Alyssi shivered and pulled the wool cloak tighter around her body. The Amber Cold had just began, its winds a bit colder and faster than the norm. The wind picked up once more, its ethereal howling taking the form of ancestor’s voices long past. She stopped, shivering again, then adjusted her cloak once more and hurried onward. Each step jostled the torch in her hand, spraying the ancient, granite walls with a myriad of shadows that, like the wind, personified themselves into terrible creatures that should not be. Distracted so by her wild imagination, Alyssi didn’t notice the looming giant that stood between the doorway that signaled the end of the corridor. She slammed right into the hulking mass’s knees then fell to the ground, dazed. The torch’s flame immediately died, taken away by the ghastly, moaning wind.

The figure bent over and scooped up the child in her arms. She brushed some hair out of her eyes then gently kissed her forehead and nuzzled her cheek. She spoke gently but in a scolding tone, “Alyssi…daughter of mine…I know jaw are excite to leave this place and find mountain of jaw own, but now is ne time for that.” Alyssi sniffled once then buried her face in her mother’s bosom, whimpering softly. “A-alyssi sorry, momma…” Her mother only hushed her and gentle patted her head in response as they returned down the corridor Alyssi had come from.

During the warmer seasons, when the days were long and the winds were no more than gentle breezes, the temple was a place of fascination. Every pillar and wall was decorated with ancient carvings and runes, telling the stories of battles and heroes long gone. The basalt columns that upheld the entry-way arch were the most important, as engraved upon them was the story of creation. Alyssi ran her hands along the pillar, reading aloud the words her fingers traced. “Sun, who make all thing, give Father Or and Mother Hume spirits to protect them. Wolf, Boar, Bird, Bull. They, with Father Or, fight Moon each night to make sure Sun’s light is seen in morning.” She smiled as the elders behind her clapped, each one grinning broadly. “She has learned her histories well, Mother.” Dannica smiled and ruffled her daughter’s golden locks. “She is smart, like her father. Bird has blessed her much.” Alyssi tilted her head and poked a tusk, a mannerism that usually showed she was deep in thought. At last she pointed off in the distance, towards the bakery where the sugary scent of freshly baked sweetbread permeated. She tugged at her mother’s hand and looked pleadingly into her eyes. “Momma?” she asked. Dannica sighed and rolled her eyes. “Jaw love your sweetbreads, don’t jaw? Fine, go, go. But ne eat too much, almost time for feast!”

The elders’ faces grew more solemn as the child bounded away. The oldest of the trio stepped forward and bowed slightly to Dannica. “Jaw will still allow her to go off to find a mountain of her own?” His ancient, raspy voice inquired. She stared at the ancient for a long while, pondering what to say. Finally, as if with great strain, she nodded. “She is child, jes. But she is strongk and smart, like her father. I will ne allow her to leave now, but soons, when I know she can wield a blade and she has finished her smithing lessons.“ She turned from the elders to watch her precious daughter skip off into the crowd. Soon she would leave their mountains and start her own life. Soon she would leave her mother. Her precious daughter, nearly all grown up. She let out a sigh then allowed her mouth to curl into a bittersweet smile.
