Before you Commision

NOW TO THE MAIN TOPIC

Before you commission you need to do a lot of thinking.

STEP 1.  LOOK AT THE ARTISTS WORK

Thats right, go to their page, their deviantart, their Imgur, their Thread, anything.  And LOOK.  Don't just look at one piece of their work.

f8d7947d5a0eb3d0a3d99f204d3843ca.png

This for example is DESIRES thread, great artwork here!  But If you go into this thread, and don't read first.  Then you're in for a sore realization.  You always want to un spoiler to make sure they meet your style!

STEP 2:  CHECK PRICES

A lot of artists on deviantart will have journals, or pictures, this will tell you what their prices are.  An example is below from NUMMY.

Price List by Amaryia

Notice she makes it very clear what her prices are, don't try to haggle these.  Unless they state they can be haggled, don't do it, its EXTREMELY disrespectful.

REMEBER, YOU'RE PAYING FOR TIME

Now I know, you're going to say, "Some artists cost to much."  Have you seen their quality?  Do you know how much just small things go for on other places?  I've seen a picture like Desi's chibi go for over 50 dollars as an adoptable.  Or Nummys?  Those can go for over 100 dollars!  You're paying for TIME.  Be glad you're not paying for the hours like you would a clerk, or a person in the services, like a technician.  Some artists take over 2 DAYS to complete a piece.  Where others take just two hours.  These are put into prices.

Lets say Artist A spends 15 hours on your piece, with them only valuing their time at 8 dollars an hour.  That's 120 dollars.  But instead they may charge you 30 dollars.  Remember, you're paying for time.  Be glad you're not paying an hourly wage.

But what if the arts free?  Then don't complain and be grateful that they even did it for you.

STEP 3:  LOOK AT WHAT THEY DO.

Some artists only do animals, someone do gore, some do other things, make sure that you're requesting something in their comfort level.  Don't take a suit of armor to someone that only knows how to do dresses and demand them, and then throw a fit when they can't do it properly.

STEP 4:  PAYMENTS

Some artists charge before, some charge after a sketch is made, some charge after the product, some charge in game and some are just free.  Make sure you can honestly pay whats requested first before you actually try anything.  There's nothing worse than an angry artist because you said you'd pay them, and never did.  Of course, if you use paypal, send as a goods or services.  If they don't give you the product, you can get your money back.  This is the way to protect you both.

STEP 5:  ORDER

If you've actually gone through all my steps, and you're ready to place an order, do so!

Well said. I know that artists pay a lot of time in their art, so you pay what you get. That's why I have a childhood artist that does it for me for free xxddddddddddddddddd

all art , regardless of quality deserves to be payed for. If you think someone elses art isnt worth any actual money, then you sir / madam are an actual prick.

Beautiful philosophy and all, but I doubt you'd find it difficult to say that if I started charging money for my Paint scribbles. Some art just isn't good.

It depends on the person if they're actually going to comission anway so whats wrong with asking for money if they want art.

This seems fairly odd, I'm uncertain that this needs a sticky.

Each artist has their own preferences and I've heard very little about "bad commissions". This seems more of an insight into some of the drawing process than anything a buyer needs to know before they make a purchase, those who make purchases are free to do so and artists are free to deny requests.

Some people have been complaining about the prices of art, or how the style of the artist doesn't match fully.

A few artist's feelings have been hurt.  So I wanted to make it thoroughly clear how to actually do this process.

I'm also uncertain that this needs a sticky. But, "bad commissions" are a very real thing, some people don't understand the no haggling thing, and that my style won't mesh with what they want. I have had explaining this devolve into borderline harassment from the would be client. So it's nice someone's saying something.

Points taken, but this post still seems odd to sticky.

Asking it to be stickied was just that, asking.  It doesn't need to be <3

Oh man, the day I start using a tablet to draw will be one heck of journey, I've become too comfy with Paint, that I can't use another program.
