PREFACE

Ser Ulric Vyronov ‘The Unwavering’ (Common: Sir Ulrich Vyronov), was Knighted by Knight Paramount Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich under the reign of King Andrew III. Ser Ulric Vyronov was recognized as the Kingdom’s youngest to be knighted by the blade of Gaius Marius, achieving knighthood at the tender age of sixteen.

Prior to such elevation in joining the company of the Kingdom’s most distinguished and honorable men and women of the Marian Retinue, Ser Ulric Vyronov was tasked with completing four Knightly trials underneath the heeded squireship of Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich.

The second of the quartet of Knightly trials began with the Trial of Knowledge beginning on the 6th of Joma and Umund, 267 E.S.

TRIAL OF KNOWLEDGE: [267 E.S. - 269 E.S. | 1714 A.H. - 1716 A.H.]
Definition; “For this trial, you shall visit the libraries in both Reza and in the County of Nenzing and learn about Haense and the north in general more. You shall then be given a verbal quiz, which you must pass unanimously to be able to proceed to the next trial. The quiz shall consist of five questions to be selected from a random list, and a perfect score must be achieved in order to progress. It may be taken three times in a Saint's Week.” -Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich

Beginning on the 6th of Joma and Umund, 267 E.S., Ulric Vyronov made his long anticipated return from the northern reaches of Ayr back to the Royal City of [Old] Reza, where he’d continue his squireship under the guidance of Knight Paramount, Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich. From 1714 to 1716, the young knight-to-be underwent the ‘Trial of Knowledge’ for two years lasting from the autumn solstice of 1714 to the spring dawning of 1716.

With the Trial of Knowledge, the young Vyronov was tasked with venturing out to the County of Nenzing [Stafyr stronghold] and throughout the Royal City of [Old] Reza to obtain general knowledge about Haense’s illustrious history and culture. For a total of three months, the young lad spent his time studying with Lord Leopold Stafyr where he obtained knowledge from both historical books and from storytelling. At the end of his final week spent in Nenzing, he took and scored a perfect score of five with the first examination; which marked a third of the trial completed. After such successful study, he set out on his return to the bustling Haeseni capital.

An excerpt from a Haeseni history book, c. 1715

Promptly following his arrival to the city, he spent countless hours in the Alimar Memorial Library situated in the city center. It is rumored by Haeseni librarians that he spent undesirable hours locked up in the library’s study, where he himself learned more and more about the Kingdom’s initial founding and its governmental structure. After four and a half months of tired study, Ulric Vyronov was summoned to take his second verbal examination wherein he passed with yet another perfect score; marking his trial two-thirds complete.

At this point in time, the young Vyronov had developed the brash mindset that he himself was bound to complete this trial swiftly without any further difficulty; as a result of such, he began to spend less and less time studying and more and more time in the training pits with Lord Lerald Vyronov. While his swordsmanship excelled far past his peers, his ultimate preparation for the final examination lacked severely.

It was upon the blistering hot summer of 1716, where Ulric was summoned for a final time to the Prikaz Palace to participate in the last examination. Unfortunately, unlike the previous two times, he only managed to obtain a score of three out of five, resulting in him being issued out to train with the Brotherhood of Saint Karl from day to night for the next fortnight.

Despite Ulric Vyronov passing two of three verbal examinations, it was up to his final punishment to decide whether or not he would successfully complete the Trial of Knowledge. Incumbent Lord Marshal, Sir Otto Kortrevich confirmed that the adolescent lad had distinguished himself among the crowd of enlisted Brotherhood men and women and as such, convinced his cousin Knight Paramount, Ser Nikolaus Kortrevich to officially confirm the completion of the Trial of Knowledge of his Vyronov squire.

CONCLUSION
“To protect, and serve, the weak and defenceless from the evils of this world.” -Edict of the Order of the Crow

Prior to his continuation onto the ‘Trial of Skill’, Ulric Vyronov spent the next several months improving his hand-eye coordination in preparation for the daunting Trial of Skill that stood awaiting him at the start of the next year. . .

“From 1716 to 1718, the gutsy Vyronov set out on the Trial of Skill. . .”
