The Colborns

 

 

 

 The Colborn family, a family born from the flame and shimmering coals of a family once whole but broken since times long past. The time has come for this once prosperous family to reunite under one banner, the feuds that once broke them apart settled with the new generation at the head. This very new generation accepting the ancient bonds that the family once held and their once grandiose culture. This and the family being lead by the stern and warm man known as Carr Colborn was the sign of the families rebirth that many had been waiting for. 

 

 

“On this saints day I write with great delight that a family has been reunited, the north is once again our home and here we shall remain. The family that walks through fire and back without a flinch, this is The Colborns bonds which cannot be broken. I send this to you that wander the lands without your kin at your side, come join your family again in this attempt to rekindle that which was washed away by internal conflict! To you my brothers and sisters I send this word for the new era, for our rebirth has come upon us and it’s time for us to once again stand through fire against the world together!”

With the horns blown and the rekindling begun the kinsmen, men, women and children that still believed in that which once was would start their trek towards the north. It was the sound of progress something which had been obstructed from the Colborns for too long.

The rekindled culture they once had of Yngling reborn into something new which combined that of the various old standards and new ones, created from their split across the land and ideologies they adopted from those areas.  It combined new and old that which once was their Yngling culture had thusly been reborn with a flare of nuance into Scylfing. This new culture the improved family bond that they wished for so long to regain and with hopes for a secure future this is what they would build the foundation on.

Hello there friendos of LoTC, my name is Julius and i’m posting this so that those of you that are interested to play in the Colborn family can make a application and sign up. The family strives to create good and enjoyable RP that results in a fun experience for all sides,  I am searching for people who has good english skills and timezones are not an issue. If you feel you are a person who are not a good rper or not done a lot of it feel free to still apply, I gladly personally help people to learn how to RP and the sort.

 

This post serves as a medium for mainly the Colborn family but also as the Scylfing culture place of all knowing, you are allowed to have families that follows this culture but it would be great if you ask me first, if you have any personal questions you can always hit me up on skype, Juliusaakerlund. The Barbanov-Colborn pact of 1500

 

 

The Barbanov-Colborn pact of 1500 is the birth of an agreement that would later unintentionally lead to the rebirth of the Colborn family. The pact was made late in the winter of 1500, it was a pact between two men, brothers, comrades and the closest thing you can get to family without shared blood. It was a promise, a pact that would be honored for as long history will venture. This pact between Carr Colborn and Karl Barbanov, two individuals with very different titles and power but very similar lives and questions. Their kinship formed through the slight of chance and randomness of the world, met through fate itself and its forever growing web.

That day Carr Colborn looked into the eyes of his friend and saw family, something he had wished to have his entire life but had always been an eternity away from his grasp. That was the day he swore to his friend that he would follow him no matter what in death or glory. It was not a light promise and he knew this and yet spoke with confidence, he served him with pride without a doubt or question in his mind.

“My Lord i see you as family and i wish you to know that no matter what i will follow you wherever the road leads or ends, in death or glory i will be there by your side until it all ends. If i could I would wish that my sons or daughters could share the bond i share with you on this day, so that they may serve your children just the way i did for you.”

The Colborns use various words from the Anadian language which originates from the first of their kind, and the name itself named after Anadan The Wise the first family head and creator of the Colborns family. (The Anadian language itself is heavily influenced by germanic and scandinavian languages.)

The Light At The Horizon

 

 

  Things were moving along well for the Colborn family as more and more members from various branches of the family showed up in the north. Together Carr Colborn and his kinsmen ventured further north, claiming a piece of land in the mesa that had never seen the touch of civilization before. It was here they would make their home and grow just like a tree spreads its roots into the ground. They did not care for titles or power they simply wished to regain the bonds that they once had. It was with this in mind they molded and shaped the land for a great family to live, it slowly progressing in the direction and vision they could see on the horizon. They called it Carrandall combining old and new, the past and the present into one. It was a name formed out of two leaders that of Carr and Anadans, it was a homage to the both of them and proved the respect their kinsmen had for their deeds. The family had set down their foot and laid out their roots across the north as they worked for the betterment of it. The nearby cities of Polaris and Ambrosa growing and changing aswell, it was an age of change and it nearly made one forget how much war there was around them. They looked to the old gigantic statues of Carrandall seeing their glorious and prideful stance through time, thinking of the cultures that once was and civilizations that fell to war. If anything it reminded them very much of their own past and the present situations with the war effort, they however could not stop themselves from smiling like children with a dream. It was as if they had been struck with hope in the darkness they could see the light, it was the light at the horizon.  

 

 

 

The Dunamis-Oren Wars

 

 

 

 

The Horde its semi coalition and The Oren Empire was clashing against each other in combat every week, the roads could be seen filled with soldiers nearly everyday if not the occasional Uruk slavers would be present. It was a sight many had grown used to maybe too used to, one could say it was a constant struggle with both sides winning in their own ways but they would of course not see it that way themselves. It was in these fights I and the order would stand with the Oren forces in front of the keeps of Dunamis, lead by my Lord Karl Barbanov on the 13th of Sun’s Smile, 1501. It was a day like no other warm and filled with the sound of clashing swords and rustling chainmail, it was a sound nearly enticing as the men would be used to its eccentric adrenaline rushed effects. If it were not for the vigilant commanders it felt like the air was toxic enough to cause a frenzy of uncontrolled blood and carnage. It was not a lie to say that everyone was on the edge as the commanders lead them towards combat, there was always that feeling of wanting to break ranks and just charge, a constant fight of urges. This was all feelings I had not seen before it was something that had been hidden from me, the truth of combat and the actual air it felt nearly like someone was pumping you full of it and you were just ready to fly. War however was much less than glorious it was carnage and bloodshed, wounds and screams that of pain and suffering but also a fight for a common goal. The arrows flying and the swords clashing, bones breaking and men falling it was not for the faint of heart. The smell was like no other a pungent and irony putrid odor that could hardly stand up to any description. The fighting would tear on ones mind it was not easy to keep your head straight, however the brotherhood and camaraderie was the pillar which we all leaned against in our thoughts. It was either that or the family and nation we protected.

 

War brought people together that was the truth i learned, one moment you stand next to men of coat of arms from foreign cities one never ventured the next you are saving the life of a nobleman. It was like a nuance of colors shaping into one moving forward towards a shared goal. It made one realise that there was more unity then one can believe, it was as warming as a group of sweaty men with heavy iron could be. It was a sad thought to realise that one day these men with their own nuance would spread across the lands once again splintered. I am sure that in the years to come these fights will be the talk of a rambling man in a bar but for those in this moment it’s as real as it gets. I had heard of war all my life but never thought myself to ever participate in it, it’s nearly amusing to think of how ignorant I was towards its reality. It’s with this in mind I leave this fight enlightened but troubled, confused but at the same time answered.

One thing however is for certain… War.. is one... cruel and exotic…. beast.

 

 

 

The Ways of a Scylfing

 

 

 

     Mannerisms

Someone who follows the Scylfing culture has an open mindset, freethinking outlook and strong family ties and therefore would try to take care of his/her kinsmen and family members, they also are not racist by nature and have a tendency to be curious of other cultures and people. They usually lead a life that reflects this clearly and often share their opinion on such topics.

The Scylfings seek out knowledge and various arts with interest because of their openness, there are few of them that enjoys being told what to do by another unless that person is someone they respects and believe capable of leading them. This is usually why a family head of the Colborns are considered the leader of the Scylfings, the title comes with great respect and therefore anyone of the culture would listen to him/her. It’s however custom that if possible two heads of the two different genders should exist, it’s only not possible when there is not a person of such stature within the culture or Colborn family.

The Scylfings have an interest in being self reliant and independent as people and therefore practice the arts of fighting incase a situation where it’s needed arises. They will also teach themselves in many other various subjects and techniques for betterment and self reliance, however these varies from person to person depending on their aims and ambitions. This also makes the Scylfings generally knowing in a assortment of things and useful. This also making them formidable workers that always have ideas to share with their fellows on how to improve things.

The Scylfings have a strong belief in gender equality and thusly is one of the few groups in the north that makes sure that both genders are treated equally, it’s rare to find someone who follows the culture that treats women differently from men or vice versa. This also leads to some weird cultural/social clashing with others which mostly isn’t that problematic.

It’s usual for a Scylfing to greet someone by putting their arm against their torso as they bow their upper body forwards. This is all symbolic and shows a sort of openness and attention towards the person before them.

The Scylfings have a strong sense of pride or honor and thusly don’t like when someone lies about them or tries to use dishonorable ways against them, they usually react strongly against such behaviour such as: harming children, using family or innocents as hostages or shields, blackmailing, lying, false accusations, etc. This however is not on the scale where this is all they think about it’s simply something which they follow, their pride and honor refers more so to their lifestyle and deeds rather than their demeanor.

The Scylfings are a joyous and happy cultural group that tries their best to improve society and help others as much as possible, spreading happiness to the others around them is very much something they make sure to do. It’s very unusual to see a Scylfing be unhappy they usually try to look at the bright side of things.

The Scylfings do not all learn the Anadian language though they nearly always know various Anadian sayings, the ones that take the time to learn the Anadian language however do get a lot of respect for doing so. They however only speak this language at important occasions or around other kinsmen sayings being the one exception.

The Scylfings would defend their families and kinsmen to the death without even flinching and whenever they fail to do so it’s a great blow to them, this creates a great bond between them which makes the culture feel like one big family. The people in the culture will take care of each other as if they were related by blood.

Scylfings don’t care much for titles or power themselves and don’t change their behaviour if such titles are granted upon them, they will however act accordingly in their own way as they gain more responsibility.

The Scylfings great love for their family and kinsmen makes them reluctant to part ways with their last name and thusly will rarely change their last name when married, if possible they would much rather prefer the name of the person they marry change or both their last names are kept.

 

The Scylfings dislike irrational behaviour and people that are too prideful to accept that they are wrong or improve themselves. This is seen as great disrespect something that surely can annoy a Scylfing or make them dislike someone.

  Laws

 

1.  If a feud occurs the parties involved may challenge each other to a holmgang and the winner will be determined the correct one, however for a feud to go as far as a holmgang is shunned upon by the rest of the culture and shows bad spirit. The only times it should be used is in scenarios where there are no other possible outcome. There is a possibility for the person to get someone else to represent them if they are clearly outdone.

 

     The holmgang itself being a dual between two people within a squared or circled area that is not allowed to be exitted, the first person to admit defeat or exit the   circle/square is declared the loser and thusly proclaimed wrong. The ritual itself being held either within Carrandall or in the wilds, it’s spectated by the respective kinsmen of the people involved. The person who loses must honor their loss and accept the results, people who keep the feud or problem going are shunned for their bad spirit and behaviour.

2.) The Colborns and Scylfings believe in a system called the Weregild, it’s the system at which everything is priced and compensated for if one illegally does something to ones kindred. If a family member decides to do something dishonorable or thievery they are not only met by county law but family law, this is to deter family members from such unpleasantries but at the same time show none acceptance for such actions.The prices varies but they can be repaid in various ways not only through money, but it’s expected of the guilty parties family to help in the repayment unless the person is exiled from the family. This is a last resort however and most families will help their next of kin as long as they show regret for their actions.

3.) Forced marriages are not allowed this includes arranged marriages, the two people who gets married are to both agree to do so willingly. The Scylfings often believe that a relationship should be between two people who trust and love, not two people who don’t know each other and is wary.

4.) It’s possible to get adopted into the Scylfing culture through a certain proof that one meet a criteria set by the current family head at the time, This criteria is called Anadans’s wisdom. The only other way is if one is a young child without parents, If the person is a adult that has shown the criteria they are told they are able to become a scylfing, if taken further and the person is interested they are told what they need to do.

 

It’s costum for the person to change their name to symbolise their rebirth into the Scylfing culture, this name is either their old name changed to sound more Scylfing like or a completely new one using Scylfing culture as base. This shows that the person in question has accepted the ways of the Scylfing wholeheartedly.

 

In the next step the person in question celebrates their new life with the rest of the Scylfings in the area, this is usually done by throwing a party of sorts where the person involved is given gifts by each person attending.

5.) The families that follow Scylfing all have a coat of arms incorporating the stellar white tree to show their bond.
