The Hei-Zhu Customs

The Zhu in Hei-Zhu translates to Tribe. The Hei-Zhu got this name, because of their tendency to stay together and be a minority group of the Hou-Zi in general. The Hei-Zhu, because of their size tend to eat exactly their weight or more than their weight a day. Meaning they are in constant need of food, this causes them to hunt bigger prey. But this by all means does not mean the Hei-Zhu are not any less intelligent than their Hou-Zi brethren. Hei-Zhu are also quite fast, due to the muscles in their legs. Some are even able to run up to 14 miles an hour in their prime.

Brandings

The Hei-Zhu are branded with a symbol from a Pantheon of 8. This is decided by their emotions, and are branded when they reach adulthood. To earn their branding a person must prove, in front of a group of elder Hei-Zhu, that they have mastered their chosen emotion. Once they have done this they must go into the jungle and survive for a month and bring home a trophy from the greatest hunt they killed during that tenure. Once they bring home that trophy they will present it to the elders who will mark their totem into the trophy and then publicly brand the Hei-Zhu who is attempting to achieve adulthood. It is unspoken but typically expected that the branded person would not make any noise during their branding and afterwards would thank their fellow Hei-Zhu.

Anger- Bear

Friendship- Turtle

Fear- Sheep

Hope- Bird

Kindness- Horse

Envy- Boar

Love- Sloth

Loyalty- Wolf

Leadership Tier List

Tóumù: Meaning “Chieftain” the Tóumù is in charge of the wellbeing of all Hei-Zhu and their reputation among all Hou-Zi and all peoples. This leader should be a symbol of strength and wisdom and if there is a question of if they are fit for their position or if they are doing a well enough job the Míngzhì de lǎo will communicate and if needed denounce and release the Tóumù from their position.

Míngzhì de lǎo: Is a group of 3 to 7 well respected Hei-Zhu who overwatch people’s brandings of adulthood and the performance of the Tóumù. Members of this elite council serve this position for their entire life and can only be removed from the council by a unanimous decision. They are not allowed to leave by their own choice, if they neglect their duties in an attempt to be removed from the council they will be banished from the Hei-Zhu clan and potentially the entirety of  Hei-Zhu.

Bāhén: Is the general bulk of the Hei-Zhu population. These are adult Hei-Zhu who are fit for combat and are often seen doing manual labor, eating or engaging in rigorous strength training.

Háizi: All Hei-Zhu who have not gone through the process of becoming an adult are a Háizi. They are often either being nurtured by their mothers or helping anybody of a higher social status. They are not very well respected and adults are often very strict because they recognize that the children will grow up to be the next generation of Hei-Zhu who will be expected to keep the culture close to their their hearts.

Jìnyòng: All Hei-Zhu who are unable to hunt and are deemed unfit for combat would be labeled as a Jìnyòng. These people are not very well respected but are still given important tasks such as building, sewing, cooking, storing, writing and the arts. They are given a single scar under their branding they received when they became an adult so that all would be able to recognize them.

Diet

The Hei-Zhu are not known for their incredible craftsmanship and making incredible food is not one of their greatest talents. They often cook meats over a fire or any other foods in a pot over a flame. Their foods are pretty crude but often hearty and more focused on the consumer's health rather than taste. Though wealthier Hei-Zhu often trade with other Hou-Zi for foods they are not skilled in making, like cakes or cookies or alcoholic brews.

Meats:

Small animals, such as rats, squirrels and rabbits that are easy to trap and snare. They also occasionally hunt large animals like elk and wild cats.

Fruits:

Bananas, Avocados, Oranges, Lemons, Pineapples and mangos.

Other:

Bread, Rice (w/ Soy Sauce), noodles.

Workout

The Hei-Zhu’s workout makes them strong and burly, for the top half at the most. This can hurt their movement, as they may need to move to all fours in order to walk. However, this is also a benefit. As returning to their primitive walking style feels natural and can even increase their movement speed. Because of the muscles in their legs they are able to run fast, the fastest being recorded at 14 miles an hour. They can walk on their hind legs but are considerably slower.

Traditions

Orphans:

Orphans are considered to be questions among the Hei-Zhu, whether they will sit among the group or try to make himself known. Orphans are often well observed and given much more guidance from the community of Hei-Zhu than normal Hei-Zhu who often have parents to guide and teach them.

Shòuliè de ài:

This is a pact between two Hei-Zhu who become one another’s Shòuliè de ài. The duo hunt together as a team and are able to bring back larger and more extravagant hauls. The pair should share a matching token around the bicep to indicate that they are not only a respected hunter but also that they have a Shòuliè de ài. A Hei-Zhu should respect and defend their Shòuliè de ài at all costs and only have one hunting partner. This bond is respected by all Hei-Zhu and one would be wary to make an enemy of a Hei-Zhu who wears a Shòuliè de ài token for they will surely have somebody to take their side on the matter.

Zhàndòu dǒupéng:

A traditional cape that is worn by members of the elite Míngzhì de lǎo. This cape is only to be worn during battle or when the group convenes. It would be disgraceful to wear this as an everyday garment because the position is not meant to be flaunted and bragged about.

Professions:

Hei-Zhu are not known to have nimble fingers for sewing or the patience for harvesting crops but are renown hunters who bring back meats and pelts, warriors who protect those who find their favor and they have even been known to find their way into mines and bring back stone, metal and jewels for their kind.

Celebrations:

Yearly Festival Cycle

Every year the Hei-Zhu hold an exclusive gathering deep in the jungle to celebrate a new cycle of seasons and dedicate a year towards a certain aspect of their life that they would like to focus on. Themes can range from strength to prosperity to courage and even acceptance.

Totems:

These places of worship and meditation are often works of art that Hei-Zhu create to venerate mindsets or ancestors. Hei-Zhu often leave sacrifices to show their commitment to an idea or ancestor. These Totems often take the shape of a part of the pantheon of animals in the Hei-Zhu traditional brandings.

The Zhu Píngbì

The traditional shield that is only worn by the Tóumù. Each new Tóumù will change the design of the shield when they are given their position. They will wear the shield at all times and the new design will be the symbol to represent the Hei-Zhu.

Rènmìng:

The tradition of choosing a new Tóumù where two respected Hei-Zhu will be let free into the woods to try to take an idol that the other must guard. Whoever returns to the village first with the other person’s idol will become the new Tóumù. The entirety of the Hei-Zhu will bring their new leader a gift and pledge their allegiance to him.

This lore has my endorsement, all the best cultures on LOTC have been built on by multiple people, so I encourage any other Hou-Zi players who want to follow the example of the writers of this piece.

I always found roleplaying as a monkey strange, but this is pretty good. It'd be shame to have something like this left out.
