I would recommend Breaking Bad it is really easy to get into and amazing. John Adams is a short HBO mini series of an American Founding Father who is just bitter about everything (very sad), Boardwalk Empire is good very dialogue heavy and slow at first also is HBO, Lost is a good show but it is hit or miss if you like it you'll love it, if you don't like it you'll hate it.
