Remove Ban Reports And Appeals

 Share

Ban reports and appeals are undoubtedly the most prevalent source of drama on the forums. When somebody ban reports a pugsier, everybody goes to see it and laugh or cry about it. When a prominent member of the community makes an appeal after being banned, and gets denied, said player's cult of personality will throw a fit about it. In short, nothing good comes from ban reports. Except banning those filthy pvp item hungry trolls.

In order to minimize the drama, I suggest making the following changes to ban reports, appeals, and banning policy:

  1. Stop issuing really long bans. Staff, the /tempban command is your friend. If somebody does something minor (basically not cybering, pugsying, hacking, or duping), temp ban them for a few days, a week, or two weeks. No need to use /ban and force players to "make an appeal" as they have to now. It's inefficient.
  2. Hide the ban report and appeal threads from players. Both ban reports and appeals are necessary, to some extent. However, there's no reason that we need to see them, unless we're directly involved. As such, tailor the subforums so that players can create topics and see the sticky threads, but only the staff can view the topics created by players. The GM responding to a ban report could simply PM those involved to gather each side of the story.

Hopefully, this would ensure that players could still effectively report misdoings while reducing the drama. It would also allow players to report things anonymously, as to avoid negative backlash from other players.

The title was a bit misleading, but I support a hidden ban report and appeal forum.

I think it'd become too tedious to deal with the hidden forums. Allowing only witnesses and such to see the threads.

As for ban times, if anything I think we should advocate longer ones. Too many players see 2-day bans as slaps on the wrist instead of an actual punishment.

I made a similar suggestion for PM BRs, would be better than the system now

As Pops said the title was a bit misleading, but I can see it as a good idea to hide the reports from the players. It'll decrease the amount of drama going on while at the same time allowing them to report those who need to be reported and so on, so forth. I'd support the idea of players being able to make topics in this sub-section, but only GMs and Admins having the ability to see these reports. Whoever takes said report would probably have to make a group forum PM with those involved, but overall it's a good idea.

I feel as if appeals should remain however, though the same idea as above. A player who's dealt with the issues should have to appeal in the same type of sub-forum to ensure that it's documented and the other GMs won't have a problem figuring these things out. All and all a good idea, 10/10 would view again.

This is essentially what I am proposing.

And the title was for rep :^)

Seems reasonable. It'd definitely cut down a lot on people who rage and file a BR in the heat of the moment.

Appeals force players to swallow their pride and admit they were banned for a reason. Tempbans do not.

Seems like a good idea. Its not very good for the community to know all of that drama.
