  2. Coming Home It had been coming for a long time. It had come when the Keepers of Norland had started to spit on the faith and warp it into a cruel monstrosity to fit their own perverted games. It had come when the Kings had begun to spit on tradition. It had come when Vane denied the Rurics the right to moot. It had been enough when Rurics and Norlanders alike started to cower in shadows and hold moots neglecting the invitations of the three great clans of Frey, Eirik, and Edvard. By then, it had clearly been enough, The only way for it to end was now in blood. 4. A Ruriksmoot A depiction of the now king, Vangel Freysson , upon his noble steed entering the great-hall of Norland A missive is spread across the human kingdoms of Almaris, especially strung across the walls of every home and hut in Alisgrad. It states the proclamation of the new rurikid king. Hark, good norlanders! The tale began as with all auspicious events, without warning! A messenger brought himself to Arichsdorf, proclaiming in the town’s square that a king’s moot is to be held in but only a day! Manfred lord of Arichsdorf was at the time entertaining Vangel, a young scion of the Freysson clan. Upon hearing the messenger’s words Manfred in haste began to ring the town’s bell, calling upon the Arichsdorf levy. Manfred along with Vangel would begin to fasten their armours, and mount their steeds. Vangel would begin to blow his own horn olifant, the loud noise echoing throughout Arichsdorf, his noble retinue loyal to the rurikid line would be quick to rally. Now upon their mounted steeds Manfred’s levee and Vangel’s warband would ride out upon saddled steeds towards Varhelm! They rode without rest to the north, rallying those loyal to the rurikid line as they went, their numbers doubling, even tripling as noble northmen rallied to their call. The rurikid rally would storm up to Alisgrad, finding the city's gates open to them as if the townspeople knew once more an honorable king had come to sit upon the throne. They made their way to the Great Hall throwing open the doors to a scene of Norlandic councilors, many of the rurikid rally would call out the notably empty throne. Halstein Eirikson, Chief of Eirik would rise out of his seat demanding to know who the unexpected visitors were. Theoderic Edvardson, a member of the party, would step forward calling out his name, followed by his brother Caedric, then Manfred Edvardson and Vangel Freysson, each of the rurikid rally calling their name and clan. Manfred quickly took command of the room, demanding a vote be immediately held to elect an Edvard Chieftain. He’d state the cowardly retreat of the other Edvards upon his arrival in such an event would justify such. Halstein rose up, he argued that there was no way for him to know whether or not Manfred was a legitimate Ruric or even an Edvard. The crowd roared, arguing back against Halstein that the facial features of both men were identical, in no way could they not be related. Halstein soon seceded recognizing the vote and Manfred’s legitimacy. Caedric and Theodric spoke up, stating they did not wish for the title, thus Manfred was titled Edvard Chieftain with none to oppose. Vangel would rise up next, asking what all of the rurikid rally had thought: where was the supposed King of Norland? Halstein sidestepped the question saying he was just away despite the fact he hadn’t ruled for nearly four years. Unsurprisingly none had known the King's whereabouts! With the matters of Eirik Chief to be postponed, and the Edvardson feud settled, Manfred rose up again and proclaimed his right for a moot. The crowd roared once more, another arduous argument took place on how the moot shall take place. All men argued to follow tradition, however each citing a different era. Some cited the moot that had followed the abdication of Javier, in which all Norlandic citizens were allowed to vote. Others referenced the Dunharrow-moot, in which only the chieftains of Ruric blood could vote. Eventually the feast hall settled, the Dunharrow-moot would be followed, with Vangel being its most outspoken advocate. To the surprise of all, the king who had left his throne for four years, Vane had entered the hall. Finally, he once more sought to take back rule after abandoning the kingdom to his regent. He decided at the nadir of his power to show himself, meekly walking past the hall of Norlanders he would be seen sneaking unto his throne. Halstein informed him of the events that had unfolded, to which the King would immediately denounce Manfred, claiming him to be the son of a pretender Ruric. And Manfred himself a pretender, and false-claimant to the throne and Edvardson chieftain. He proceeded to deny his right to the moot, and accuse him of treason against the crown. The Edvardson chieftain and the returning king had come to an impasse. The king did not halt in his insults towards Manfred who proceeded to draw his sword, the rurikid rally following his lead. Halstein pleaded for them to stop, for blood to not be spilled amongst the kinsmen; however it seemed both sides had their weapons readied, and the ignorant king would not recognize the only willing Edvardson at the hall as the chieftain. Manfred states his rights are violated, as the king has violated ancient norlandic law as Manfred a man of rurikid blood had the right to a moot as any other. Manfred would go on to state that not once in all of Norlandic history had a moot been denied! The king would not budge, in his ignorance he would violate the laws of his ancestors and desecrate the honored right to a moot. The rurikid rally, realizing their words would not touch the king who hath slept for four continuous years, sprung to action and battle soon ensued. As if the all-father had favored it, the rurikid rally defeated their enemies in ease. The men soon went and bound each of those who opposed them in rope. Manfred, arising victorious, disregarded the king’s vicious desecration of norlandic tradition, he’d continue the moot however, stripping king Vane of his vote on account of such violations of norlandic law. A depiction of the rurikid rally defeating those loyal to the deposed king Vane Manfred would soon ask, who will take the mantle of Freysson? Vangel would step forward, Manfred would support his claim with none to oppose him becoming Freysson chieftain. Vangel would proceed to continue with the moot from earlier, with once more none to oppose him, he would claim to be king. Manfred would support his claim, and Halstein would abstain. Thus the vote would be finished, a new king was chosen, Vangel Freysson the newly crowned King of Norland. Manfred would turn to look around the hall, he’d ask for the Lady of The Grail to take the thorned crown from the deposed king Vane. Halstein would rise up stating a Eiriksson keeper should coronate the new king Vangel. The keeper, Elennore, would go to retrieve the thorned crown before coronating Vangel, declaring he was now the High Chieftain of Rurikid and King of Norland. A depiction of the noble rurikd rally, kneeling before the crowned king, Vangel Freysson, as he was crowned. Long live the King! Long live Vangel Freysson! His Majesty Vangel Freysson, High Chieftain of the Rurikid, King of the Norland, Protector of Highlanders, Chieftain of the Freysson
  5. [!] It was a clear, calm night when the two clans of Eirksson and Freysson met around the Ashtree of Morsgrad. Although they were all kin under Thoromir, most had never met each other before, and for a while cheers were made and greetings were exchanged- a happy occasion for the men who had not seen family in many years, or even decades. As the hour grew late, and the tankards drew empty, the men took to the Eiriksson homestead to discuss the future of their respective clans. Arguments were had, fists were flown, and decisions were made, but as their discussion drew to a close the men involved were now in agreement. By disgrace were we casted down; by flames were our sins erased. The meeting between the Eirikssons and Freyssons in the Eiriksson home, 16th of the Deep Cold, 1764 The Return of the Freyssons A missive from the Clan Freysson King Alvar “The Restorer” Freysson By what right were we given the fate we had, of what crime did you, O Father above!, seek to punish us? Were we not your faithful, your triumphant, your pride? Still we weep for Alvar the First, slain by the treacherous Volaren; still we weep for Alvar the Second, a boy taken from us by a cruel malady. Such times are easy to lament, for it was our guiding hand that led our people to prosperity and peace. When Josef brought war to the Empire, we stayed loyal to our liege lords, the Pertinaxi, despite the desperate pleas from the Marnans for us to turncoat. At Helena, we proved our worth a thousand times over- we slayed masses of the Marnans and held to the very last. Why then, would we suffer the most? As Alvar’s body burned, as Godric gasped his last breath, as our people died and fled from the blights, raids, and diseases, we asked ourselves that very question time and time again. We traveled the world at length in order to find our answer, O’ Father above! It was not our faith that angered you, but our lack of resolve. It was not our triumphs that made you turn your back on us, it was that they were not for our sake, but for the sake of the Pertinaxi. It was not our loyalty that led to our downfall, it was our submission and refusal to fight to be free. The Nordish are not a people to slave for the whims of pompous Imperial overlords, sitting atop flowery seats in their rosen capitals- we are warriors, we are farmers, we are craftsmen. When we knelt before the Empire, we abandoned you and our pride as free men unbound to the lords of the heartlands. We saw our centuries-old fight for independence as a needless display of cruelty and bloodshed, the very malice responsible for our collapse a thousand times before, but now we know that it is the only life we may live. Caedric did not, and has not, submitted to any other but the will of yourself, O’ Father above! By his hand he has given us peace, but not at the cost of our freedom. By his hand he has allowed our realm to prosper, but not at the expense of meddling in foreign affairs. By his hand will he guide us from this day forward; we know the duty of the Nordish and carry it in our hearts evermore. We shall never fail your charge again, O’ Father above!, for to fail you is to fail our people. Too many years have we strayed from Norland, but now, for the first time in our lives, we have truly returned home. With the light of the Father may we emerge from the darkness. A Chieftain Arises Vangel Freysson and Toke Freysson preparing to brawl for the title of Chief of Freysson, 16th of the Deep Cold, 174. It is an ancient tradition that the chieftains of the various Ruric clans take their place not through primogeniture succession, but by the consent of the other members of their clan. Typically the eldest son does inherit his father’s position, for he is the most prepared, but it is not uncommon to see others vy for the title. Upon the death of a chieftain, those who wish to succeed him will put their names forward and argue among each other, and the wider clan itself, as to who should become chieftain. If an agreement cannot be reached, as is usually the case, then a brawl to submission or knockout will occur. Such things rarely result in death, and the brawls draw a great deal of spectators eager to see who will prevail and rule as their clan’s chieftain. At midnight of the 16th of the Deep Cold, 1764, the meeting between the Freyssons and the Eirikssons ground to a halt. Much had been discussed, argumentatively or otherwise, but the men in the room realized that the Freyssons lacked a chief, a man whose say was final. It had not been since the days of Alvar that the Clan Freysson had, or even needed, a chief, but their recent return to Norland made it a matter of great importance. Vangel, son of Donovan, cast his name first. “By right of my father, I am chieftain. Any who wish to oppose me, say so now.” Toke, backed by his kinsmen, obliged. “I am the man who has led us here. I have the support of most of the rest of the Freyssons, and I am more trusted by the people of Morsgrad. Relinquish your claim and recognize me as your chief!” The Freyssons bitterly argued back and forth for several minutes, each man making a case for either Toke or Vangel. The Eirikssons watched intensely, anxious to see who would arise as the leader of their brother-clan, but only a scant few of them dared raise their voice. Although it was a matter that concerned them greatly, the right and responsibility to name a chieftain lay with that clan alone. However, as the night drew even longer, it became clear that no agreement would be reached. A duel it would be. In the arena underneath the Ashwood tree a crowd gathered to see the brawl between Vangel and Toke. The two men, although youthful, were built powerfully and carried themselves as true Nordish men. This would be no easy fight for either of them, and not even the wisest among the crowd had any clue as to who would win. Leif, son of Hakon, stepped into the arena and gave a quick prayer to the Father. With a nod of the head, he gave his assent for the fight to begin and stepped out of the ring to allow the two men to brawl. Toke wasted not a second of time and charged straight for Vangel. Stunned, Vangel suffered a bout of consecutive blows, but he still held firm in the face of the onslaught. When Toke had tired himself, and his throws began to become more sluggish, Vangel sprung forward and delivered a flurry of punches to his fatigued opponent. Toke quickly recovered, meeting might with might, but the writing was on the wall. The fight continued for a few more moments, but a swift uppercut to Toke’s stomach caused him to keel over, ending his hopes to ascend as chieftain. Now, Vangel stands at the head of the Freyssons, finally filling a role that has been vacated for years. The blood of kings runs through his veins, but the challenges ahead are more daunting than a single brawl. Only the Father knows what kind of man the future will make of him, but no matter what, he will have his kin at his back to guide him along the way.

  17. -This notice would be posted in and around Norland- The people of Norland, it pains me so to see you run so ragged in this war. I for one say enough, the King in Ruriskgrad Godden Ruric does nothing. He lets our soldiers and people march out time and time again to there deaths against the Renatians and their allies, and for what? As far as I can see to me it seems like nothing. So what are we supposed to do sit here in a hole dying for a King who does nothing for us. I, Knutt Ruric first born son of the King of past Jory Ruric of the line of Eirikson the rightful king of Norland call a moot of the most urgency to be held in as soon as possible or I fear we may not be able to salvage our Kingdom. I put myself forward as candidate for the moot and any other Ruric who thinks himself capable of the duty may attend and put themselves forward as a moot candidate as well. OOC: Moot to be held in Ruriksgrad April 29th 5pm est
