Before you Commision

Holy damn those prices are high for a drawing of a minecraft roleplaying character.

The fact that it's of a Minecraft character isn't what makes it expensive, it's the overwhelming amount of time that goes into creating art, getting good at creating art, and the general money it costs to buy art supplies.

I have a friend who spends weeks on fantasy character headshots that are coloured and created in extreme detail; the idea that she might sell her art for anything less than what it's worth is awful. One full body piece took her at least fourty hours of actual work and perhaps ten of planning. Even at less than minimum wage, that's 350 dollars lost in opportunity costs.

I'm paying what I'm willing to pay. I'm really not going to pay an hourly wage unless I am actually buying the rights to the art to somehow make money off of it, like for a video game. Another thing that drives down the prices is that the artist can do work at their leisure while employment compels people to work consistently nearly all the time. But people can charge and people can offer whatever amount they want. I'm not doing hard labor for ten hours to pay someone else to sit in their home and draw. However, those prices shown are not unreasonable.

So yeah, it's a side hustle that I'd not expect a great sum for. I think the best way to make decent money for one's work is find someone that is self-employed with a project. If anyone is going to profit from your work then hell yeah get that hourly wage.

That said, unless you are charging a hundred of dollars, people shouldn't be dicks about your work. I had a commission that I wasn't entirely happy with, but I paid like ten dollars lol. It's petty to complain unless the quality is nothing like what was advertised. If I paid two hundred dollars, that **** better be perfect.

I didn't realize the style thing was a big deal. I believe you know who you are but I posted a status asking for some artwork a few months back. Someone messaged me linked me their deviantart. I looked it over for a bit there prices were really good I just personally myself wasn't a fan of the style though I told them their work was really well done and all that just that I personally wasn't a fan. Anyway to conclude me rambling I didn't realize this was something that was annoying/hurt people's feelings I would've gotten over it cause the work was good and the prices were as well. So I'd like to apologize for that.

Messaging different known artists on Lotc, or Deviant Art is one of the best places to look around for a wider variety of artists to get commissions from. In fact most of them do have a Deviant Art that you could note.
