aldskar 842 Share Posted July 4, 2021 T H E COUNTESS’ CROQUET A POEM Penned by the hand of Lady Juliya Basrid, loosely based on events of the 3rd Imperial Social Season. An artist rendition of the event, by Claire-Marie Elmpool c. 1827 ANNO DOMINI 1827 One shining afternoon, green in the gardens while accented chitters hang airborne. Amidst the season of all seasons, surely several million reasons, to flock upon humidity and humour. Sparkling champagne bubbled with clink and clatter, a strike of their own; To strike, as mallet met ball, and so it may roll along lush lawn. From hoop to hoop. To win, and applause came, it was so, rebounding from gazebo eaves, as did birds, butterflies and bees. Spheres of color, uniformed by bands upon matching handles, certainly brandished between hushed titterings, discussion, that floated over head after head and freshly trimmed hedge. As evening drew close, and wine savaged champagne, Imperials still played the game, though ardent filled the air. Silent intensity that yearned for it to rage on. and so, rage on it did. Intense, it grew. Crowds grew fiery, some may applaud, some may boo. Croquet - such a great way to end a splendid day, though trailed off field did the fury of game run. Set off to destroy relations, Or perhaps to destroy new ones.. SIGNED, TRH, Juliya Rose Basrid of Susa
