LET IT BE KNOWN THAT THE TRIAL OF ANDREY KOVACHEV WAS CONDUCTED BY THE COUNCIL AND THE COUNCIL ALONE.

 

To His Royal Highness the Duke of Galahar,

 

It seems to me that you may be ill informed through whispers and have pinned the blame of your criminal brothers actions on your good brother, our King Marius III. In light of transparency, an effort which I have always aimed to champion, I write to you today publicly on the full proceedings of the trial and sentencing of your bastard-born brother, Lord Andrey Kovachev.

 

While the first arrest and trial for sedition and high treason against Andrey were indeed orders from the King, it was that very night where he also spared Andrey’s life when he could have easily been found guilty and executed for an egregious offense. Instead, His Majesty showed mercy upon your eldest brother and sent him to a peaceful path that would have certainly improved his behaviors.

 

It seemed Andrey was not interested in that.

 

Instead, he sought out Lord Marus Weiss, burned him alive, caused severe lacerations, and nearly killed a man without due process. Not only that, he also wounded his wife in the attack, causing her severe burns and cuts. Any rational lord would have issued a duel legally, and the motion would have been obliged. But your brother is no rational man. He acted with intent, with unapologetic cruelty, and was apprehended by our Lord Marshal just as he would have any other citizen.

 

On the night of his second trial, he was not only found guilty of assault, attempted murder, and branded a traitor for refusing his brothers, our King’s demands, but he also admitted to the crime of assault and attempted murder. Tell me, Your Highness, how do we set a man free when he admits to guilt?

 

His sentence was later determined by myself and the Aulic Council after the trial had concluded. Not even a day has passed as of writing this letter. But let us not forget, for Marus also acted wrongly. Marus Weiss was stripped of all his titles by the Lord Marshal for his inappropriate advances towards Lady Rezaliza Kovachev who, if you were also not aware, hides in a foreign nation with her children to shield her family from its abuser - Andrey.

 

As Lord Palatine I act as the direct authority of the Crown in its absence. Your King brother was to, naturally, be told at his earliest convenience and there may still be time for your traitorous brother yet. A third chance, perhaps. But heed my words, Your Highness.

Marus Weiss leant aside at the public letter, taking a breath.

The king had failed to merit the Weiss any protections, and that softness had almost cost his life. He had trusted that man.
The Lady Kovachev had left him to die. He had trusted that woman.

How much longer could he continue to give? He was doomed, one way or another if he stayed as he was but... Marus had peace with that. He followed his heart, he did what was right when others failed. He would not fail, not for the sake of his freedom or his life.

His over-filled heart sat heavy, shackled in his own promises and principles. The letter was lowered in his hands, resting gently upon his lap as he cast a glance with his lone eye to the bandages that lay by his side. At least for all his gentle sin, he succeeded in what he wished: for the Lady Kovachev, his closest friend and most trusted confidant, to feel loved and to find freedom from that man to which she was shackled. A slave of vows and expectations, doomed to misery. As with any other, his support was full and of pure intent, if offered by as flawed a man as any other.

Chewing on his cheek, his gaze tore from the bandages to a basket of gifted lemon tarts. Even if two-ponged betrayal still stung deep, a small smile flitted to him. Was she remembering to smile?
