DECLARATION OF WAR

 

Viceroy Ptah Remneal of Alras remained seated at the head of the council table. His King, Syrio Forel, was absent at the moment, and so the Viceroy was granted the right to take his place, role and voice during council meetings when that occurred. The table is alive with the voices of the council members, until the Viceroy raises a hand to meander their attentions to him.

 

"I believe this shall suffice in our view, and Alras' own view, on Oren."

 

Ptah motions to the scribe, and reads the final draft of the declaration of war.

 

"As a signator of the Treaty of Zion of Year 1455, the sovereign Kingdom of Alras has resolved to endorse the continued peace and prosperity between ourselves, the Grand Kingdom of Urguan, the Rexdom of Krugmar, and the Conclave of Malin. With the recent opening hostilities and eventually present state of declared warfare between the Grand Kingdom of Urguan and the Kingdom of Oren, we believe that future peace and prosperity requires our intervention to support the Dwarven declarators.

 

It is understood perfectly well that the Kingdom of Alras is not bound by the Treaty of Zion to do this. Our own involvement in this coming conflict stems from an entirely moral purpose, rather than to respond to Orenian aggression. In the distant years of Aegis, it was King Pampo Perea of Oren who granted his blessing to our fledging nation as we dissolved the Kal'Alrasian colony. To humankind, we have since owed a great debt, for without his generosity Alras may never have arisen. To some measure, part of this debt was repayed when Alras took within it refugees when Al'khazar was tainted and burned by the corrupted Undead.

 

But it is not paid in full. Humanity has changed since that debt was accrued, so too has the Orenian Kingdom. The old glory of Al'khazar has been perversed, leaving today a mere adumbration of the noble human spirit that once was. This sickness of the soul has also bled into sickness of action, like a rabid dog snapping at those who would harm it not. The hound even cannot remember the dignity it once possessed. So too does the rabid dog attack itself in its own bloodborne madness, as the parts of the hound are cursed to lasting want, anxiety, and violence.

 

 

It is a crime that this has happened to humanity, and a crime that it still lives. We realize the severe justice that we must carry out: it is against the memory of Al'khazar and of King Perea to allow this mockery and tragedy to continue. In our debt to that memory, there is no other moral action that the Kindgom of Alras can pursue but to put this diseased dog to sleep. For this reason, Alras shall collaborate with the Kingdom of Urguan in the war against Oren.

 

To us, this is not a war of glory. It is not a war of revenge. It is not a war of land, of money, of power, of faith or of politics. It is a war of mercy."

 

Ptah Remneal puts the document down, and looks to his fellow councillors. Other avowals of conflict would have stirred the spirit to lust for battle and glory. But here, amongst those council members who remember the Oren of Aegis, the Viceroy only sees inner sorrow.
