A Brief History

 

The Decterum was forged in the years of the Imperium as two bannerhouses, Ruthern and Dunham, pooled their levies together and formed a standing army. Later engulfing the modest Griffon Order in its early years through diplomacy, the Decterum established itself as a major military force. Vowing to protect the Orenian Government and her citizens, the Decterum was mandated as the primary military force of the Kingdom, and has since flourished. Since the day of her formation, the mission statement of the Decterum remains unchanged; the pursuit of military excellence and the first line of defense to mankind.

 

The Decterum has remained in service to Oren for decades, notable leading many a charge under the reign of Heinrik the First. Under the leadership of Lord Ailred Ruthern, the Order continued to prosper well into the colonization of the Fringe and the years after dominance through their mountain fortress.

 

However, the standing Marshal of the time, Lord Ailred Ruthern, had acquired a penchant for power, one which nearly tarnished the Decterum name forever. Brutally slaying their king, the Decterum conducted in one of Ailred’s foul plots. However, justice was quickly restored in the hands of Abner Rahl, whom along with the vast majority of the Decterum officers, recognized Ailred’s wicked act of kingslaying and overthrew him from his tyrannical seat of power. Abner took on the mantle of Marshalship, and the Decterum, slowly but surely through diplomacy, vowed to never act in the name of politics but rather for those whom they have sworn loyalty too.

 

Abner made the decision to swear to the Carrions after deliberate thought of which House was most righteous and true to the Decterum cause. Given that without House Carrion support and lands the Decterum would just be mere fiction, Abner found it righteous to aid those who aided the order. Now the Decterum continues to its duties and as the military retinue of the House under the watchful eye of Marshal Rahl.

 

What We Do

The Decterum continues serving as the main military retinue under the Carrion Prince, and plays a vital role in domestic and foreign affairs and threats. Its goals are to protect the House of Carrion, its People and followers, and in times of war to fight for the Realm of Man, alongside their fellow Humans. Primarily made up of highlanders, it is the only permanently standing military and knightly order protecting the Raevir people from harm, and to this day maintains military excellence in their lands and abroad.

 

 

 

Notable Achievements

 

-Full Mobilization in defense of the Holy Kingdom of Oren when the Dwarven, Elvish and Silverblade rebels attempted to invade Schattenburg, Anthos.

-Fully mobilized and lead the war against the Grand Kingdom of Urguan and the Silverblade Rebels under King Heinrik Carrion I

-Decterum was the sole military force for the majority of Heinrik's reign to defend the defenseless from Scourge attacks and foreign threats

→ Participated on the reclamation of the Dreadfort

→ Participated on the assault of the entrance to the North

→ Lead the human forces in the assault and slaying of Skidrow the Dreaded, one of Setherien’s four      Lieutenants

→ Played major role in the final assault on Setherien, and the eventual slaying of Setherien

-Establishment of the City of Vekaro and it's fortress

-Full mobilization against the Zionists upon their their declaration of war against the Holy Kingdom of Oren

-Granted the refugees of Kaphro protection and a place to stay during the razing of their town

The Tenets of The Decterum

The Decterum’s tenets are the rules and guidelines that every order member should know by heart. They are what keep order in the absence of an officer, and are what guide the hearts of the Decterum’s men and women, to keep them from corruption and heathenry.

 

1. You shall believe wholeheartedly in the True Faith of Oren, and the Creator.

 

2. You shall hold no other allegiance, and be pure to your oath. Be not corruptible.

3. Be calm, strong, polite and resolute. Show valour in the field and chivalry at home.

 

4. Never surrender or compromise yourself or your brothers. Bring about your honor, or death.

 

 

5. Triumph through discipline. Submit to this law - first my equipment, then myself.

 

6. Grasp the purpose of each duty, so you may one day take up the torch of leadership.

7. Against an honorable foe, fight with chivalry, but to the dishonorable, extend no quarter.

 

8. Keep true to your people. Offer your life in place of the innocent, until your last breath.

 

9. You shall be strong, true, and loyal. You shall be the warrior incarnate of the Order.

RANKS:

 

Unoathed

 The Unoathed are comprised of any and all new applicants to the order. This rank is used to sort through the rabble and those otherwise unworthy of joining the Order.

 

Ensign

The Ensigns are comprised as the promising enlisted ranks that have a future within the decterum. They will focus on basic training and general education of all sorts, raiding, and getting to know how war and the order itself works.
 

Torum

The Torums make up the future backbone of the order. Torums focus mainly on training, learning how to fight, ride, and behave when in public, as well as the basics of chivlary and diplomacy. Those who are torums are eventually expected to “take the spurs”, and become knight-brothers.
 

Knight-Brother

The Decterum's Finest. Knight-Brothers provide good examples for their “younger brother” ranks, leading when an officer isn’t present, being sent out on private missions and assignments, and being groomed to become officers.
 

 

 

Officer Ranks

 

TIER ONE
 

Knight-Warden
The Knight-Warden work as the military officers of the Decterum. They lead military events such as combat training, raids, and war. They are also tasked with making sure the security of the Keep, Vekaro, and other Decterum holdings are maintained and improved upon. 

 

Knight-Justicar

The Knight-Justicar serves as the economic and diplomatic head of the Order. He maintains Order Finances, Investments and Holdings, and attends to all but the highest level of diplomacy and foreign relations. Knight-Justicars will sit in Council with the Vindicator and Marshal when holding a tribunal. 
 

TIER TWO
 

 

Knight-Vindicator

The Knight-Vindicator serves as the second in command of the entire order. Alongside the Marshal, he issues mission directives to the men, and will stand in place for the Marshal when he is unavailable. He offers privy council to the Marshal, and often takes up the training of would-be officers and torums personally.

 

Marshal

The Marshal of the Order serves as its absolute head. The Marshal sets Order Policy, handles top-tier diplomacy, promotions, public relations and recruitment. Alongside the Vindicator, he issues private directives to the men and works closely with the Carrions.

 

 

 

Specialized Ranks

 

Sacerd (Sahkehrd)-

The Sacerd’s role inside the order is to act as both a scribe and personal priest within the Order. Reciting prayers before battles, and holding private religious ceremonies once an Elven week is part of the Sacerd’s duty. Being both a Scribe/Historian, the Sacerd attends large meetings that The Decterum go to, and also teaches new members of the Order the fundamentals of

reading and writing, along with history lessons.

 

Quartermaster / Smithy

The all around Smith and weapon designer in the Decterum, his primary responsibilities are to forge armour and weapons with iron provided by The Decterum’s stockpile. Repairing armour and weapons for fellow members of The Decterum is one of his day to day tasks, and to take regular inventory of the Order’s supplies and write up shipment orders for more goods if required. The Quartermaster also offers apprenticeships to those willing to learn the skills of becoming a well balanced Smith.

 

Hospitaller

The Hospitaller is a rank that requires constant dedication to learning the art of healing and mastering the knowledge of herbal remedies. Acting as a medic on the battlefield, and a health doctor within the home of The Decterum, the Hospitaller is responsible for keeping members of the Order healthy.

 

Witcher

The rank of Witcher is given to those who specialize in the tracking and destruction of monsters and beasts that threaten the realm of Man. The Witcher is tasked with discovering and learning about the beasts and monsters that inhabit this realm, and is to find out said monsters' weakness and hunt it down, using his/her Decterum brothers and sisters to accomplish such a task. The Witcher is a rank equivalent to Hospitaller, in the way that both are ranks are for those who show a talent in their fields. The Witcher is to keep the Marshal up to date on the conditions of the realm regarding monsters, so they themselves must all be up-to-date.

 

 

 

 

 

Weaponry

 

Melee

 

Arming Sword

 

One handed cruciform blades, the Arming Sword provides an incredibly well balanced weapon suitable for cutting or thrusting. Carried almost universally everyday by the Decterum, it is used in training, patrols, and lesser combat ordeals with frightening effect.

 

Longsword

 

The backbone of Decterum fencing, The Longswords of old Kaedrin design provide unmatched hewing, stabbing, and cutting ability. Designed for ceremony and battle alike, the Longsword can be wielded with one or both hands, and through an unmatched variety of techniques and versatility, it provides the quickest means to dispatch any foe.

 

Halberd

 

Long shafted pole-arms, the Halberd is used by Decterum soldiers primarily against mounted opponents. Reaching upwards to 6 feet, the Decterum Halberd possesses the required stabbing, crushing, and grappling ability to meet any opposition.

 

Dirk

 

A short, cruel stabbing weapon, the dirk is the supplementary side weapon of nearly all Decterum combatants. Unparalleled thrusting and ease of use makes it a deadly

efficient weapon at dispatching armored foes.

Ranged

 

Longbow

 

Carved from large, single staves of Yew, the Longbow provides ranged artillery to Decterum troops. Fired solely or in volley, the Decterum Longbow traditionally spans 6 feet, possesses a draw weight of 120 lbs, and is capable of punching through plate if operated correctly.

 

Crossbow

 

Possessing iron plated lathes with yew stocks, Decterum Crossbows provide close range artillery with a low range, but brutal power. With a crannequin for enhanced winding, the crossbow is small, easy to use, and above all else; efficient.

Conflict within The Decterum

 

 

 

If there is conflict between two or more members of the Decterum, it is in the Decterum’s best interest to solve it immediately.

Possession- If the conflict involves around the possession of something, the conflict is to be brought to the Marshal, who will then determine the rightful owner, and will punish the other accordingly.

Questioning of Loyalty- Should one member question the loyalty of another member, the two (or more) involved in the conflict are to compare combat banners-the banners which were first started as a Convert. If the accused’s banner is lacking significantly, then the accuser may bring the matter before the Marshal.

Racial Conflict within the Decterum- If there is conflict between two or more members revolving around their race (s), and then it is to be brought before the Marshal.

Physical Conflict- If there has been physical alterations between members of the Decterum, any witnesses of said conflict are to inform the Marshal immediately. The Marshal will allow those involved to participate in a duel of honour (not to the death) to allow the two to vent their anger. No matter who the winner is, it is expected for the conflict to never take place again.

Treason- If a member of the Decterum is found, without a doubt, to have been conducting treasonous acts against either House Carrion or the Decterum itself, the member involved is to be executed publicly, removed of all titles, and branded an enemy of the Decterum.

Decterum in the Field: How to Act

 

     While abroad, members of the Decterum are expected to act with honour while representing House Carrion and the Decterum. As a soldier, you are expected to treat our friends and allies with respect, assist them if needed, and cause them no harm. Should you observe a crime being committed against a Decterum brother or sister, or against one of our allies, you are expected to report it to the nearest available officer via bird, and provide assistance.

 

Those who are caught causing harm to our allies or a preacher of the Faith will be dealt with quickly and severely.

Punishments for breaking the above rules may include: Brandings, Lashings, beatings, or a form of execution for the most serious of cimes.
