HOUSE BARCLAY

“Wer rastet, der rostet.”

One of the few remaining Waldenian houses of the realm: House Barclay is a relatively new line to the Haensei peerage, standing proudly as the military family of the Kingdom. Although trouble has not spared their history, their adaptability and sheer persistence have continuously realized their survival and prosperity.

Baron of Freising, Marschall of Hanseti-Ruska

Being the first to establish Barclay as a house, Wilheim was accompanied by his brothers Anton- and Reinhard Barclay. ‘The three brothers’ essentially expanded the house with each a line of their own, expanding Freising to a noteworthy fortification and establishing far reaching ties, in marriage and in diplomacy, with other houses across Oren.

Reinhard established a cadet-branch with Natalya Ruthern known as House Markanz. Ongoing issues with House Kortrevich and its unpopular Lord-Palatine brought House Barclay to the fringes of Haenseni society, although it didn’t render them replaceable.

Patriarch Erwin Barclay

Count of Reinmar, Marschall of Hanseti-Ruska

Firstborn of Wilheim Barclay, Erwin’s steady hand and extensive politics greatly contributed to the re-integration of House Barclay into the society of Hanseti-Ruska. Resolving their ongoing disputes with House Kortrevich, constructing a powerful political alliance known as ‘The Feudalists’ in the Duma and seeking allies abroad.

House Barclay became a force to be reckoned with within the Kingdom, leading to both admiration and spite inland and outwards. Erwin as incumbent is marked as remarkably more calm, and many in the house see it as a proper continuation of Wilheim Barclays will: to consolidate the House as an integral part of Haenseni society.

ETYMOLOGY

Despite Barclay not sounding as a Waldenian name, it technically is: for it stems as an adopted word from the Waldenian linguistic predecessor known as Reinmarisch. Barclay is the combination of Bark, the word for charge and Lei, the word for steed. Barklei became the Reinmarian way of describing the cavalrymen of the tribes above the Tova river: alleging that House Barclay, or the ancestors they stemmed from, have a long standing equestrian tradition. Although no known Barclays precede the first generation of Wilheim.

CULTURE

House Barclay is distinctly Waldenian, although they identify as Hansetian. Respecting the legacy of Hochmeister Mirtok, his Teutons but also their impact on what now became Hanseti-Ruska: they wish to restore the Hanseti identity beyond their family lineage.

They are properly integrated in Haenseni culture and adhere to the New Marian ways when it comes to marriage, social hierarchy and faith: although they have an uniquely democratic way of governance as a House. They elect a new patriarch through moots, where the whole family gathers to discuss events or vote. They also invite the advice from all members of the House for important political matters or internal affairs.

POLITICS

In the latter part of the ‘Wilheim era’ of House Barclay, political participation increased tremendously. Various relatives ran for Alderman, Duma and the Senate: seeking to establish a more ‘Hanseti’ brand of politics instead of the Haenseni status quo.

They later became one of the chief architects of a prevalent political alliance between a large variety of houses, known as the Feudalists. Generally, the Feudalists sought to regain control of various Haenseni institutions from the royalty: believing it undermined their Jeremic liberties as people of Hanseti-Ruska.

In the generation of Erwin Barclay, the house adopted a distinct centrist albeit pro-Imperial line of politics. This has primarily to do with the fact that the Rubern War threatened their existence if it weren't for the Empire, and this increased communication between Barclay and the aristocratic houses of Helena. In the Imperial context: they identify as staunch Everardines, pro-Imperials and sympathizers to a strong Holy Canonist Church.

CONTINUED EQUESTRIAN TRADITION

Much like the Carnatians or the Savoyards, the Barclays seemingly inherited the ways of the steed. In their service as Landsers during the War of the Two Emperors: they had proven their cavalry excellence in every battle they were deployed.

After this war, the House kept an extensive breeding industry to provide to the Brotherhood of Saint Karl and the Hanseti-Ruskan state. Their brand of having quick steeds made them, aside from being a military force, a big commercial player as well. From this wealth, they purchased further land concessions and a villa in New Reza.

Portraits of Konstanz and Reinhard Barclay had collected dust in the hallways of the Reinmar keep since their passing: their painted cynical expressions watching a new generation mill about their day. Their former presence nearly forgotten in the bustling albeit troubled house, their legacy replaced by new blood boasting about new accomplishments. A Barclay would walk through the hallway as he notices something: for the first time in decades, the portraits of these men were dusted off. “Finally” he smiles, continuing to the throne room.

Manfred Karl Barclay read the publication, a wide smile on his face as he saw his families feats properly documented for all to see. He’d then put the piece of parchment down before taking out his own piece of parchment and quill, writing down his elaborate plans for the future of House Barclay.
