Villain RP is a large part of Lotc and it's something on the GM Team that we want to make sure is balanced, fair and fun! Recently over the past few months the state of villain roleplay has been declining slightly; lockpicks are now very scarce and heists are now on a hold. Over the next few weeks we'll be working to fix this and bring back villain roleplay into a flourished state. However we want some input from you guys before we start to make any solid changes to it, so there's a poll at the top of this post and also some questions below that would be helpful if you answered. The poll is simply to collect numbers and the questions below allow you to explain in more detail, they're very broad questions just so that I can get an idea of how the community feels about the current state of villain roleplay but nevertheless - answer away.

Do you like villain roleplay?

What's your favorite part about villain roleplay?

What's your least favorite part about villain roleplay?

Do lockpicks contribute to villain roleplay?

Are heists still a good concept?

What do you feel could be changed to make villain roleplay better?

As it stands, do people correctly RP villain roleplay?

Expect a few more of these to be put up in the following weeks which will discuss more in-depth discussions about villain roleplay, such as lockpicks or heists.

Thank you for the input!

I think the main reason the majority of people that said 'No', is because they don't want to lose.

They think winning is the only fun option, and that's what needs changing, not the villians.

Granted, there are, and will always be bad villian RPers, as there will always be good villian RPers.

As someone who wasn't there when we had villian applications, I cannot really comment on the matter, though a month trial couldn't hurt.

I wish people were able to role-play villains correctly, It's really not the Villain's fault, it's the fault of how rampant Meta-Game is on LoTC and has been for so long without any solution.

The problem is once again with villains, actually. Most villains don't offer the opportunity to change the outcome. Either gotta be so obvious who's gonna win so that there's no point in fighting back or you gotta make a run for it.

My problem with LotC's villains is that they RARELY have reasonable motivations. "Ooga booga I wanna ruin the world" "Ooga booga I wanna kill all the ___"

I think Villain RP is good as it stands but people need to crack down on meta and powergaming. On both sides of the RP, that is.

So heres my take on it

Villain RP when done correctly is great - I agree with FreeWud in that a lot of people vote "no" because they're afraid to lose - But that also sends a message in and of itself. People are afraid of Villain RP because they're afraid to lose because "Villain RP" is now synonymous with "PVP fight banditry/theivery". That's not great.

I've had some of my best RP ever with villains - but that's when RP is there to be had. Most recently it almost always ends in x_X u ded?? idk.

I also have some issues with heists and such but maybe I'm just bitter from when a lore team member stole a giant thanhium crystal from an underground section of the library and made off with it via boat EVEN THO THE LBIRARY WAS IN A FKCIN LAKE SJDAL

I also hate that some groups just like to target others for no real RP reason - Yea, I've seen those logs of you going "lol lets rob the library and steal their relics" bruh we display those relics and if you wanna use one for an event or research or whatever we're open to that idea, but no need to start shittalking just cause u jelly we collect. damn son we just gonna stop displaying them u gonna be like that.

idk man i have so many emotions and feelings i just wish there could be some better villainry and that the bulk of it wasnt bandits or spawned mostly from OOC feelings? idk.

I think the biggest issue with a lot of villian rp is that the villain (if he wins) almost always kills the victim, that doesn't allow for any rp to follow from it or character development. Personally, if I every take part in what would be described as villian rp I leave the victim alive unless it's 100% necessary for rp purposes.

With the general behaviors of the server, Group oriented conflict RP has been reduced to the minimalist approach. Folks defy logic and the environment in an effort to achieve an OOC End Goal instead of making the efforts to make RP enjoyable. With devices like the grappling hook / fishing rod, folks overcome most fortifications without RPing much of anything and without intent to contribute to the RP environment. Given the lack of enforceable PKs, there's no real risk to partaking in villainous activity and more often than not, folks won't PK on either side of the spectrum. Blacklists don't really punish folks too hard, as it just turns the person away for a duration of X days.

The general mentality has shifted to factions pvp, thus the intense shift in numbers for War Claims and raids. The server, in general, has grown lapse in regards to giving the community interesting matters to pursue and the RP environment is thin to the extent that it's almost tedious in place of entertaining.

1. Racist basturd.

2. I totally see where you're coming from, and I feel for you if you've had to interact with villians like that, though in my experience as a villian, I've experienced people of various natures.

Did the Villian application system work?

The outcome of defeat for a villain is almost invariably death too so...is this a villain thing?

Just cause it's an issue with other types of roleplay, which I agree it is, doesn't mean it's still not an issue with villain rp and should be addressed or hopefully taken onboard by some people reading this thread.

I get tired of the 'you villain play better than everyone else while we meta-game you, instantly kill ambush you, and kill you over and over agian.'

I don't get why you're arguing with me on this, this isn't relevant to my point at all. I'm saying victorious villains and people who defeat villains should both try and abstain from killing the player with minimal rp or at all if possible. To me that is a big issue with combat rp in general.

That was my point, it really isn't a problem with villain rp but an RP problem ya know? People like to only fix villain rp it seems. It is funnest to not die but not killing someone usually leads to me getting killed one, two, or three times.
