woman wept. Anastasya found herself wrapped in silence as the news was delivered to the Royal family. She did not cry, not about this. All she knew Ruslan for was his coldness, his inability to show his son the affection that he so desired. But still, after cladding herself in black, the princess moved off to find him.

The 395 Scavenger Hunt of Hoonseti-Rooska To the Citizens and Allies of Hoonseti-Rooska, The children of Haense will participate in a scavenger hunt organized by the Commissar of Recreation (COR), of the Mayor’s council, in cooperation with Her Royal Majesty, Anastasya Isabel and Adelina Bishop of The Koenas’ Council. This occasion serves as the first event in a long while, tailored specially to the citizens of the Kingdom of Hoonseti-Ruska. All children of the kingdom are invited, and encouraged to attend, but only those keen thinkers with the sharpest of eyes will succeed and be rewarded for their talents. The following shall outline the proceedings of the hunt: - The COR will open with a speech upon the stage, introducing the event and thanking the mayor for approving it. - Teams of up to 6 are assembled; given shields and hats of differing colors, and a name to identify their teams. - Chests with the color of the teams will be placed in the square beside the stage, when Items are found, they are to be returned to those chests - Adelina of the Queen’s Council, and the C.O.R will give clues to the audience that will hint at the locations of the items, and what they're looking for. - After the clues are given, the teams will be released to search for the items. - After a 45-minute-timer is completed, or after the last item is found and brought to the council stage, a lunch will be hosted in the prikaz dining room. THE HAESENI SEASON Ve Lifstala 3 9 6 E H R S I G M U N D A This missive, distributed across the Kingdom, announces the return of a beloved Haeseni tradition - Ve Lifstala, in all its glory. Otherwise known as the Season, its aim is to bring together the eligible youth of the city in a whirlwind of festivities and pleasure-seeking, as well as providing ample time for those partaking to network and forge new alliances within the Haeseni courts. There, as always, is no minimum age to partake in the festivities - seeing as the Season is not wholly focused on the marriage market. Her Royal Majesty, Koenas Emma has ordered her council to begin work on a Lifstala of unprecedented length, stuffed full of galas, teas, balls, sporting events to show off prowess, and of course- plenty of time for friendships to form among courtiers and the like. Invitations shall be distributed among all citizens of the Dual-Monarchy of Hanseti and Ruska - commoners and nobility alike... A painting, depicting the last of the Haeseni Lifstala celebrations, circ. 361 E.S. What follows is the itinerary for our third Lifstala of Haense. PRE-SEASON PREPARATION Those hoping to participate in Ve Lifstala will be happy to hear of the etiquette lessons which will be open for anyone in the Kingdom to attend. This lesson will be put on by members of the Queens Council where a wide variety of topics will be discussed such as Ballroom and Dance Etiquette, Dining Etiquette, Greetings and Introductory Statements, etc. This lesson is highly recommended for those lacking in etiquette skills and knowledge and will be considered one of the first events of the season. (OOC: Tuesday, 19th October, 4pm EST) THE PRESENTATION The Lifstala will observe tradition, and officially commence with the presentation of those participating during court, as well as whomever accompanies them before the throne. The name of each youth, and their party will be called out - the debutante shall then be presented to the Royals, in an opportunity to display sought-after attributes and mannerisms before the Court, answering whatever questions are asked of them. It is asked that all debuting females don a shade of red, a vibrant colour symbolic in Ruskan fashion of their readiness and openness to potential courtship. For the less fashion-able men, a red touch will do. The ladies, however, are expected to embody the colour almost completely. The Koenas reserves the right to draw her favour onto a participant for the season. This is deemed to be high praise indeed. Onlooking single men and women, as well as different participants, may keep an eye on a lord or lady who could suit their fancy. All eyes will be on those lining up before the throne! Including the keen analysis from Matriarchs and Patriarchs, looking to seek alliances with other powerful families. (OOC: Wednesday, 20th October, 5pm EST) ST JULIA’S COMPANIONS An initial chance for all the participants to have some time getting to know one another in a more personal manner. In the palace gardens all those partaking in the Season will congregate at picnic blankets. It is encouraged that the youths speak privately or in small groups of threes, with the aim to chat and get to know one another on a more personal basis. Be sure to keep rotating to exchange words with everyone present. Pairs will be encouraged to go on short walks around the gardens, arm in arm, or to remain seated under the shade of the pavilion. Guardians, do not fear, for there will be chaperones to guide the event. This event is a chance to better know the other where it is acknowledged that most at the event are looking for potential matches to court. It is crucial, being at the beginning of the Season, to converse with as many as possible to broaden your choices for a most wonderfully suited match. There will be craft opportunities here, to fashion wreaths and corsages in the spirit of gifting them to others. (OOC: Thursday, 21st October, 4pm EST) A YOUNG LADY’S HAUCHMETVAS To celebrate the coming-of-age of one of many of the eligible ladies in Haeseni society, a hauchmetvas (or debutante in Common) will be held in the Keep of Otistadt in Lady Marie Ludovar’s honour. It will be a fruitful evening consisting of dancing, drinking, feasting, and gift-giving if any attendees wish! All are cordially invited to attend, even if not eligible for courtship. (OOC: Friday, 22nd October, 3.30pm EST) LOVER’S MASQUERADE BALL Debutantes and their prospective suitors will be dressing up in their finest regalia, adorned with face obscuring masks to attend a most prestigious ball. Each single man and woman of the season will be allowed to peruse the ballroom, picking anonymous partners in order to have equal spread of socialising between bachelors and bachelorettes. This is the perfect opportunity to spread your family’s wealth, with the most expensive masks and gowns that can be procured. It shall prove to be a night of intrigue as a large game will be played among the guests. Each man will be given a small pearl, strung on a coloured ribbon - to slip on their wrist. The ladies will be given the same, so that their colour matches a small pool of the mens’ bracelets. Given time to hide through the palace, the young couples will be released - to locate their coloured counterpart and return together! (OOC: Saturday, 23rd October, 4pm EST) A ROYAL WEDDING A model of the aims of our Haeseni Season, His Royal Highness Prinzen Andrik will be wed under the eye of Godani with the Lady Nikoleta of Ghaestenwald. The union will be incorporated into Lifstala’s celebrations, as it symbolises a success story of such capable maneuvering on part of the two families. This Royal Wedding will not hold back any splendour, and guests will be invited back to the Nikirala Prikaz to feast, drink, and have the opportunity to personally congratulate the young newlyweds. (OOC: Sunday, 24th October, 4pm EST) A NIGHT OF PORTRAITS Paint Night, a popular event hosted by the Queen’s Council, will be held during the season to bring a more casual and intimate atmosphere for participants. Each participant will be paired up and portraits will be drawn of one another while also being allowed to converse and get to know each other. Depending on the time and the number of participants, several rounds of Paint Night will be held in order to encourage mingling between more than just one pairing. (OOC: Monday, 25th October, 5pm EST) A TOURNEY Although not solely for men, it is encouraged that those who feel able to participate in this sporting event. This year, Karosgrad will hold a weaponless melee in its grand Hippodrome stadium - whereby the victor will have proven their strength and prowess to the crowd. Anyone can sign up for this event, it isn't exclusive to the Season! There will be a monetary prize of 100 mina. (OOC: Tuesday, 26th October, 4pm EST) MEN’S SOCIETY The eligible men of Haeseni society are encouraged to gather in the Nikirala Prikaz’s library to drink, socialize, and engage in a few friendly games of chess and cards as they please. This event will allow the men of the Season to properly socialize away from the eyes of their suitors so that they may form amiable companionships to last throughout the Season and beyond! (OOC: Wednesday, 27th October, 4pm EST) A LUNCHEON AT VALWYCK In hopes that young couples may continue to get to know each other, a luncheon shall be held in the main hall at Lichtestadt where couples may partake in a variety of activities, such as Haeseni Chess in the gardens and wine tasting. Finger sandwiches and sweet meats shall be provided, and once all are fed, the party shall move onto the expansive grounds of Valwyck so that couples might enjoy the fresh air. (OOC: Thursday, 28th October, 4:30pm EST) THE CONCLUDING FESTIVAL OF THE SEASONS The highlight of the Season and the event marking the end of Lifstala will be held in the Nikirala Palace. Invitations to the ball are extended to everyone to partake in a night of festivities with sweeping music to dance to, plentiful food and drink as well as conversation and chatter that will secure the night in memories forever. Men and women must don their most formal wear and attend the ending bash to a triumphant Season. The Koenas and her Council will arrange for the Palace to be decorated in a manner to exhibit various Seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. Entertainment will be provided for onlookers to marvel at on the main stage in the ballroom, including the famed Patrick the Wizard, and other magic displays. (OOC: Friday, 29th October, 5pm EST) FURTHER ACTIVITIES Activities like Haeseni Chess are encouraged although not scheduled. It is a healthy way of competing with fellow participants and members of the court while showing intellect and skill. As mentioned before, activities between couples such as riding, promenading and picnicking are all dobry. If an esteemed family should like to host their own luncheon, ball or hunt during the weeks of the Season it is very much encouraged. Private affairs, of course, are deeply approved by the Koenas and her Council. POST-SEASON CALLING As the Season continues on, or after the final celebration, gentlemen may decide to call on the house of their favoured debutantes, and arrange for a courtship to begin, or propose marriage to her Patriarch. It is recommended to be swift in asking, as to allow the lady more time to think, and to get the leg up on any rival potential suitors. The Royal twins: HRH Princess Anastasya Isabel, Duchess of Karlsburg and HRH Prince Andrik Nikolas, Duke of Akovia, along with their cousin, Lady Nikoleta Barbara of Ghaestenwald have all reached their fourteenth birthday - and with it comes a large celebration of life and adulthood. (Even though the trio are now fifteen, because someone’s brother decided that he wanted to get crowned on their fourteenth birthday. It’s not like you only turn fourteen once or anything. Sigismund if you’re reading this we expect great gifts.) The Double Debutante Beautillion Ball will start within ve Nikirala Prikaz in Karosgrad - a schedule of the processions can be found below. The trio look forward to finally being able to celebrate their coming-of-age, and welcome all guests who have gifts. TIMELINE: Princess Anastasya and Prince Andrik’s Ice Skating Routine The debut will commence with revisiting the twins fifth birthday as all can observe the expertly trained pair participate in a series of jumps, spins, hoists, and spirals. Wreath Bestowment Continuing a tradition, the young ladies Princess Anastasya and Lady Nikoleta shall each be bestowed with a wreath of flowers representing their values, and to celebrate their maturation. Princess Anastasya will receive a wreath of chamomile, columbine, jasmine, and lily to represent her patience, resolution, grace, and beauty. Lady Nikoleta will receive a wreath of edelweiss, heliotrope, iris, and oakflower to represent her courage, devotion, faith, and strength. Speech by Koenas-Mamej Annika Anastasija After the wreath bestowment, the Koenas-Mamej will acknowledge the crowd and give her best wishes to the trio. Then, bestowing a special gift to each of them. The First Sip of Alcohol A new tradition, the new adults shall have the chance to try their first sip of alcohol. Beverages will be passed out to everyone and a toast will be made by Lady Nikoleta to honor their newly found maturity. Brother Sister Dance Following the wreath bestowment and toasts, the trio shall share dances with their respected siblings. The Hippodrome shall quickly be transformed from a bloody, violent mess, to a vibrant carnival ground! Pin the Tail on the Llama Whilst the elephant rides are occurring, a llama shall be escorted in by the Debut Jester. Guests will have a chance to pin a tail on the live llama. Guests who are able to make their placement without being bucked away or spat on shall receive a special prize of the Debutante’s choosing. Tight-Rope Walkers After the entertainment provided by the live-animals subsides, highly-trained tight-rope walkers will perform in the hippodrome. The grounds below the walkers will be alight with fire to add a certain level of suspense to the show. Grand Feast Guests will be escorted back to ve Nikirala Prikaz, where a grand feast shall occur! The meat of the slain polar bear shall be served to those gathered, along with the favourite foods of each of the Debutantes. Goodie Bags Following the conclusion of the feast, baby lambs shall be escorted into the feast hall.
