Should we make Quenya Elvish the official elf language?

While chatting in skype/TS/OOC, a lot of people have been wanting to make the official elven language Quenya. Some reasons why include a fully fleshed out vocabulary, a functioning grammar system, the fact that there are rosetta stone equivalents for Quenya, and there are plenty of translators to help people who want to RP elves not have to struggle to be able to RP as an elvish-speaking elf.

I believe the fact that Elvish is broken and can't be spoken correctly is part of lore and is part of the /point/ of our Elvish language.

but they could use another language to fill the gaps.

not sure about the choice but yes i think something nice should be implemented.

pretty much this. if you want to expand the language, do so in rp.

This language was created by a player of the server for the server. What more needs to be said?

Isn't the language broken for a reason as well because Elvish has 'power' of some sort. Besides, changing it ruins a lot of things on the server

That breaks lore and is pointless. If you want to take words from Quenya and introduce them as actual elven words then by all means do whatever you do to make a word part of the elvish language doing that.

Discussion already had. You cannot retcon the language as it is as it is engrained in lore and would be quite impossible; If you want to start speaking another kind of elven you're more than welcome to but good luck getting that accepted in character.

The language is an in-character issue not an OOC matter and you cannot force a server-wide language change via OOC.

If you'd like to submit lore for a second kind of elven, hey, go right ahead, but its not going to replace the current one.

The elven language was lost. Now the elves are recovering it, slowly, yes, but it wouldn't make sense lore wise to just change it or have a fully fleshed out language from day to night is just dumb.

For two years we've been able to work with this language, and are now able to make most sentences with words that cover most major areas. I don't see the point in changing it. Remember, that Elven is not a official language, as it's ran by players, so you may use whatever language you wish and no one will stop you OOC. IC may be a different story.

The current language was lost (made illegal, actually, for mysterious reasons that current events in Athera have begun to shed light on) and is being recovered, and has become quite ingrained into the culture of current elves. There is a whole story-line of events going on in the elven area that involves the LotC Elven. Replacing it would be kind of disappointing after all this time, and it wouldn't make sense for our elven characters to suddenly be able to fluently speak another language that hadn't existed before.

At this point it is literally so ingrained into new pieces of lore which have already influences the world that changing it would literally disassemble months of work and lore.

Maybe not Retcon the language, keep it as sort of the latin of elvish. But have spoken elvish be Quenya.

Crayfishchris and I were working on this up until about school started and junk and it's not even close to being finished, but if anyone would like to help they'd be welcome to it!

Anyways, the following is sort of the beginnings of a kind of "Elven Textbook" complete with explanations and exercises (solutions too!) for those interested. We thought it might make it easier for folks to learn the ins and outs of the Elven Language what with all its little funny intricacies and unusual grammar.

We weren't planning on releasing it for awhile, but anyways..:

Sidenote: I cannot guarantee everything in there is correct!! This has not been seriously proofread as far as I know!

I realize the Elven Language most probably has some flaws and can be a difficult to get a hang of, and.. I'm also not terribly familiar with Quenya/Sindarin so it's difficult for me to form any sort of judgement between the two, but I really love that the server was able to come up with all these fabulous and interesting different languages and I hope that maybe there's a way we can make them easier for everyone to use. ^ ^
