A JOINED HISTORY OF HOUSE MARENO AND VAN AERT

On the 11th of the Sun's Smile, 1853, the last defenders of Castle Breakwater, holdouts unable to escape during the breakthrough made the previous week, fell to the attackers of the Grand Covenant. The shredded swordfish of House Mareno, their proud fluttering a sign of Veletz’s resistance, were ripped down from their high places and cast into the flames of pyres built below. Interred beneath them were the bodies of orcs, elves, soldiers clad in the Stassion’s crimson griffin, and, most frequent of all, the dead infantry entombed in armor which bore the hound of van Aert. Over the subsequent nine years, the homes and lives of these people would be upended, and the Midlands would erupt in flames as the forces of the Grand Covenant, and the Holy Cause they claimed to represent, spared no Canonist soul.

As Mareno and van Aert, two of the three Great Houses of Veletz, were cut down and cast into exile, hunted by the Princes of Canondom for fear of their power, the blood they spilt upon the bountiful, now-burned fields of the Midlands was accepted by the Lord as sacrifice for their sins. Not only did their mixed blood, shed unconditionally in defense of the other, forge an undying bond between the two homes, it became a holy property of the message they received from the Lord in their defeat: fair Veletzia, crown of the humble Middelan, would be returned to them one day beneath the Army of the Cross. 

Seventy eight years after the breaking of Breakwater and the deluge of destruction waged upon the prized home of our houses, we return now to reclaim that which was stolen and consecrate these hallowed grounds to the memories of those martyrs of the Midlands. However, the occasion must not be one of sorrow remembrance, for even as due heed must be paid to our forebears, we must also be diligent in learning from their faults, as they would wish for us to do. A new era for the Houses van Aert and Mareno must be forged atop the scars of the past so that our shared future may be strengthened. The unwedded hands of His Highness, Prince Cassius of Myrine, Lord of Trident’s Peak, and Lady Madelief van Aert of Blackvale, shall be joined together to maintain the critical bond between both families as they enter a renewed Imperial era under the strong and just hand of His Imperial Majesty, Tiberias I.

His Highness, Cassius Mareno and Lady Madelief van Aert hereby invite you to bear witness as Father Ledicort de Senna shall join them in holy matrimony on the 9th of Tobias’s Bounty 235 S.A.
The celebrations shall take place in the old Church of Veletz.

After the exchanging of vows, the day shall not yet end, for glory and gold await.
In honor of the newlyweds, all able-bodied men and women of the Empire and beyond shall be called to arms to test their martial prowess in a grand tournament just below the ruins of Veletz.

Adelaide Emmeline of Artois did clutch the vellum missive betwixt her gloved fingers, her eyes alight with mirth as a radiant smile played upon her lips. The wax seal, bearing the crest of House van Aert, had barely been broken when joy overtook her countenance.

"Oh, how wondrous a thing!"  She gave a small laugh, not bitter but wistful. "Mayhap my own day shall come in the far future, when stars align and hearts are stirred… but for now, how joyous is this news!"

She turned then, silken skirts grazing the Halcourt Manor courtyard's freshly polished stone, her posture proud yet graceful.
"Henri, come hither!" she called, beckoning . "I have been graced with a most personal invitation—sealed by none other than Lady Madelief herself."

Hurrying to her closet, she dug for one of her pristine gowns - one she'd show to Madelief in time. Placing it upon her nearby table, she'd call for her parents. "May I have a guard for this event?" She asked the pair, offering puppy-dog eyes in return.

Helaine Elizabeth Helvets sought to take the missive from the servant's grasp, eager to open and read the belongings. Whilst enjoying the contents of the letter, the young Helvets kicked her heel forth, pacing across the Estate's dining hall. 

 

"Madelief finally announced her ceremony!" 

 

She'd announce throughout the Helvets Estate, quickly venturing to her sisters' quarters. With a quick tap of her index digit, Helaine urged them outside. "Prepare thyself for the wedding!"
