At sundown, a small band of fifteen set out from Valdev with one goal in mind.

 

Retribution.

 

They first rode through the township of Grense, whose militia strangely made no effort to sally out and stop them. They continued through the Langkette Pass until eventually arriving at their destination — 

Ravenmire.

 

Although premature in numbers, the riders wasted no time, circling around to the back and hastily scaling the walls. Once inside, they took to the square, only to find it devoid of any life. With free reign over the empty city, they smashed windows, forced their way into the gatehouse and set the tavern ablaze.

 

Their fury was far from sated, however.

 

The riders then took their leave to Lemon Hill. They pushed into the courtyard, where they happened upon three others. Among them was Prince Thorin Rostova of Ravenmire.

The skirmish that ensued was brief, and all but one — a boy no older than the age of sixteen — were taken captive and herded to a secure location.

 

In standing by a losing cause for the sake of his beliefs, Prince Thorin was commended for his valour by those who had deemed him their enemy. A priest was asked to give him his final rites, after which he was executed.

His death was swift and painless, with his body being returned to Ravenmire for a proper burial shortly thereafter.

It is a great shame that a man as honourable as Prince Thorin had to perish. Know you that for as long as this conflict endures, good men — be they Crows or Ravens — will continue to die.

 

We ask not of you to withdraw from this war, as we know that the Mother Church’s tyranny would see you destroyed for it, but we urge you to reflect on your situation.

 

Are the ambitions of your rulers truly worth the lives of your finest?

Something ate at Johanna about this raid in particular. "Were we not supposed to be defensive....?" She pondered. She rubbed at her wrists, for these actions led to her own capture, to her rushing through her own city rushing to evacuate it. Actions have consequences, and civilian blood was almost spilt over it.

In Lemon Hill, Father Marc Galbraith would deliver the following remarks upon reading the missive of the Covenant:

 

"Every time I read the motto of the Schismatic Covenant—‘United in Faith, Nary in State’—I am filled not with sorrow, but with outrage. How dare they call themselves Horenic and yet reject the very horenic principle of a united humanity? They seek to keep humanity divided, fractured, when we should be uniting under God’s will. This is a sinful and reckless path they walk, and I cannot remain silent as they drag others down with them.

 

It is true that we do not live in a united humanity today, and that is a terrible tragedy. We are scattered, broken, and lost because we have rejected the divine order that calls us to stand as one. The Church strives to build that unity, to heal the rifts that have torn mankind apart. Yet they, with their false ideals, fight against the very hope that could bring us together.

 

They do not understand—division weakens us. It invites suffering, chaos, and destruction. A divided humanity cannot endure; it falls to its own pride and ignorance. The Church is the only true foundation that can unite all people in faith, in purpose, under God’s guidance. But they stand in opposition to this, clinging to their misguided philosophy as though it were holy. It is not holiness—it is heresy.

 

They stand against the very order that God has set, and for that, I cannot remain silent. The truth is that humanity must unite under the Church to survive. And anyone who stands against that truth, who seeks to perpetuate division, is working in the service of the forces of the Great Deceiver.

 

The Holy Mother Church will continue its work, no matter their opposition. The path of unity will prevail, and those who choose to fight against it will be cast aside in the end."
