* The Lord High Sheriff Kais Ishikawa sits in his office writing his memiors he thinks to himself and begins to write a entry that refers to his experiences in Oren he thinks of a conversation he once had with a Mage and writes down the title below

The Grand Game

"The Grand Game" or just "The Game" refers to the struggle between all nobles, royals of the Holy Oren Empire for influence, titles and lands. Every noble or noble born is subjected to the manipulation by their peers, if not being a player of the game then a pawn. There are few ways of getting out of the game, joining the church is one option a noble can choose to get out of the grand scheme. The Grand Game has only truly existed in the time Emperor Godfrey Horen I established the Holy Oren Empire creating new titles of nobility making those of noble birth scramble for them. Sometimes causing civil disruption the Emperor keeps these titles to reward those that are loyal to him but it makes nobles rivals to each other for example there are two Barons then one is made into a Count that will make the Baron resent the Count in future for him being a greater noble.

Nobles who play in The Game also fight for lands to be under them, even if the land is worthless nobles will kill each other to take it just to have more land then another noble to make him at least seem more powerful than other nobles. It isn't just lands or land titles nobles fight over, they will fight over honourary titles although seemingly worthless not actually holding power it makes the noble who receives the title favored in court and better established than nobles who do not hold these honourary titles. Then there are merits like medals and ribbons nobles will fight over, they fight over them because when there is a ball he who has the more medals looks better to the other nobles and they will be able to mingle with those who are more powerful better than those who are of the same title but hold no merits.

Success in the game is achieved by honourable and less honourable ways, some may achieve greatness through battle, joining the Holy Order of the Red Dragon or helping those less fortunate than themselves, other will use tactics such as bribery, rumors, scandals and implicating rivals in conspiracy if the player is less skilled in the game when facing against another player it may mean the end for them. In rare cases nobles and royals are known to sending assassins to kill their rivals, they make sure that their tracks are well covered however if one were to implicate them in an assassination plot they would be taken out of the game just as easily as their rival. It is said that "The Grand Game" has claimed more blood than Oren loses when they go to war.

Though the game isn't all politics, fashion is also a big part, both men and women nobility and royalty dress themselves up in bright colours and use cosmetics to make themselves look better than the lower players. masquerade balls are a way a player may try and one up him from other players, sometimes they are the greatest battlefields of "The Game", in these balls alliances are made and agreements concerning marriage and money are decided, nobles hire spies who can be anything from bards to servants, to even a players personal bodyguard. Though in the end all of these players are mere pawns in "The Grand Game" for the Emperor is the one who controls it all, in an instant he can end even the most powerful pawns part in "The Game" for good.

* Kais then puts down his quill and closes this entry of the book as he finishes writing his theory of Oren Nobility

(( So I got bored and decided to write this up as it is my characters theory on the nobility in Oren ever since Godfrey ascended to the throne. Feel free to give your opinions ))

This is absolutely wonderful and well written. I believe this is true, and very much how I see oren as well.

It has a grain of truth to it, sure; Nobles do fight eachother over extremely petty reasons, but the thing is they're not truly the ones in control at all, as stated, which is interesting.

They think they are, they think they make a difference, but no, their influence stretches to their petty pursuits and their limited realm. But in the end, Godfrey and those closest to him are truly in control. The Emperor is capable of pretty much striking anyone down in an instant.

Well at the end I did say in the end all the players are pawns, even the most powerful player can be taken out in an instant by the Emperor for the Emperor is the only true player.

Exactly. There's a reason he's called the Emperor.

A good writing about political science; you should write up a hard copy for in game.

More books regarding IC philosophy, beliefs, sciences and thought should be spread about. We really need more books which actually have content, and a political science work like this could be championed across the realm if it suits the populace.

I'll try and get a hard copy up in game so people can read it, just need the server to be up first :P

Well I got most of my inspiration from DAO from the the Nation named Orlais but I added a lot of my own theories to Oren nobility. But thanks for your compliments they make me feel confidence in my writing ability.

Yes, I think we'd all like to read more on this topic. Don't be surprised if a young court mage seeks out the author of such a book. I have the feeling these two characters will have something to talk about.
