THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDANCE, 1601

Issued and Confirmed by His Grace the Duke of Mardon Peter Sigismund, 9th of the Deep Cold, 1601

“Some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money, they can’t be bought, bullied, or negotiated with. Some men, some men just want to watch the world burn.”

His Grace, Peter Sigismund Horen, ushering the words of his late father, His Imperial Majesty, Philip Frederick.

History is destined to repeat itself, pondered the second son beside Charles as the duo peered over the grandiose lands of Mardon, the wretched stench of swamp brewing in the air before Peter’s attention was caught by the fierce, unorthodox tundra that was once the illustrious city of Johannesburg. He, who would be quaint with the idealism of a Kingdom war betwixt the Courlandic folk and the Hansetians of yore. Ripe with the ire of a thousand suns, the adolescent brought his clenched fist to his frame, scorning the Horenite snake Philip Louis of Marna, who damned his father’s soul and tarnished the Horenian lineage with deceit and trickery. A mistake, Peter Sigismund sought to amend. However, when in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another; Staunton has dishonoured the Ducal lands of Mardon, and with it, both its inhabitants and rightful heir.

These truths are self-evident, all men are created equally, we are all endowed by our Maker with certain beliefs and rights alike. To secure our rights, our disbelief in the lament of Tobias Staunton, and what he deems just to engage in war with the Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska. Had the Staunton and his agents appropriately investigated the situation, they would have discovered that the late Duke of Mardon’s death was established as suicide. He pleaded kinsman to slay him, rampant with guilt for his treason to his Nephew, Philip Frederick, and that they did with great reluctance. Diplomacy could have been sought, peace brought upon the war-stricken isle of Tahn, but instead we see Man opting to draw steel upon their brethren with little remorse to their ill-stricken ways.

The Duchy of Mardon seeks no immediate hatred toward the Household of Staunton and its holdings, we aspire for flourishment, where Man may live in peace. But we cannot do that beneath the blood-stained tabard of Tobias Staunton, and thereby extension we hereby declare our independence to both House Staunton and the Kingdom of Courland. By all means, we incite diplomatic relation, but we will no longer affiliate ourselves with Staunton as their vassal. Bad blood runs rampant, misdeeds we cannot forgive, for whom shalt kneel to the man who forced their father to their knees? I, Peter Sigismund, proudly pull whichever Marna to accompany me into the fold, to rid themselves of their ill-ridden namesake, to rightfully bear their truest name beneath the glory of our forefather: HOREN.

To you, Tobias Staunton, whichever it is you desire, your under-laying aspirations will be unveiled in this upcoming war. We, however, are truthful to the Canon Faith, and the Household of Horen. We are no threat to your flourishing Kingdom, nor will we tie in with Kingdom of Hanseti-Ruska. We have paid our dues.

You brought my Father to his knees and slit his throat with fire and iron.

You ran my kin from their homestead and when the Holy Oren Empire had learned their lesson, you sought to siege the city of Johannesburg, bringing the demise of many-a-man.

You incorporate alliances into a war between Kingdoms, bringing dishonour to Courland and Staunton alike, and with it, the Ducal lands of Mardon and their inhabitants.

For that, I cannot forgive. We will stand by our lonesome, to oversee the upcoming war, and we bid your kin no ill will.

My father may have been tyrannical, bringing the demise of Savoy, and the martyr Jon Renault, may he rest in peace within the Seven Skies. Will Man show his true colours once more, I ponder, Tobias Staunton. I praise Jon Renault as a saint and when I grow to adulthood, I truly aspire to be as grandiose as the late Duke of Savoy in namesake and honour alike, and to quote a man long since past:

“I kneel to no man.”

IN NOMINE DEI,

HIS GRACE PETER SIGISMUND, DUKE OF MARDON, FOREVER AUGUST,

BARON OF DARKWOOD AND CANTAL

"Traitors will be killed, enemies will be slain. Now we can actually kill the last Horens who brought plague upon the humans and corrupted the world. A coward who left the Empire in order to survive and asked for forgiveness and mercy from Basileus Tobias now betrays him in the time of need. He shall be crucified." Says Romanos

Somewhere out at sea, Alexander Sigismund HOREN kicks his feet up onto a stool as he lays back in his chair sipping away at his coconut milk.

"You and yours literally betrayed your entire race, getting Dwarves, Orcs and the likes to murder brothers and bring down a United Humanity and spit on the name of the greatest Dynasty that has ruled and will ever rule humanity as a whole. You cry about imagined tyranny and seek to impose your will upon those who would not have you." remarks a slightly irritated Knight

"A united Empire? More like a corrupted empire and a corrupted Dynasty. The common folk was not aware of your actions, the nobility that was aware however, managed to overthrow an entire Empire. You can cry as much as you wish, but as long as we stand we shall NEVER allow this corrupted Empire to be reformed, no matter the cost." Romanos would state

"Gungho!" Duke Sergei Kovachev would shout "Finally you see that Courland is a land full of small boys in the heads of grown men!"
