Seeking Gorundyr
I address all Gorundyr, their friends family or associates and people seeking to live our culture. Since recent time our numbers have dwindled to the hundreds, our culture brought to it’s knees by time and separation. Distant clans are brought down by in fighting and other outside forces. I’ve received Kiir from other clans many times over the year, their families disarrayed and destroyed. We’re truly in a the twilight of our religion and it’s time we join together. Clan Orvar has secured a district governed by our people under the Qualasheen. A place where we may freely hold our festivals, build our altars, hold our divinations, and live peacefully. I urge all who worship Jolf’marr or wish to worship to travel to the Harian Gorundyr District and speak with the Ziem and Chieftain Aine of Orvar.
-Chieftain-Ziem Aine of Orvar.
OOC Real talk:
Right so with the actual content of the poster out of the way I can get into the nitty gritty. I’m attempting to bring activity back to the Gorundyr. What are the Gorundyr? TLDR they’re vikings, love it? Great.
The long explanation:
The Gorundyr are a culture of Celtic and Norse based people. They’re beliefs and life is strongly rooted in their gods and culture and are expected to act at least somewhat within that culture. An example of this are the sacrifices done frequently by individual Gorundyr. They are expected offer up things to certain gods to gain their favor. Say someone fishes often, they would give up their largest catch each day to the altar of the god Draug the ocean deity. There’s three major paths in the Gorundyr culture that most people tend to fall into. The Priesthood, Warriors, or Craftsmen. Warriors and Craftsmen are the most common and are often both done together, however those who don’t set themselves upon a path of warrior or priesthood aren’t seen as lesser. While the military is traditionally dominated by males, Shield maidens are very much accepted and are seen as equals.
Creation:
Still interested? Neat. There’s a certain learning curve to playing a Gorundyr so to help smooth over the transition normally you should contact me on skype(ninja4fun) my name should appear as Sir Muttington at the moment. Now, there’s three basic ways of making a Gorundyr. There’s creation of a child from another clan that was brought to an end. This option is generally the easiest way to get used to the culture as the general separation of the clans can lead to divergence in how the culture is taught. This means you can start knowing all the gods, the language, the religion and all that sort of stuff or you can start with a lesser knowledge of the full thing and I can correct this through roleplay over a longer period. If you’re a quick learner and want to begin a fully fledged Gorundyr that’s also an option, you can even create a full clan and bring that to the district if you have the people. The last major option is using a current character, the problem with this option comes with the fact that they are in fact.. grown. Not only is it rather awkward to come up with a proper rp reason to just switch to a lesser known religion there’s also the fact that they’d be expected to switch fully no matter their previous beliefs. If the character decides they don’t like a certain aspect of the culture or religion they’ll essentially be told to just **** off and training and kinship with the rest of the people would be cut.
(Again, it’d be better if you are going through this process with me, if you haven’t yet please add me on skype at ninja4fun and i’ll go through it with you and answer any questions.)
Right so once you’ve decided which way you want to bring the character to the culture you need to decide on a patron god. A patron god is basically the god you identify most with and spend most of your time. For instance a blacksmith would most likely have the patron god Oknar. You can find the gods here(For credit see the bottom of the page.) along with the whole bulk of culture lore, you’re gonna wanna bookmark this page. If your character is a grown Gorundyr they are expected to have a patron god. Characters changing religions can choose one once they learn about it icly and children can choose to learn it icly or have one when they arrive. Most Gorundyr are trained from a young age to use a certain weapon. The most common weapons are |Askr(Spear): Hewing, Winged, and Barbed throwing spear
|Brandr(Sword)| Double edged swords with less pronounced cross guards. Ex: Longswords, Claymores.
|Skjoldr(Shield)| Round shield, always taught to be wielded with the Brandr.
|Dreithr(Axe)| Dane, and Bearded
|Almr(Bow)| Used for battle and hunting, they are strung with quite a bit of draw force.
The Gorundyr also speak their own language, Jolfmarr’tal. Grown Gorundyr should know every word, children can vary in how much they know even within the clans they come from, and people switching religions won’t know anything for the most part.
Skinning and Appearance:
Pretty much what you think a viking looks like is what you a Gorundyr like. They drape themselves in furs and simple clothes, paint their armor and shields with Gorundyr designs like woad and similar things. While I can skin my ideas for clothes is for the most stressed to the end. The creator of the lore also has a database of proper examples to look at here. When crafting the appearance of your character keep in mind the traits normally in the genepool. Gorundyr are under the highlander subrace and are from mountainous regions so their skin is almost always pale. They generally have brown hair and blue or green eyes. Braids are a very common style added to Gorundyr’s hair.
Naming:
Rather straightforward process, any nordic sounding name you want to use followed by “of [Clan]” for instance “Sven of Hodren”
Rp Values:
Be able to type properly and keep the roleplay tone. If you find yourself to be rather dramatic or easily have your feeling hurt we’re maybe not the best group oocly for you. We enjoy roleplaying out all actions, so if you’ve learned a trade icly you need to be able to roleplay that trade properly. Roleplay sparring and fighting is a large part of the culture so do not expect to be kept away from it. If you have a certain problem with someone oocly you are expected to be mature and either avoid that person rply or play nicely.
For the most part everything else can be cleared up when it comes to it such as what path they want to go on.
Also fun fact: There’s a lore reason built into Gorundyr for killing edgy crow messenger birds. They’re seen as omens or bad luck, like black cats.
