- Ents of Dunshire -

The Old Dunshire Forest is restless. That is because the trees are alive. Or rather, the Ents are. But to a traveller wandering through the Old Dunshire Forest things seem strange. He may look at a tree and see two green eyes glowing back at him, he blinks and then they are gone. He trembles at night as the low, creaking groans of the Ents communicate in their Entish language, but he convinces himself they aren't real. Out of the corner of his eye he catches a glimpse of a tree moving, but as he snaps around to look, all that marked his sighting is the quickening of his own heavy breathing.

The Ents, I have discovered, are the gardeners of Atlas. Though in recent ages they have grown weary of the world and its bloodthirsty inhabitants who don't care for nature. As such, they now only roam the Old Dunshire Forest. This shared love of nature is why they have become such good friends with Halflings. While the presence of a man, dwarf, orc, or elf in the Old Dunshire Forest would cause the Ents to recede and blend into the forest, they will reach out to all Halflings and together they look after the natural world. There are several notable Ents known to the world of Atlas:

Figdrasil

The chief guardian of the Old Dunshire Forest, though the Entish language doesn't have a word for titles I am told. As the most senior of all Ents, he presides over the Ent Moot, a time and place where all Ents gather to slowly debate the issues threatening the natural world, and the Old Dunshire Forest specifically.

Oakbeard

Oakbeard is a senior Ent, though he is more prone to roaming than Figdrasil. He is notable for having an extremely long beard, but also for his role in patrolling the outer bounds of the Old Dunshire Forest. He has therefore been sighted with greater frequency than other, more reclusive Ents, which often means an increase in unruly travellers being sent to the temple monks.

Segovax

An Ent in his adolescence, Segovax was the first to befriend himself to Hobbs Burrows, groundskeeper of the Old Dunshire Forest, and the Halfling race at large. By doing this, Segovax was able to secure the bonds of friendship between Halflings and all Ent kind. With the help of Segovax, Hobbs Burrows was able to learn more about the Ents of the forest.

Alderoot

Just an Entling, Alderoot is the youngest of all Ents currently living in the Old Dunshire Forest. To the disapproval of many of the senior Ents, Alderoot is careless with revealing himself to travellers coming through the forest. He mischievously plays pranks on them, spooking them into a great fearfulness. One Dwarf who loudly stomped through the forest was once hit by Alderoot's branches and flew all the way to the wizard's tower, though he is still just a young Entling.

Sefirot

Sefirot is an evil, cruel Ent. Though he is unique as he does not live in the Old Dunshire Forest with the other Ents, but lives in the village of Dunshire itself. Hobbs Burrows learnt from Segovax that he was so rotten to the core he could no longer stand like normal Ents, and has therefore burrowed his twisted roots deep into the ground next to Lake Dunshire. The local Halflings know Sefirot as 'Old Gaffer', and Halflings swimming too close have been known to become grabbed and entangled by his roots.

That is my account of the current known Ents of Atlas. To aid in my research of these grand and mysterious creatures, I am reaching out to all who are interested. Please visit this noticeboard pictured with the enclosed painting. The location is east of the Whispering Crossroads, and next to the unmissable Ent Moot grounds.
