Dogged 2129 Popular Post Share Posted April 29, 2023 “Easy, now.” Branimar’s eyes stung as he watched the road through the leaves, unblinking. He ignored that sting, as he ignored the faint chill in the Petran wind, and the discomfort of squatting amidst the trees. “Any minute, now.” A faint creak of mail marked Ser Theodric’s assent as his side as the two men waited behind the broad oak’s trunk. He was one of several Minitzers and Haensmen that had come to Branimar’s banner of skirmishers, and he and his fellow Minitzers had failed to disappoint so far. He, of course, was not Branimar’s only ally; did he dare look behind him, he knew eight other faces would be waiting in the foliage behind him. “Do you hear that?” Theodric’s whisper echoed in his helmet. Branimar’s ears twitched beneath his cowl as he tuned in. The wind rustled the branches around them, birds warbled in the air, and his breath came in slow exhales. There. Yes. He heard it, just ever so slightly; between snatches of birdsong, there was something else, and it was growing louder. Hooves. Horses, galloping. Fast, by the sounds of it. “This is it!” he hissed, and rapped his knuckles on the trunk as he glanced back to the other skirmishers. “Look alive, boys!” Nods and creaks of leather and metal answered him. The afternoon light shimmered on the edge of exposed spears and blades. They could all hear the thunder of hooves, now, too. “On your mark, Ser Theodric,” Branimar whispered. He flexed his gloved fingers on the hilt of his claymore. The Knight nodded, and raised a hand with five open fingers. Five. Branimar listened to the thunder of horse hooves grew closer - it had to be three or four horses minimum, unless his hearing had failed him. I’m old enough to be going deaf by now, he told himself grudgingly. Theodric lowered one finger. Four. Old enough … He could barely remember the last time he had felt like this. This thrill, this anticipation … it had been so long that now it felt almost foreign to him. Another finger. Three. Branimar could hear the whine of the horses now, mingled with one man’s indistinguishable shout. Those horses would charge past the trees where they hid any second now. Two. Branimar had to stop himself from laughing. How could he have forgotten this feeling? This … the bated breath right before battle, knowing that he was about to chance that fine thread between life and death again … One. … that was living. As Ser Theodric lowered the last finger to form a fist, all ten skirmishers of Minitz and Haense sprang forward simultaneously. The Minitzer had timed it perfectly; their battle-cry deafened the neighing of the horses as they charged out, lances and spears flashing as they skewered into the surprised horses. With a mad cackle, Donald af Don - the man who had baited their prey out of Velec - pranced right past the spears that closed in on the two horses behind him like snapping jaws. Blood spewed out onto the road as three Adrian men - two of them on one horse - were snared in the trap. The steeds cried out their death throes, and deposited their riders on the ground with the last of their strength. Branimar locked eyes on one - a poor Adrian soldier who would lose his head before the fighting was done - and offered only a warm smile as he brandished his greatsword. As he shifted into his battle-stance, despite the pounding of his heart, he felt at peace. For all the innocent Minitzer civilians put to the sword by the Adrian marauders, this was justice. When it was all over - hours later, but it felt like the blink of an eye - he found himself staring at the beheaded corpse of an Adrian shoulder on the chopping block. He felt no remorse, though. After all, a man could not ask for a greater gift than a just cause to fight for. Spoiler ggs to both sides, was super fun rp all around. milkyi 1503 Share Posted April 29, 2023 Oksana's hand whipped through the air, striking Markus's head with a sharp thwack, "Vy insufferable zhenya!" She cursed as she glared daggers at him. "Vy could've gotten vyrself killed! Vy niet invincible, but merely a mortal man, so act like one!" @Nooblius
Nooblius 5794 Share Posted April 29, 2023 @milkyi Markus yelped as she slapped his head. He gives her a glare before continuing to wipe down his armor- covered with mud and slime from the tunnels of the Petra. Tremerus 271 Share Posted April 29, 2023 Theoderic would pick up the kit he had set aside for the execution. "It was an honor fighting alongside you all." He'd move to rejoin the Minitz contingent, saying a quiet prayer as he caught up with his brothers in arms.
Deets 682 Share Posted April 29, 2023 A Waldenian Patriot smiled proudly at his cousin, Theoderic, as the man delivered the sentence upon their captured foe. Placing a hand upon the man's shoulder, he briefly spoke. "Gutte work, Theo. You've made us all proud zhis day."
persz 88 Share Posted April 29, 2023 (edited) Hans returns to Velec, having escaped and evaded the assailants through the heartlands alongside the Sarkozic. Remains of mud and dirt extended up to where his knees were and the coif resting upon his shoulders was disheveled, yet his head, and all other limbs, remained. For that he was thankful. "I owe you, Lord Markus." @Nooblius Edited April 29, 2023 by persz
Fionn__TWG 2616 Share Posted April 29, 2023 Kyler af Don II watched as the beheading was done, grimacing somewhat as it was the first time he had witnessed such an act. "His pants dry, gutt." he nodded then, using the broken common he was subject to using when conversing with other cultures. "He listen. Nicht know why fight with Adrian dog, but nicht better way to die than when serve loyally, Ich think."
Nord 313 Share Posted April 29, 2023 Sir Darius recoiled in disgust at the sight of the small ambush, seeing no honour in the actions of the Minitzers and Haensers who had lowered themselves to no more than mere mountain bandits that sought to fight through deception rather than courage. "Disgusting." He muttered under his breath as the army then made its way to Minitz though none would offer a response as they remained hidden behind their walls, akin to vipers waiting to pounce if given the opportunity.

Yvian cheered, hearing the news from his comrades while amongst his fletching of fresh quarrels and arrows.
