9th of The Grand Harvest, 1717

The harsh sun beat down on the bodies of the Renatian soldiers,

The troops had been led into the treacherous Haenseti lands, ordered on a patrol by the trio of commanders. The leadership for this raid included no less than two Renatian Knights, Ser Rodrik of the Imperial Order of the Red Dragon and Ser Gregor Thorne of the Pertinax Order. In addition, the nobleman Phillip Vimmark played an integral role in the command of the patrol. Whilst the main retinue held at the crossroads, Ser Rodrik approached ramparts of Haense, issuing a challenge to the Haenseti guards stationed nearby. Few accepted this challenge, but amongst those who did, none proved capable of defeating Ser Rodrik.

Whilst this distraction took place, a valiant elf known as Maly’thill investigated the so-called “impregnable” walls of the city. Eventually, his search proved fruitful, and he discovered a fatal gap in the Haenseti defenses. Maly’thill returned to the retinue with news of this entryway and plans were swiftly made to enter into the city through this route.

Imperial troops flooded into the city, scouring the streets for any signs of the knights they had previously spotted on the walls. And yet they found the city a veritable ghost town. Perhaps the faith in their walls had led to the city guards becoming lax and unprepared. It would prove to be their downfall. With the city defenseless, the troops of the Imperium swept through without opposition, eventually coming across a group of soldiers training. These soldiers were being instructed by none other than the traitor Otto Kortrevich, alongside Ser Rodrik’s wife observing the training. Although sloppy and unprepared, the soldiers did not surrender their arms upon being presented with a superior force. Instead, they were cut down by the Pertinaxi war machine, like so many before them.

Otto was bested in combat by Ser Rodrik and Sarah Kortrevich was successfully captured. The prisoners were soon bound and escorted towards Renatus, with Otto being forced to open his own gates, to prevent the method of entry from becoming known to the Haenseti. The patrol leads the prisoners off the beaten path, to avoid any rescue attempts from the traitorous forces that no doubt lurked amidst the roads.

Upon reaching Helena, the prisoners were escorted to the prisons, where Sarah was shown that her children had remained safe under the care of Ser Gregor Thorne. Lilliana Kortrevich was allowed to hand the children off to Sarah, with an offer being extended by Ser Gregor. She would join Lilliana and swear fealty to Godfrey III, of House Horen. She was allowed to consider this offer for a while, as Ser Rodrik dealt with the decrepit marshal of Haense. A similar offer was presented to Otto, but he spat at the generous hands that offered him his life.

As such, Ser Rodrik requested that Ser Gregor retrieve the ancestral sword of the Kortrevich family “Kortrevich’s Vow”, the same sword that the two had retrieved on a previous raid a saint’s week prior. With a smile on his face, Ser Gregor hastily carried out his task. He placed it into the hands of Ser Rodrik, as the men escorted Otto outside- in front of the guillotine. The guillotine itself, although a known staple of executions in Helena, and a crowd favorite, was not suited to the task at hand. Instead, Ser Otto was to die by his family’s ancestral weapon. Ser Rodrik, ever the merciful, offered Otto one last chance at redemption, and a place alongside him. He once more spat upon the mercy being offered to him. He was swiftly dispatched thereafter.

Afterwards, the knights Ser Rodrik and Ser Gregor returned to the cells, finding Sarah weeping. Still unsure on the offer, she was taken by Ser Rodrik and Ser Gregor, and shown the manor they lived in and the life she could have with her children in Helena. She accepted the deal she was offered, glad for an opportunity to be reunited with her family. Or so it seemed.

However, it seemed the corruption of the Marnans had seeped too deep into her. She changed her mind, rejecting the offer. Ser Rodrik sighed and had his children escorted back to Lilliana’s care, as the men escorted Sarah out of the city. Upon reaching the gate, the mountainous form of Ser Gregor loomed over her. “Traitors,” he muttered under his breath reaching out towards her. She was promptly strangled to death, an example to all, what fate awaits those who turn their backs on the Empire they swore allegiance to.

”Only a fool would follow the false Emperor of Oren.” Ser Aldis Chase spoke to himself. “You did Renatus a favor once more, Ser Rodrik. Ave Godfrey, Ave Renatus.”

The Old Crow, Edward Barbanov, had his manservant escort him to church that evening, though once they reached the threshold the Old Crow insisted on walking the aisle himself. It was empty at this hour, with most folk sitting for their evening meal or, if they had the misfortune of being young and strong, off warring in the field.

The tap of his cane echoed through the church as he made his way slowly through the altar, above which the golden light of the siting sun streamed into the hall through stained-glass windows. Relief flooded his old bones as he unceremoniously dropped to one knee before the altar, and clasped his hands together.

“Didn’t know either of you, Sarah and Otto Kortrevich,” he muttered under his breath as he watched the sunlight gleam on the surface of the altar’s golden cross, “and truth be told, I didn’t much care for you.”

“But you lived and died with honour,” he went on, unsure whether he was really praying for Otto’s soul or simply thinking aloud.

“And that’s more than this traitor Rodrik could ever hope for.”

reads of this news, shaking his head. The New Knight took out his dagger and punctured through the wood of his desk, “I cannot believe my brother almost made me a squire under this pathetic excuse for a Knight. Your heart is mine, ‘Ser’ Rodrik Kortrevich.” he would mutter to himself, a look of disgust crossed his face. ”Traitor to ye family and a traitor to our Nation!”

Lily would seem confused as she watched Phillip Vimmark lead a Haense patrol mere elven hours after this execution.
