[Dominion 6.0 Dev] The two week mark

As a forenote, I would like to give another thanks to Senda for allowing me to totally not steal his dev format.

Additionally, this has been in the works for a few weeks now by a multitude of people, but the complexity of the build has kept much of tangible updates to a minimum until now.

So, without further delay...

Dominion 6.0 Development Update: Concepts, Progress, and Previews

Hello hello! Welcome to what may be the only update post regarding the Dominion build up until launch. There's a lot left to do! I tend not to make too many forum posts but I am Twilight, and I've been building for the elves in many shapes/states/forms for a while now. I've worked on Leumalin, Laenniel, Cerulin, the extension of Laurehlin in Vailor, and a few more in the past. I'm very excited to start revealing the work the team has been hard at work on.

The Team Involved:

Myself! Leading the group and building the trees and meat of the capital

GaiaLoTC - Ensuring all needs of the nation are met going into 6.0

Jow - Creator of the current wall, city entrance, and statues around the build

TheElfenLie - Touch ups, pathmaking, bridgebuilding

WarsongFarseer - Overseeing and planning the ports going to the dark elves

Combustionary - Overseeing and planning the highlands going to the mages/scholars

The Concepts:

So I didn't realize how many different kinds of RP happen in the Dominion until I started building. It's a lot! All of them are differrent but play a key role in making the place something a player can go to and have no trouble finding something they'd be interested in.

Trouble is, right now, we're far too spread out to accomplish a bulk of people sticking around.

So with the size of the plot, the capital design is intended to act as a fusion of the three main branches of the Dominion and encourage inter-city roleplay and development.

Let me try and explain via the template used by the Renatus team...

The gold block in the center is the center of the city with a fountain, as well. Forgot that bit while editing...

So at first glance, this might end up looking like a building style disaster about to happen. Fortunately, the concepts we've been using have facilitated a very subtle flavor change between districts.

The three said styles have been based off of the depictions of elven settlements from the acclaimed Jackon's Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

For the wood elves, the woven bridges and trees of Lothlorien.

For the dark elves and ports, Greyhavens.

Lastly, for our scholars, Rivendell on the highlands.

The reasons for the shift from the current style to these is not only to allow a better meshing of the populaces, but to also build something that is very distinctly elven and give a more collective group feel to the branches of the Dominion. It is also consolidating the groups, preventing the decline seen by the distance between them.

There is space for the druids as well, marked on the map. They are actually quite separate from the Highlands which would have caused issues, but actually more connected to the wood elves as their space is a grotto leading into the cliff-side. This area was heavily inspired by the surreal foliage of Cameron's Avatar film, and is entirely free of torches/flame to make way for bioluminescence.\

City Plan

With the space provided and following the concepts, we've made housing flexible and varied. The hanging homes in the trees are stacked in a way that doesn't limit space to 3x3. They are also quite close to other housing and usually situated in some form of nature aspect/ park. This is true for all districts. Additionally, there is space for the wood elven seeds to make their own manors, as well as the dark elves, and buildings large enough for guilds in the highlands and in the forest.

The backside of the city is where a cliff meets the ocean, so we are able to get away with a singular wall facing the south gate towards the main road. This will hopefully allow the other districts to keep their gates open more frequently and encourage movement between places, and keep the interference with the forest inside to a minimum.

There's only two weeks left and we're working quite hard, but I will leave a few screens of what has been done until map launch. If time permits, updates will come in the future. Please pardon any wool/floating objects you may see.

As a final thought, we've been toying with changing the tree color of the wood elven district to acacia. Leave me your opinion!

considering how linandria turned out, im a bit cynical about how this new city will turn out under your architectural direction, but at least dark elves and wood elves are living together

I can already imagine dire wolves knocking people off of those tree to tree bridges

Totally welcome.. hey wait a minute!

Looks intruiging - are the yellow and blue sections also housing?

Also - the black section (Barracks) seems quite large compare to the space reserved for housing. Is that intentional (or just a perspective thing that I am not seeing right) and if so, what is the story behind it - is it going to be a MEGA barracks or a building that combines other functions besides the barracks?

If you look there is screenshots of some the building done. I personally think the layout and such is overall much better than Linandria. Plenty of space too and not just a small circle.

While I cannot truly speak for whatever is on Twilight's mind regarding the matter, I still can give my thoughts. And really, I think what it is is just a combination of those things you have listed.

Hah, I can see what you mean and I'll clarify. Yes and no, a bit of everything? So the actual barracks are around/on/in this centeral elder tree and most if not all of its RP functionality is on the bottom 1/3, at the base. The black kinda mushrooms over that amount is because the 'extra stuff' is in the canopy above. That's reserved purely for connecting hanging pathways to the wall/important buildings like the council chambers for ease of access for the guard but also just providing a playground for people to beat each other with pixel sticks to death.

Blue is commerce, this time we're opting for a low number of walk-in RP shops that players can manage themselves, like a... 5x5 floorspace with a service counter I believe.

Yellow is housing, right now it is clustered in those two spots and kind of weaves through the front of the city.

Moved to The Great Library. It shall be sorted into the appropriate category shortly.
