I think the server has really drifted very far from low fantasy. It would require a very strong human empire to rise and focus on banning voidal magic and animii to be gritty and depostic.

Care about the stories and do not be afraid of loss. We’re on a server that doesn’t punish you for losing, so try to embrace that and know when to give up.

Even if I had survived I was threatened with disconnection. I guess some shit still works out but I’d really like to experience a Joel event where I’m not with room temp iq’s. Can’t wait for the day!

1. what's the most disastrous event you've seen on lotc. this can count behind the scenes on the staff side or player decision making

I started playing for real this past year (i dont count 2015 when Tahmas (dark timeline) brought me over...) and as a new player apotheosis was a two fold event of 'thats cool as hell' and 'what are the palabros DOING' especially when it came to sol invicta. decision making seemed rough in that one

2. how do you recommend someone to really establish themselves on a server like lotc. being a void head, a templar bro? a HUMAN?

3. what's this long running joke I hear about LT voting, why don't they do it. is it tedious? 

 

4. do you have any recommendations for players wanting to hold player events as someone who has been here since the dawn of time

1. I will not slander any events because my lawyers have advised me not to. It’s hard because most of the time in events player choice ultimately does not matter (tooting my own horn), so most events don’t really have those opportunities to shine the stupidity of decisions.

 

My favourite player moment was during the Inferi Crisis Antag and @nozoa (miss you) argued with me that olive oil molotovs were a legitimate weapon because they were the number one causes of house fires. 
 

2. Find a group of people you enjoy and stick to it, if you roleplay effectively and well, people will naturally start to see you as a cool figure and will flock. People want to be around good roleplayers, so if you’re consistent that is what you will bring.

 

3. Man LT voting is like one of the worst jobs because you have to be a nerd and look at everyone’s dnd multi class homebrew and point out its flaws and issues. It is a time consuming and not very fulfilling job, the LT doesn’t write lore it’s just a constant balancing team for what people try to throw at the wall. It’s the best and worst thing about lotc lore, the player input.

 

4. Quite a hot take here but,

do not just give people the outcome of the event with no effort. I did my bread and butter of hunt events for like 4 years straight as an ET and focused on how creating an environment where people have to earn their win is fulfilling for those that go the whole way. Even something as simple as a deer hunt can be stretched into multi event instances of preparation, tactics, trapping, observing the deer and getting information to finally get that proper kill. I made DIYs because people just farm a quick combat event for their haense/renatus/orenian knight ship to defeat a bear, and they would get extremely upset if there was any issues that did not give them a proper kill.

 

i guess on lotc being a “DM” is less like DnD, since you only have a small group that must pass everything you throw at them for their plot to progress. On LotC, you are the world and you help make every decision have weight, every instance feel real. So even things as small as hunts should feel brutal for those ill prepared, a simple group of children shouldn’t be able to slaughter a den of wolves, they should be eaten and the consequences follow. But this style is definitely not for everyone, I’m really all about the concept of a meaningful struggle to achieve your goals. Those who earn the effort will achieve a greater satisfaction at the end.

Do you think we're seeing a shift of the roleplay setting on the server being defined by nations to being defined by the ST and events that y'all run? I kind of think we're seeing ST events take the place of character development and reliable RP that nations used to provide, with all of the good and the bad that brings. Additionally, the only overarching stories on the server atm are coming from the ST.
