Explosives In 4.0

Back in Asulon, I created a pyrotechnic halfling character whose sole purpose was to cause mischief using his various explosive devices. From making and blowing up TNT blocks in the Vale, to inventing the first form of fireworks using a vertical TNT cannon before the actual firework items were introduced to Minecraft, my character's existence revolved around explosives being present in LoTC.

In 3.0-3.5, TNT has long been disabled and the only mechanical form of explosives that still remain are fireworks, which to my knowledge are completely uncraftable at the moment due to no form of the gunpowder item existing. I'm not really worried though, as it is a temp map.

     My first two questions are:

  • Will gunpowder be reintroduced in 4.0 so fireworks can be crafted once more?
  • Will the TNT block be reintroduced in 4.0?

The first issue that comes to mind with reintroducing TNT is that it can easily be abused in raids/battles and is a griefing tool. Back in Asulon with Vaq's skills plugin, TNT could only be crafted, placed and ignited by those with a high skill in engineering (or whatever the skill name was). With the new skills plugin, will there be a profession that allows the use of TNT and limits it so not everybody can use it? If so, would the anti-grief plugin that regenerates the damage a TNT block causes when exploding be reintroduced?

Thoughts?

As a dwarf who loves explosions, I support TNT.

I would say add it back completely. Griefs can be easily rolled back, and the griefer banned.

Perhaps, make TNT very expensive to craft.

To be fair I agree with this, let people expend resources on TNT and have them make the choice of where to use it. If they waste it, it's their loss. And one TNT block really doesn't do much damage.

Could also allow people to go Uruk style deeping wall on defender fortifications which might be pretty cool

We have a pretty swell plugin that deals with the valuable nature of items via the amount of time it takes to gather resources then craft the item. I think TnT ought to still be crafted with the same materials as always; Just integrate it into the crafting plugin like all the rest of the items in a manner that is pretty decent. TnT is thought of as very destructive but even when TnT was open for free use it wasn't really used all that much, what I'm saying is if it does get put into the plugin, don't treat it like it's a weapon of mass destruction. It adds a cool element to RP, combat and so forth, it's worth having.

I won't lie, I do find it ironic that the one single person who blew up the entire Dwarf army is saying this ;)

I also support the reintroduction of PvP and canons in some sort of manner. To be honest I see no fault in them and I think they were a cool little piece of RP that added to the fun. It also gave ship to ship combat a purpose and we can maybe do some naval combat again like in Asulon. It really isn't all that bad considering at the moment GMs work siege weapons all the same with little regard for how they actually work anyway.

We had it in Aegis. It was all fine because we didn't have so many people looking for ways to "win".

I think it's worth a try for 3.5.5, just to judge how people will behave with TNT. But I suspect due to the temporary nature of the map will go overboard... If it's expensive and takes a long while to explode like Kowaman suggested, then I think that will be sufficient. I reckon if it were to take longer than diamond armour to craft, then it would be a rare thing.

Just limit the amount of TNT one can use or just limit it to count as siege equipment. I love some TNT as long as you don't have a character barreling around the map with inventories full of it who chooses to explode everything that stands in his way.

See, one of the current things about the professions plugin is the lack of progression from each profession. Some of them seem rather useless to have someone main and perfect to the highest levels, while some have very noticeable benefits.

In Aegis and Asulon, people rarely had TNT, and when they did, you knew it was for something special, not just some random explosive some guy wants to light for PvP. There really wasn't a problem with TNT and quite frankly, don't know why it was removed, it allowed for increased reliance on strategy, better traps exc.

What I would suggest is that we reimplement TnT, while limiting it to a very experience Miner. With the addition of reduced damage, and 100% block drop chance with a 2x drop per item blown up. That way miners would normally use the TNT to blow up a vein of some sort for extra minerals. Make the crafting time something ridiculous like 1 hour starting at master miner. That way it stays around that time and is reduced very little given the sheer amount of mining you'll have to do. This also makes sieges a lot better since it defeats the common construction of buttoned walls, impenetrable fortresses exc. It also reestablishes several interesting traps and extra sources of creative RP.

TNT really was never used for 100% PvP, though it kind of was, it was never spam able, and was never really OP since it does practically nothing to someone in diamond armor, and is somewhat effective against an iron armored player.

I remember being a crazy dwarf who was insane with his TNT :(. I had every bridge, stair, roadway and escape laced with TNT to prevent intruders from climbing stairs :( .  It also provided with some very nice RP at the time that could be used in several ways. I remember to help clear Mt.Ire faster I RP'd as a master blacksmith who began learning about explosives, using them to clear out the area quite fast by placing tnt and running the wire from it, then pressing down on the lever to blow it up. It provided very fun RP to everyone there and was something people had to watch out for. Watch out! Stay clear! Explosives! Just as it should be.

+1

Make TnT's ability to blow up blocks be toggeable, that way it can still be used for breaking walls in sieges, but not for being a general nuisance once you have perms to a town.

If it is used as a mining tool instead of a tool for war, then perhaps tnt can be modified to only destroy stone, stone bricks, and cobblestone.

I agree with this post and Pok's idea of reinstituting the cannons in the LoTc. When cannons were still around, naval battles were available and fun to do. In the Teutonic-Dwarven Punitive War in Asulon, there was a naval battle between Oren and the Dwarves. It was quite fun but I lost both my ships in the battle but destroyed the Dwarves' behemoth. :p

I can't seem to get the link to work :( but you can search for "lord of the craft naval battle"
