History of the Order
In the slovenly years of peace following the Schism War, the size and structure of the Orenian Army began to seriously deteriorate. Having bested, for all intents and purposes, the entirety of the world in war, the Kingdom no longer saw the need to maintain such brazenly rowdy and expensive armies. Members of the 2nd Akovian Regiment, one of the most well known and critically acclaimed militant groups of the war, began to steadily trickle out. So sudden was this leaving-of-arms that the Duke of Akovia (now, Vanaheim) saw quickly that action was needed to prevent the militant collapse of his lands. The Duke quickly called forth his most loyal and experienced military men; such heroes of the Schism war, and ages of Orenia past, as Drake Lancefeld, and Octavianus, of the well known Bracchus family. Octavianus was duly charged with the reformation of the Ducal Militia, to maintain a strong arm for the challenging times to come.

 

 

 

Purpose
The Vydrian Order serves a dual purpose; to act as the constant and official military presence within Vanaheim, and to espouse and further the ideals of their patron, the late King Andrik Vydra. In times of war, the Order will serve as the core of the Ducal Army of Vanaheim.

 

 

 

Tenets
1. Your allegiance to the Vydrian Order and to the Almighty Creator shall be constant and unwavering.
2. You shall not steal from another member of the Order. The punishment for this heinous crime is nothing less than exile until death. All of your worldly possessions shall be stripped from you, and if you are ever seen again you will be met with naught but cold steel.
3. Obstacles do not exist to be surrendered to, but only to be broken.
4. You are no child of Krug, cursed with mindless bloodlust. Do not let your anger cloud your mind.
5. You are no child of Urguan, crippled by foolhardy greed. Do not allow your lust for material gain lead you astray.
6. You are no child of Malin, stricken with cowardice and prone to underhanded schemes. Stand strong beside your brothers and never abandon them.

 

 

 

Chain of Command

 

 

Senior Command

 

Marshal
The Marshal commands the Order in its entirety, and is a man who has proven himself to be an exceptional leader both at home and on the field. The Marshal must be a master of tactics and logistics to excel in his duties. A man of few words, the Marshal is required to be adaptable and collected. He has the final say in all matters.

 

Commander
Second in command of the Order, the Commander answers only to the Marshal and is also responsible for maintaining the troops. His duties can range from keeping morale up to leading the men on the field of battle.

 

 

High Guard

The High Guard is a small, handpicked group of those serving men of the order judged most skillful, experienced, disciplined and valiant in combat. They are chosen from the ranks of the standard military and placed into this similar yet distinct group, which is dedicated to expertly guarding the lives of the Duchy’s noble family.

 

Prime
The commander and coordinator of the elite unit of the order, the Prime has jurisdiction over the entirety of the High Guard. He observes and trains with the standard military as comrades and brothers, constantly looking for promising new blood to add to the ranks of the high guard. Conferring with the Marshal and Commander, he keeps the distinct entities working as closely as possible.

 

Sentinel
A hand picked member of the house guard, Sentinels are soldiers of the Vydrian Order whose valiance, determination, and martial prowess goes above and beyond normal expectations. They serve as personal guards to house Vanir and are selected from the ranks by the Prime, who consults the Marshal before making his decision.

 

 

Command

 

Vangard

The position of Vangard commands both respect and obedience. They are steadfast leaders who are expected to inspire and drive the soldiers they lead. Duties of the Vangard can include coordinating training, assigning guard duty, and ensuring other officers are not abusing their power or straying from the tenets of the Order. It is not uncommon, however, for the Vangard to be put in charge of a specific operation, usually logistical in nature. They are also advisors to the Marshal.

 

Lieutenant

The Lieutenant is an officer who has proven that they can excel in a leadership role, and are able to command a detachment of soldiers. The Lieutenant constantly seek to prove their devotion to the Order, and often does so by fulfilling roles as quartermasters, instructors, or disciplinarians.

 

Decurion
The Decurion is a weathered veteran of the Order who exhibits an innate ability to strengthen the resolve of those around them. Decurions are soldiers who will not falter, and can always be found pushing Order members to new heights. They often pass on their wealth of knowledge to the enlisted they lead.

 

 

Enlisted

 

Man-At-Arms

The man-at-arms is no stranger to battle. These weathered veterans are expected to hold the line without fail, their ferocity and determination making them formidable opponents. Nothing less than complete obedience is expected of the man-at-arms. They have been tested time and time again, and are trusted fully in keeping His Majesty’s peace.

 

Footman
These soldiers are the backbone of the Order. They are fully fledged soldiers that have had some experience in the military, and their presence is both a relief to their allies and a curse to their foes.

 

Draftee
These men are the newest additions to the Order. Most are lacking experience in any form of combat, and have yet to prove themselves. They will undergo trials and training until they can become Footmen.

 

 

Specialized Ranks

Quartermaster
There are many soldiers who find comfort in prayers and mantras. The phrase ‘An army marches on its stomach’ is the mantra of all quartermasters. The Quartermaster oversees the flow of materiel within the Vydrian Order and is responsible for the maintenance of all its military supplies. Gifted with an affinity for organization, the Quartermaster keeps records, as well as a watchful eye, on the arms, munitions, and other essentials of the Order. Only officers can serve as Quartermasters.

 

Paymaster
The Paymaster, as implied in the name, distributes the soldiers’ wages; however, his duties include more than just handing out coin. The Paymaster is also expected to oversee the Order’s quota system, and should work with the Quartermaster to assess the Order’s intake of wealth. The Paymaster often has an almost dwarven knack for accumulating and measuring wealth, though without the wanton greed. Only officers can serve as Paymasters.

 

Disciplinarian
The Disciplinarian is entrusted with regulating the men of the Order. To ensure that the enlisted are kept in line, the Disciplinarian must be a man with a firm hand and an iron will. A soldier with cruel or fiendish tendencies will never be chosen for this position; the Disciplinarian is supposed to mete out punishments because it is his duty, not because it pleases him to bring pain to his brothers. They are often expected to share a stern yet loving relationship with their fellows, though they must not be hesitant in enforcing the tenets of the Order or the instructions of the officers. Disciplinarians can come either from the officer corps or the ranks of the enlisted.

 

NOTE: Disciplinarians cannot issue lashings or other forms of punishment to an officer; that is a task that falls to the Marshal himself.

 

Chaplain
The Chaplain is appointed to attend to the spiritual needs of the Order. Often seen administering words of encouragement or sermons to the troops before battle, the Chaplain is no stranger to combat. The Chaplain leads devotions and prayer within the Order, and often works closely with other members of the Holy Clergy to administer rites and maintain holy relics. It is also the job of the Chaplain to instill the beliefs and values of the Order in his brothers.

Octavianus stood atop a small hill, surveying the land before him. He could see from the mouth of the river to the thick and untamed forests, beyond which the uncharted north lay. But the marshal's thoughts were interrupted by an anxious courier, who stood shivering in the morning chill. Octavianus took the letter presented to him and unraveled it. A smile creased his hard features and he returned home, to begin penning a response immediately.

Octavianus Bracchus wiped the sweat from his brow as he stood back from his work, his eyes drinking in the progress that had been made. Scaffolding clung precariously to several large towers, which were connected by a thick gatehouse. Snug against the mountain and built from the heavy stone indigenous to Vanaheim, the fort would serve well as the permanent home for the Order.

 

Octavianus had his thoughts interrupted by the sound of someone clearing their throat. He turned to recognize his courier, who bowed before offering him the papers of the day. News from the Capital, inventory checks and building statements, all quite usual... except for two of the messages. Made from a different parchment, they quickly caught the Marshal's eye. He opened and read through each one individually, and once he returned to the camp he quickly penned a response.

 

You are hereby accepted into the Vydrian Order. Please make your way to our encampment, which lies North of Port Vydrik along the riverbank. If you arrive and find no tents, then we have likely already moved into our new home; the fort at the foot of the mountain.
