Before I share my opinion with everyone, I would like to point out a few things. First and foremost, I read the entirety if this forum post, from page one to page eleven. Now with that being said, a lot of what I have to say more than likely has already been said, but that doesn't mean I want to remain quiet on this topic, since magic roleplay has always interested me.
I hated books when I was younger. I absolutely hated them. I hated books because to me, I could watch television and get the same effect... I was horribly wrong and to this day, consider myself an idiot for thinking that. When I found the subject of high fantasy, I think it was the first time I truly fell in love with anything that didn't come from a fast food restaurant. The two things that have always interested me most about high fantasy, were the aspects of magic and combat. With that being said, I am going to break down my opinion into two different categories, so everyone honestly understands what I'm trying to say. I am going to begin with physical combat (swords, bows, and the like).
My Minecraft name is Drone414 but as you can see, on the forums I go by Azel Bloodseeker. Azel was my first main character on this server, he was the first character I've put over four hundred hours of excessive, detailed, and breathtaking rp into. He's grown from a young fool, to a wise, skilled warrior. I would have to disagree with what many constantly say when it comes to the topic of locking magic. What would that be? Well, it would be what everyone says about picking up a sword and swinging it, that it's easy, when it truthfully isn't. Everyone who argues magic being free will always say that if you can swing a sword, why shouldn't you be able to do magic? I agree with that. If you can claim to be a master swordsman or archer after being a part of the server for twenty minutes, why shouldn't you be able to do the same with magic? Because it's stupid, but there truthfully is no way to monitor it. If you've ever roleplayed with me as Azel when I am actually in combat, you would see how hard I work to make it a fun fight for not only myself, but the other person. Azel has been training for centuries, I have been training him for that long, but in fights, I realize it can always go either way, so I do my best to make it fun for the other people being a part of it.
Combat Rp can be as deep as magic Rp. Every weapon is different, there are thousands of styles, and more being made. Hell, I've created three different forms of sword fighting with Azel in Rp, and I've taught it to a select group of people who Azel found worthy to be trained. Does that mean it should be locked? Nope. I am not locking it, if anyone came to me about learning how to sword fight, I'd teach them how to be a badass. Why would I do that? Because without guidance, you get newbies and even players who have been around long enough, powergaming and metagaming. Does that mean physical combat should be locked? Nope. Does that mean a teacher should be necessary? Nope. It's honestly the same thing with magic.
If you have the capability to log on and say "I am a master pyromancer as of this day," and actually Rp it properly, you deserve it, plain and simple. If my best friend applied to this server and wanted to be a master I'd advise them to find a teacher. But if they can roleplay it right, without powergaming and annoying other people, I would see no reason for them to find a teacher. Why take months of time to learn something from others, others who might not even want to help you. As stated before, this can cause segregation or elitism (whatever you prefer, they are both different but both suck). The point of an Rp server is to have fun, to roleplay with others, to create an environment everyone can enjoy, but also to keep it in order and not too crazy. With that being said, though it can be crazy at times due to magic being free to everyone, it's still somewhat in check. Sure here or there people run into the jerk who claims to be a tier 5 pyromancer, who can barely Rp, who can barely even speak English, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to be that way. I've met more people who Rp magic amazingly than I have those who don't.
As stated before, and will be stated again, guidance is keep. Yes Ahri, I get it, you can't always guide everyone in magic. I also get that magic is so in depth, that you might not be able to guide the person the way they need to be done so, but that doesn't mean people can't try. I'm doing my best to make my human character a master mind mage. I just found a teacher, and I'm going to put my whole heart in soul into him learning from a teacher, because I agree with others, the journey is sometimes more valuable than the goal, but that doesn't mean others feel that way. Locking magic is not the answer, leaving it free, all of it, is a good idea. It sucks that the only way to actually maintain stability for the server may be ban reports, but maybe some players need to have a good ban to understand this is a privilege and not a right.
