AD CARASCA GLORIA

THE LEGION

The Carsacan Legion is the principal army of the republic.  It stands to enforce law and order in the realm during peacetime.  During times of war, it acts as the armed forces of the republic, bringing death to its foes. The Legion serves as the pathway to citizenship in the Republic.  All members of society who complete their 5 year service are entitled to full Carascan citizenship. Legionnaires are expected to be loyal to the Republic, hardworking, and must contribute to the Legion through their various professions.  Re-enlisting after the 5 year tour is complete allows for the soldiers to progress to the highly respectable officer ranks and is recommended for those seeking a career in the military.  During times of war or crisis, a draft may be imposed among all citizens.

“The heart and soul of the Republic are the defenders of the People.”

-Legatus Tiberius Manilius, addressing a crowd of eager recruits.  4th of the Grand Harvest, 1605

CENTURIO - Centuriones are tasked with leading the Centuries of the Legion.  They are charged with the day-to-day oversight of their companies, ensuring that soldiers are well equipped, well trained, and well disciplined.

OPTIO - Optiones are junior officers that assist and enforce the Centurio’s commands, and keep order in his century. Essentially the Optio is the Centurio’s second in command, they are often handpicked by the centurio, and will become the Centurio, should the position become vacant.

INFANTRY:

DECANUS - The Decani are the the crème de la crème of the legion, being formed by the bravest, most disciplined soldiers who have decided to continue their career in the military. Decani are permitted to command lower ranking infantry, and often serve as an optio’s right hand man.

EVOCATUS - The Evocati are the veteran soldiers of the legion, having re-enlisted in the legion after receiving their discharge. They often serve as instructors to the fresh recruits and make up the elite infantry. Unlike the ordinary legionnaires, Evocati are exempt from menial labor tasks, such as fortifying the camps.

TRIARIUS - The Triarii are the experienced foot-soldiers who have survived the hardships of service in the army.  They make up the bulk of the Legion. These men are well rounded fighters and have an iron will, they are traditionally stationed in the back of the line, as the last line of defense.

MILES - The Milites are enlisted soldiers who have passed the basic training needed to be a legitimate member of the Legion.  They perform the brute work of the legion, digging trenches, building bridges and forts for the legion.

TIRO - The Tirones are the newly enlisted men of the legion, who seek the opportunity to prove themselves to their superiors. These men are not considered to be full legionnaires until they complete their first year of service and will dedicate most of their time to learning the laws of the Republic, increasing their proficiency with weapons, and practicing drills with the rest of the legion.

Specialist Ranks -  Proven infantrymen may seek a better rank on their own accord or be granted a specialist rank. These ranks only garner the legionnaire more prestige and often more pay.

Signifier - The Signifier carries the Legion standard, Signifiers are often veteran legionaries. Signifiers additionally assume the responsibility for the financial administration of the Legion.

Immunes - Immunes are veteran soldiers who specialize in specific duties. These duties vary, but Immunes are often engineers, artillerymen, musicians, doctors, military police, drill and weapons instructors. Immunes are exempt from menial tasks, such as digging trenches. BILLETS - Women have the opportunity in the legion to work in various billet positions where they serve as cooks, animal caretakers, and other non combatant roles.

PROMOTIONS

“I refuse to bury any man who dies with a clean sword.”

-Centurion Aulus Hercinius, addressing a group of soldiers going into battle for the first time.

Legionnaires are promoted based on a mark system:

Note: Any promotions beyond Infantry ranks are decided at the discretion of the Legion High Command.

Decanus - Requires 35 marks and being a Decanus.

Evocatus - Requires 20 marks and re-enlistment after 5 year tour is complete.

Triarius & Marine - Requires 10 marks

Miles - Requires 5 marks and one year of service.

Tiro - New Recruit.

Marks are granted for doing various tasks in the legion as well as attending to basic duties. They are granted at an officer’s discretion, ranked Centurion or higher for anything that a soldier does above and beyond. Collecting wood, iron, and other such raw resources entitles marks. Attending trainings, tending the gate, training other recruits and other such tasks are often awarded with marks.

The Navy of Carasca is the wooden wall between the the Republic and its enemies.  It serves as the first line of defence between any people who dare to invade the island of Carasca.  As being part of the legion hierarchy, all recruits serving their 5 year term or career must spend one of their 5 years serving in the navy.  At times of the peace, the navy spends most of its time warding off any pirates in the North Seas and conducting drills to maintain its sharp edge.
