  The Duke’s Guard

‘Thump’. That is the repeated sound coming from Dunwych Hold every morning. Before the sun has fully appeared on the horizon, before the snow starts to fall, two males are training. One tall, muscular, the armor of the Vigil and his wolf shaped helm giving him an intimidating look. The other short, slim, wearing clothes fit for a noble under training. “Take a break.” says  Thorburn ‘the Wolf’ Alexander in a toneless voice, his hands behind his back. The small child pants, dropping his wooden rapier next to a training post. He rushes to his teacher.  “Mister Thor?.” The child asks. “Yes Lord Alexander?” “ Why do you train me?” Thor kneels down to his level “His Grace has given me the honor to protect the Ducal family with my dying breath. You learning how to fight means I help to protect you.” “Can you tell me what more it means to be a Duke’s Guard?” Thor simply ruffles the boy’s hair “That is a story for another time. Now back to training.”  he says rising and crossing his arms. Alexander Staunton nods with a small smile, rushing to get his blade.

A man sitting on the roof of the keep looks at the two with a small smile on his face. Inspiration flooding his mind, he picks up his book and quill, and starts writing.

‘What is a Duke’s Guard? Just what does this position imply? Is it a privilege? Is it a promotion? No, it is more than that. Much more than that. It is a call. A call to serve, a call to protect. It is such a difficult task, that only three members of the Eagle’s Vigil are allowed to hold this position. To carry the burden of focusing all your efforts in protecting your Duke and his family with your life. All three of the members have taken a celibacy vow, forbidding themselves of getting married or having a relationship. They are the personification  of sacrifice in the Vigil.

Members of the Duke’s Guard are the elite in the Vigil. To even be considered to become a member, you must have survived many wars, and your skills must shine through among all other candidates. By committing themselves to intense training programs which require them to constantly put their life on the line, they are able to forge an unbreakable will. On top of that, you must be a perfect example of loyalty, discipline, bravery, wisdom and cooperation. They must aquire the combat prowess to master a wide variety of weapons and unarmed combat. They also require to be well-educated on field medicine. They are expected to have the cunningness needed to learn how to survive and fight with anything they can muster. Finally, they are demanded to learn the empire's laws by heart and have proper manners since they will be accompanying their lord everywhere.

In short, a Duke’s guard is one of the most skillful warriors in the Northern core. Serving the Duke with unwavering loyalty, going against armies without a sign of indecision and facing death himself without hesitation. For your honorable cause, I salute you.’

The man sighs in content. Before closing his book, he signs with his name on the bottom of the page.

"Thinking about vassalizing under Courland tbh.  They seem strong."  Says Hakon under his breath.

Overlooking the Duke's guard and his son, Richard Staunton does not hear the petty complaints and whines of the Norlandic pagans. He smiles, a guard standing rigidly at his back, as the Duke enjoys the comfort of his friends and family.
