The Equerl

The Equerl is an animal which roams the snow forests, they are attracted to the smell of Mali’ame (wood elves) and Halflings because they give of a natural smell, Mali’ame and Halfling are able to ride these animals, but need a special saddle, since they are light and smell quite natural, if any other try to find them, they would find themselves in pain on the floor, or would break the Equerl’s bones. The Equerl mostly in large trees where they make large hollows which can fit at least 5 of these 6 ft long animals which are covered in fur. ((They look a bit like large sloths)).

Description

Fur: Equerl’s fur is thick and carries a lot of bark. Their fur colour depends on what type of trees they are born in, if one is born in a spruce tree it will have spruce coloured fur and will probably live in spruce tree, as it blends in with that tree. The fur is full of dirt and mud.

Face: Their faces are always white with a brown tinge in it ((Drawing Below)) They have big wide eyes which are mostly blue, but I have come across a rare Equerl with black eyes. They have medium sized noses which have small nostrils.

Feet: Their feet are leathery, hard and they have indents which varies from Equerl, these indents are like a Humans finger prints. The feet help them to climb up and down trees.

Hands: Their hands are similar to their feet and have flexible fingers to help grab onto branches.

Body: They have strong builds which has improved over time from them grabbing onto branches. The normal Equerl’s grow to about 6ft long and about 85kg-90kg, most of this is in there arm muscle. They also have thick hair all of it. The leader can be 6”7ft and over 100kg as they are the strongest in the Equery (Equerl’s pack)

Behaviours: Equerl’s live in Tal’ans [Translation Part of Many] of 10-15 other Equerl’s. They dig out hollows in trees to live in, they have a strong connection to the tree they are born, their fur turns the colour of the tree they are born in. They can live up to 400 years and mature at the age of 30. If a being other than a Mali’ame or Halfling tries to saddle it, it will thrash about and swing at you. They are mostly docile but if threatened will defend and use their strong arms to punch and kick. They only let Mali’ame and Halflings on because they smell earthy and like nature, they are also very light and good with creatures. The children are called Equl and learn to climb trees at the age of 10 ((This would be equal to a 2 year old human, as they get 5x older)). Equl are very energetic and spend most of their time as a child mixing with others in the Tal’an. Average sleep time 14 hours 10am-8pm.

Sounds: Equerl’s make a distinct, deep sound. ((Like a Gorilla)). They have a complicated language which consists of a mixture of long and short sound, high and low pitches.

Food: They mostly eat bugs, but they eat wild pigs and even deer.

Other Information:

They can be hunted for their thick fur but Mali’ame do not as they use them as a mode of transport up into trees. Hunters usually go when they are going to sleep and kill them when they are in the hollows.

They have a system where the leader is the strongest, he beat the last leader in a fist fight. Elders advise the leader about decisions and the others go out and hunt for food. They attack prey from above in the trees.
