The Death of a Phoenix

(I am posting this in multiple parts, due to it’s severe length)

-Part one-

I am a forum noob and couldn't get this working..

Nothing can scare away the nightmares, the deafening screams that filled her head when she was at rest. Even now as Ryder sat in the cold stone throne, her mind was being plagued by memories. She looked to the torches hanging on the walls, her thoughts suddenly flooded with the memory of that horrible day as she watched the flames dance in the darkness. Ryder took a deep breath, leaning back and closing her eyes to try and scare away the memories overtaking her.

“Ryder dear?” She heard that familiar voice bring her out of her trance, the sweet and soothing sound of Lancel. Her eyes snapped open, she looked over to see him turned towards her with a look of concern on his face. “huh?” She managed to murmur, a blank look on her face. The Princess looked around the hall, the faces of all who attended court were on her. “Would you like to attend the meeting later?” Lancel asked her again, her having missed it the first time. Ryder shook her head, a red ringlet brushing against her freckled cheek. Lancel nodded and got to his feet, kissing her hand gently before retiring to the meeting room. The throne room soon emptied behind him, leaving Ryder alone to her thoughts once more. Closing her eyes once more she heard the sound of heavy footsteps against the stone floor. She sighed heavily, not wanting to open her eyes to greet the newcomer. That was, until she heard the melody.

His voice was clear as day, the deep sound resonating in the hall and to her long elven ears. He sang a melody so haunting, it sent a slow chill up her spine, making her cringe. “No..” she thought, listening to the melody, “no.. no.. I’m dreaming”. She didn't dare open her eyes, the fear overtaking her. She had turned to stone, unable to move in fear of seeing what was standing before her. But she knew.. somehow she knew what it was. “Ezekiel...” she whispered to herself. Her breathing became more rapid as she felt him approach, “Ryder...” she heard his whisper in her ear.. his cold breath on the nape of her neck. “Ryder...”

Ryder’s eyes flew open, she bolted to her feet, clutching her dagger tight in her hand. As she looked around the throne room she saw no sign of anyone, or that anyone had been there in a while. The torches along the wall had all but died down, the last bit of sunlight could be seen shining through the windows and onto the cold marble floors. She started to shiver, looking around in intense fear. Sighing in relief she took a deep breath and sheathed her dagger, turning to leave the throne room.

As Ryder turned she was met with a horrifying sight, standing inches from her face stood a man taller than her, dressed in dark robes and breathing heavily as he looked at her. Ryder froze, her scream getting caught in her throat as she stared in horror in the figure. He took a step towards her, his hood falling off and revealing the face hidden under the shadow. All that remained of the face was the burnt flesh that hung to the bone, the icy grey eyes piercing her soul. . He reached towards her, bits of burnt cloth and flesh freely hanging from his arm. “Ryderrr..” His hoarse voice managed to whisper. “Why did you betray me?”.

Ryder shook her head, her emerald eyes filling up with tears. “I d-didn't mean to” she manages to say, her hands shaking intensely. She remains frozen in fear once again, the dead man standing right before her. He runs his hand along her fleshy cheek, tilting his head as he looks at her. His jaw opens wide, barely hanging by the blackened flesh, tilting his head he lets out a blood curdling laugh.

Ryder stumbles back, her foot tripping on her throne and sending her back to the floor. She lets out a whimper, tears pouring down her face in fear as she crawls away quickly, scrambling to her feet and running towards the door. The laughter follows her, yet she can still see the dead man standing where he was, his burnt hand outstretched towards her as she fumbles with the door.

Ryder fell against the door as it opened, her eyes blinded by the light of the rest of the palace. She takes deep labored breaths, trying to calm herself as she leaned back against the door, the laughter gone from the halls, yet still echoing in her head. “Something wrong, your highness?” asks a maid peering around the corner. Ryder looks up, quickly wiping her eyes and nodding her head quickly. “Y-yes, everything is fine” she replied, standing up and straightening out her gown.

Ryder looks down the long hall towards the stairs to her bedchamber, the hall seems longer than usual as fatigue starts to take it’s toll on her. Her hands still shake as she tries to calm her breathing, running her hand along the wall to keep her guidance. Ryder lets out a whimper, clutching her side and leaning against the wall, she breathes deeply and quickly, trying to get through the sharp pain. The Princess pushes herself off the wall, determined to get to her bedroom, she makes heavy steps across the hall, reaching out to the railing of the staircase.

Step by step she makes her way up the spiral staircase, watching her feet as she clutches her side in pain. The shaking continues, spreading through her body to her legs. Ryder makes her way to the top of the steps, smiling slightly as she sees a pair of feet at the top. “I need help.. my love” she says weakly, reaching her hand out to Lancel. Her hand grips hold of cold flesh, her eyes grow wide as she feels the burnt and rotten texture. She looks up, her eyes once more meeting the burnt remains of Ezekiel, He gives a toothy grin, his eyes full of malice and hatred towards her. Ryder let go of his hand, weakness overtaking her body and stuck by fear, she stumbles back. She lets out a loud scream before falling back down the stairs, falling into the hallway below.
