A Southern Storm

A stale, oppressive heat lifted from the desert as the scorching sun over Savoy became cradled by the horizon and sunk to the land's relief. The night was unusually still; after baking all day the buzz and scuttle of life did not surface and tense quiet blanketed the hills. The great sand worm was dormant, the dancing vultures of yesteryear's gory rain hid, Fort Myrine slept, and the sprawl of Niseep was long dead. From the uneasy night came a breeze sweeping over the savanna whose cool brush jostled the sun-bleached tufts of grass, the first rustle in hours.

Overnight to some but in mere minutes to any lingering night owls a storm coalesced. The dim sky rumbled as black and heavy clouds crashed together and began their sweep south. The clap of thunder heralded a fine mist on the winds followed by a drizzle. Droplets became a spritz which became a rain which became a deluge. The stars were blotted out as the stormfront eclipsed all and sent its charge of whipping gales flanked by wave after wave of heavy rain. The savanna was blessed in this once-a-year drink but the sands had not felt such a gift in an age. The roiling darkness surged on and consumed the south where it wept unrelentingly and softened dunes, elicited mudslides, and compacted the earth in a slurry of silt, sand, and soil. The sudden monsoon was worthy of a hot and humid coastline, not this barren stretch of desert, yet it crackled and wept all the same.

With a crescendo in sky-splitting thunder and whipping winds did the storm settle in the short hours before the dawn. The gushing heavens tempered into a fair rain. The thrashing gales became a sweet summer breeze. The bleak clouds matured into a dreary yet charming gray. The earth drank deep of the waters.

Then, miraculously, it happened. In a slow and steady march the sands split as thin blades of grass wormed their way up to greet the sky and grew in seconds. Inch by inch, leap by leap, a subtle verdant glow from underneath the land itself sparkled on the dew of newborn foliage as grass and shrubs crawled across the previously wretched, baked, blasted landscape. The savanna crept its way south and filled in the lifeless gap. Decrepit and brutal, the sands could only shrink back in defeat as the grassland thrived.

Princess Renata withdrew her hands from the reins of her mount, clasping them together before her chest as she gazed out across the Savoyard plains- those which had once been empty sands.

"GOD has given us a true blessing on this day. A miracle." The sovereign spoke in a tone of reverence, her expression awe-stricken. "No one can contest the love He has for His leal children."

Sister Gabrielle finds some time the following day to head out into the newly formed savannah, finding a thin tree to sit beneath. The grass was fresh and soft, the scent of the lingering rains like a warm hug upon the senses. She stared out across the now verdant valley, unable to wipe the smile from her face. With a burning warmth filling her very soul, she thanked God and touched grass.

Andromeda Vandi'ir spent her afternoon relaying the tale of what she had witnessed outside Fort Myrine to her companions, speculating on how perhaps this alleged-miracle was connected to the various other anomalies taking place across Almaris. As much as others viewed it as a blessing, it seemed to only concern the mali'ker. What did this all mean?

An ebony-skinned man found some solace in this newfound growth, often opting to take afternoon strolls through the grasslands. Periodic plumes of smoke came in his frolicking - mind at-ease.

Hassan ibn Naric Zarkan frowned as he looked out over the newly lush savannah surrounding the city, "This only confirms my suspicions of unnatural activities in the Kharasi... even as the sandstorms in the Oasis still rage, this storm that brought green to this part of the desert still occured..." He murmured, sighing as he went to make some new marks down within his journal.

Sebastian Velho would walk through the San Luciano tunnel upon seeing the rain clouds in the distance. He'd let the droplets fall upon his palms as he let out a smile upon looking to the skies, a first after a long period of despair.

Walking through the grasslands, a young Otton Jazloviecki could be seen laying down in the newly born grass, laughing to himself. He would be seen to get up and sprint back towards the direction of the Margraviate of Lvinsk, presumably to tell his brother what had happened.

Ainsley Cutler would land upon the Southern continent on horseback, his recently crushed lower left leg hanging off of his horse. He'd wince at the pain, as was custom to him at this point, before looking around, his face drowned with confusion. "I swear the greenery nay be here before... I told ye these lands be accursed." he'd huff, seemingly speaking to a figure which did not exist to any other eye but his.

"Oy, ty kurwo, to je ale změna!" Jindrich Jazloviecki cheered. "To bude teď dobré, zelená je tráva!" He continued to cheer, but sadly in Tschech.

Maciej would translate "Oh ****, what a change! This will be good, green grass!"
