“To Mister Godfrey Pertinaxi,

I begin this correspondence with no pleasantries in mind, nor do I speak without my most profound convictions. As such, I proceed to the circumstances in answering with great candor and nothing short of the objective truth in addressing the so-called “Response to the Josephites” with which you present your discourse. Evident in your remarks demonstrates a judgment lacking with the insight to understand that the Pertinaxi line is no more, without mandate, and without vindication from those whom you lay claim unjust dominion.

My people hold a self-evident truth and a right to cultivate self-determination, a innate core of human conscience and one that has been inhibited by the name and authority you claim to be your own. The Nenzing Proclamation, as you mischaracterize as “honeyed words and commanding decrees” represents far more of an inconvenient truth that you and your kin refuse to face. The characterization of what you deem “petty grievances” is in truth the culmination of the egregious actions of a regime that lacks the accountability and the responsibility to steward the unity of Man. Surely, grievances they are, but they are the vassals and communities in whose name you have been entrusted to justly and fairly govern. All men are born with the conscience that GOD himself rightly gives, to discern the right. The vassal-states seek to exercise this intrinsic right, seeking to usher in the order and human unity that they justly deserve. Surely an upright man, sane and rational can even see that he has lost his authority when those who shoulder his burden no longer see it fit to remain.

Is it a crime to seek greater justice? Is it not our right to do so? The Nenzing Proclamation promises these intrinsic rights to all men, pledging to uphold these values:

  • THE RIGHT TO LIFE, so no man will ever be taken to the Skies so soon.

  • THE RIGHT TO LIBERTY, so no man will ever be bonded by the shackles of slavery.

  • THE RIGHT TO TRIAL, so no man will ever be wrongly accused when not charged by a trial of their peers.

How could any leader of men deny their subjects as such?

You dishonor the dead and the names who bore their livelihood in as denizens of Humanity. You reduce them and threaten to bear down your levies to murder those who dare to speak for self-determination and liberty. This is a reflection of how you truly regard your subjects. My people have been branded as treacherous men and women by your very words, yet they breakers of oaths that no longer exist. The Pertinaxi Dynasty is over. The last of its name ended with Antonius, whose last act of Imperial Decree was to relieve the bondings of allegiance and fealty from the vassals who swore to the aforementioned. Whilst in that respect, you, Mr Godfrey Pertinaxi, have no more claim to such a lofty ambition. Your authority has been rendered invalid by the very hand of your kin, your holdings without meaning nor backing.

To speak to my claim as false is indeed a falsehood unto itself. The Johannian line that rested with the boy-Emperor John VI was unjustly and malicious terminated by the hand of the Aurelian pretender who sought to arrogate the throne for himself. The Renatian regime is built upon this avarice, beginning a line that represents the vices against Exalted Horen’s virtues. The practices of kinslaying, the denial of human rights, the oppression of men, and the sacrilege against the Holy Church has warranted for the times and the people to know that Pertinaxi line is truly without mandate.

Never once have we attacked the Holy Church in such a way that you have sought to undermine the institutions of the Exalted. Rather than atone and seek the true mercy of the Lord. The Divine Will is made evident in this cause. The lamentations of the pretender Pertinaxi attest to the truth that the Seven Skies has lost favor in the Renatian resolve to govern. We are all men, subject to the dominion of perpetuity and by the tenets of the Canon that guide these ends. Surely we see your regime is committed grave injuries to faith, and to that of GOD Himself whose judgment shall be levied in the days ahead.

If I am not mistaken, an Empire is one that rules over the vassal-states, one who carries the confidence of its subjects whoso bear their faith and allegiance to the same. You speak of the men who put me in this place, but it begins with the Will of GOD and the Mandate of the Exalted. It begins with the acknowledgment of the social contract, the respect for the Rule of Law, for the right to self-determine, and the admonition of the wicked.

You speak of Humanity, the people of Ves, the people of Curon, the people of Leuven, the people of Haense as all wicked schemers who would betray me. You deride them as bastardized nobility, as treasonous men who deserved their entire homes and lives to be displaced by fires of attrition. What does that say about you, how you perceive your subjects? You lay claim to Empire and yet you reduce your people are nothing more than conniving snakes.

You affirm the distaste and resentment that the people hold now.

We reiterate once more: THE PERTINAXI REIGN OF TERROR ENDS TODAY.

Yours sincerely,

Upon the day of our Lord GOD,

15th THE SUN’S SMILE 1715

Joseph I, Holy Orenian Emperor”

William opens up a ledger in Helena, squinting as he looks between it and the letter.

“John VI had no children, but he had brothers,” the bastard blinks, rubbing his eyes. “And His Imperial Highness, Prince Charles, does not seem to back this rebellion. Strange.”

Arthur scratches his forehead slightly, contemplating the delusion that exists within the Pertinaxi ranks. He remarks;

“Minor battles prior to the day of reckoning happen, they are never a reflection on what is meant to happen. Nonetheless, today our losses weight 8 men more than theirs yet they claim this as triumph. This is a testament to their lack of morale and weak will that they use this to delude themselves even further”

Arthur mutters a short prayer, praying for the sanity of the Pertinaxi to return.

Timothy rubs his tired eyes. "My mother used to say to me.. 'Do not mistake someone's kindness as weakness. I am kind to everyone, but when someone is unkind to me, weak is not what you are going to remember about me'. From that day forth, I was a good boy!"

Tim went back to sleep.

Waldemar Gotthold, holding his chalk, did GOD's work once again, highlighting the fabled letters and offering the processed letter to his superior.

"Sir!" He said, gesturing to the parchment with much excitement. "They are using more and more Ls. I think we are making firm progress."

“I wish to know who is ending this ‘reign of terror’, a landless man claiming to be an ‘Emperor’? I doubt it.”  Robert shrugs, throwing the missive into a bin.
