House History:

The Beginnings of House Tarus

According to the House Elendil records,

“Haren wed the Elvish princess Morwen Idril wed and soon started House Haren which for five generations had ruled Oren in a time known as the "Age of Peace" until Seneschal Owynn Godwinson had King Elendil II removed from power and exiled him into the north.”

House Elendil, by Artorus Elendil.

Nearing the end of this time period, when the house of Elendil came to the North, there lay a further north nation. Already established to the far north was House Tarus, a long forgotten, long docile nation of the frost of the north but fierce as the beasts that reside there. They lay past the Adunian Sea, as it were called by the Elendil people, where the Matriarch Deledah Tarus sat on a Throne of Iron. She had been the first to raise the Sigil of the Wolf, originally scrawled in the blood of the beasts of the North on the pelt of a rare Albino Wolf. The mast flew high the first time the Tarus brood were seen on the Horizon of Adunia. It was very fortunately the first visit in a series of profitable visits. These were the weapons of choice for hunting and fighting in the North and securing their lands from icy barbarians and the likes.

According to the oldest records, after the Adunian-Tarus first conflict war, Adunia brought lumber and building supplies en mass, which allowed the Tarus Brood in turn to prosper. To Adunia from the rich mines of the north the Tarusians delivered iron, heaps of iron, and obsidian. The network of trade was prosperous for both nations, both leaderships, as both in turn grew military. From the simple settlements and natural formations of the North the Tarusians grew, evolved, and expanded. No longer were they mere barbarians, they were Nobility. They were the same men to the South, but, they were colder, they were harder, and they were loyal as steel was to the hand that wielded it- forever, should it be there to obey.

Three Settlements grew in what was now known as the Holy Land, perhaps a parody. It seemed like God had abandoned these frozen tundras. To the south was Bruti, the capitol city, where the Iron Throne rested and the matriarch once nursed the young, growing nobility that was her son, Anduin. Bruti was a tall, defiant fortress city that was built up to the peak of a mountain and burrowed into for the keep. A large tower, coming forth from the ground like bones, stood tall on each plateau, each terrace, on the way to the city at the top of the mountain. Surely the city seemed impregnable.

To the East was Stormwatch, a fortress city built under a mountain peak to shield it from the raging Eastern winds that tore through the area. Here the hardest men of the Tarusian kingdom were born. In the tall, permafrost ridden walls, where the snow rose twenty-feet a day and bears larger then trees roamed in search of a child or man dumb enough to stumble into the biting cold... Men were wolves here, men lived by wolves, and although Storm watch was not the original capitol, Stormwatch was the original birthplace of the Tarusian Monarchy to the north. It stood vigil to the harsh unknowns beyond... some rumors say men who cast lightning and fire and summon the cold bones of the ancestors lie in the storms. Some said the storms -are- the creations of these same magi.

To the West lay Tarisport. Tarisport was the second city to be constructed and was the only major port to the Northern Wastes. Here was the input and export of iron and ores and the import of raw goods and materials for construction. It was also the Renaissance and Revival of Technologies and Religion. Faith slowly began to restore the the Northern Wastes, the training of Paladins began, warriors of holy fervor, and insulation and construction techniques began to be researched into. Cities expanded further into sprawling fortress towns, protected from the cold, able to even farm in greenhouses now, and making these people all more docile, excluding Stormwatch. Stormwatch would always be a land of brutal warriors and strong men and women and wolves.

By the time these cities were grown out, settled, and finished, Anduin came of age to take the throne. Anduin became known as “Anduin of Conquest”. Anduin immediately set out to force the northern tribes to the ‘dark lands’, lands covered in further dangers, more so then the local barbarians or giant bears. He lead an army of men, ten-thousand strong, to murder every tribe he came across and force them across the wastes back to the North. In history, it was said he returned in a fourth his army, frost bitten, and a smile on his face. His conquest was called the “Trail of Icemen”. Many of the men who had followed Anduin to the north had died in the process, some freezing where they stood, drilling, sleeping, and the likes. Anduin went on to be the precursor to the modern Tarus family, where Eze’kiel traces his lineage and likeness from.

He married a northern-tribeswoman who offered herself to spare her tribe. Anduin took the gift willingly, but, killed the tribe anyways. It was said she tried to kill her after their child was born later, but, he killed her as well. He felt no sorrow in his actions and was pleased with the turn of events; his enemies were dead, he had a son. His son had the fire imbued in his mother’s last breaths and heartbeats.

Adelas Tarus was a hot-tempered and fiery man. He was also devout and pious to the Gods brought from the Southern lands and became known as “Adelas of Intolerance”. He went on a rampage with a newly raised army of Paladins to crush all false idols and kill those not worshiping his gods. He even considered magi to be “abominations of all that is wrong, immoral, and defiant of our lord”. He made many powerful enemies quickly, which is why he is later known as “Adelas the End”. He was the last King to rule the North; perhaps it was destiny, but perhaps he really did bring this upon himself. In his reign, the storms began again, and in them, lay an enemy unexpected.

It was a horrible night that lightning struck on Bruti, relentlessly, crumbling the city in the midst of the night. It was said that fire rained from the sky and the souls of those Adelas had fought and killed rose to defeat him, still defiant in death. He fled like a coward from the impregnable tops of Bruti. He swore and cursed the names of every Magi he killed, but, it was a force far deviant. The Undead hidden in the North had learned of the growing faith in God, and, decided it was time to end it. It was would be no task to fight the unaware, very physical Tarusian men with the powers of Iblees by them. They had come right over Eastwatch and crumped the mountain they were under on top of them. The city and fortress were crushed and anyone who lived inside starved or froze or suffocated. They then marched onto Bruti as Adelas slept and stirred him.

They chased him all the way to the boats of Tarisport, cursing his name, and trying to kill him their selves as he jumped on a boat with some loyal men and his wife to be, Stephanie. He laid with her that night as the oceans echoed the screams of death of his Kingdom. He was surprisingly uncaring. They came to Adunia some months later, near out of food, and in disguise. His wife was with young and they made haste through the city. According to a recorded recount from one of his men, “Adelas was far less pious then he claimed to be. The second his kingdom fell; he hardly seemed like the man of god he tried to be. He cried in the night and hit his wife in anger. He was an unkempt beast, one his father surely would of slain in days of old.”

His wife gave birth in some old ruins of the Half-Elfs, cursed, some called it, others called merely said it was an old Magi's tower. Adelas was very upset his son was born in this musty old hole. “A tomb fit for pagans.” Some nights after his wife tried to calm him with a drink, and a night of love and leisure. The night quickly went bad when Adelas drank too much and began to beat his wife a little harder then he expected. His wife began to bleed and in a fit of blood lust he kept hitting. A guard rushed in to stop him and Adelas drew his sword and fought. He was a poor swordsman by this time, especially drunk, and the guard slayed his former King. He helped Stephanie outside, to a horse, and sent her off with a word, “His seed lives with you; raise him wiser and in secret”.

When she tried to return in the morning the tent was burned and a sign of a struggle. It is assumed by scholars that the guards turned on each of their brethren for failing their duties, the ‘treachery’ by the lone guard, and in a short power-struggle given the Royal family was gone. She moved south and west of Al’khazar in this time, with her son, Tulric. Tulric was unlucky but he was smart, he was strong, and he was an ideal son to restart the family with. But he never seemed right, when he first grasped a sword and swung it, the blade literally flew off the hilt and through the window, nearly killing his mother. When he tried to train a wolf, it died later, hit by a passing by cart. However he met a neighboring girl, one who’d grow up to be his love interest. Her name was Kel’resa Sun-storm, she was a foreign trader from Kramaroe, wealthy, polite, and diplomatic. Tulric was happy to play with her and be her friend while her father took his goods into Al’khazar to sell.

During this time, Stephanie grew older, as did Tulric. Life went by and Tulric was already nearing thirty, his mother nearing seventy. Neither of them looked a day over thirty and it was ***** as to how this came about. In the dead of night, a group of bandits came to Stephanie’s house while her son was out with Kel’resa, foresting, and seeing a play in the Malinorian theatre. While Tulric enjoyed the play with his betrothed, his mother was being raped, being beaten, being slowly murdered for hours. Near the end of this Tulric came into the house and saw the four men. He tapped into his rage, deep down in his gullet, and drew his blade. “You bandits have no honor, no dignity, no pride. If your only legacy will be the blood I spill; so be it.” He cut them all down in a flurry of blows, dismembering them, debowling them, gutting them. He dropped his sword and walked over to his mother and held her and cried, “You are his se-seed. You’re his seed... his seed... our family, our blood, Adunian and Tarusian lives on in you- you are roya-royalty Tarus. Prosper”, as she slipped into the hands of death from the wounds she sustained. Tulric threw a torch onto the homestead and left quietly, sadly, and changed with her wife. He was no man of peace, no man of kindness anymore. He was a man of diligence, justice, servitude, and family.

Together, Kel’ressa and Tulric moved further west over the small body of water behind the Keep, near Alras, and made their Estate. Tulric, Kel’ressa, and the local men they hired all put the walls together of a lovely home behind thick high walls. Tulric and Kel’ressa felt safe finally, and Tulric made talks of going into Al’khazar, making a name for himself. “The people of Oren are good men, plentiful, and full of variety. They are the sort of people I would align myself with, they know honor as well as a Paladin knows his vows, a husband knows his wife, and a father knows his son.” He patted a young boy on the head and smiled, “I know my son well... he will be someone.” The thoughts of prosperity and acceptance into the nobility of Al’khazar were promising, but, Tulric couldn’t be alone. The Tarus family was cursed it seemed. In the night came the downtrodden bandits, his mothers murderers, who stormed his estate and slaughtered his workers. He grasped his sword and looked back to his wife, who was screaming his name to come. “I cannot, go, without me. I must protect the land I swore to raise for my son and give him something to come back to.” He stepped out the door into oblivion, for all he killed, two more rose, and he was overwhelmed. It was a bloody night indeed.

Stephanie made it to the gates of Al’khazar as the guards ran out to retrieve him. “Ma’am, are you alright?” They called to her, and she smiled a bit and fell over, with arrows in her back. They rolled her on her side and saw the babe at her tet, and pulled her off. A young Eze’kiel was crying loudly, with a thin layer of dark brown hair coming in on the crown of his head. They brought him into the city towards the Orphanage as smoke filled the distance and blood covered the road.

Long ago in the days of old Horen, after the Great War, when Horen was on his last rope and death seemed to be imminent, Horen named his successor. Haren I. shortly before his death by axe. Time went on and time went by, and Haren I took his time as King.

Early History

Eze'kiel is the son of Tulric Tarus. He was adopted by the Dwarf family the Ironmenders after his parents died young. Eze'kiel was especially close to his adopted grandfather Gustaf. They moved together to Oren after the death of Eze'kiel's parents where they started a town and Eze'kiel became a Templar. Eze'kiel was given the deed to the Tarus estate by his aging grandfather, and became the Head of the House Tarus when Gustaf was killed by Undead. His sister Atriana Tarus turned to the Undead, leaving Eze'kiel saddened. Eze'kiel tracked down his cousins Richard and Sam, who joined his family.

The Phoenix Revolution

Eze'kiel grew tired of the rule of the Sheffields. It was under King Enor's reign that Eze'kiel joined the Phoenix Revolution, designed to overthrow the Sheffields rule and put a new king in charge of Oren. The Phoenix Revolution grew in size and influence, attracting diverse supporters such as adventurers, soldiers, historians and many important political and military figures from Oren. The headquarters of the Revolution was established on the White Road. Then an event occurred that shocked the revolutionaries - King Enor voluntarily handed the crown to Gaius Marius. In response, the revolutionaries seized Galahar. After negotiations and talks between Gaius Marius and Eze'kiel it was decided that a biumvirate would be formed, with Gaius Marius ruling the Realm of Hanseti in the east and Eze'kiel ruling the Kingdom of Renatus in the west.

Asulon

After arriving in Asulon Eze'kiel and the rest of Renatus occupied the ruins of an ancient Human city. Restoration of the city was slow and some Renatans expressed concerns over the possibility of attack. Recognizing that work was hindered through inefficiency Eze'kiel dissolved the Council of the Phoenix, giving himself far greater personal power. The move was generally applauded as people hoped it would speed construction of Arethor and give strength to Renatus. In year 8 Eze'kiel left Renatus to search for the missing Prince James, leaving Reynard Lycian as reagent.

As the Empire Emerges

Godfrey Horen, nephew of Eze'Kiel, began work on reuniting the Human Kingdoms under the name of Oren once again. He soon accomplished this and thus, The Empire of Oren was born. Eze'Kiel was given a Duchy in the far Western part of Renatus near the Adunian city of Ildon. Eze'Kiel was reunited with his old friend, Artorus Elendil, and with their seclusion from the main parts of Oren Eze'Kiel and Artorus became annoyed and maddened by the Emperor's lack of caring for them and began planning rebellion.

New Loyalties

The attempted rebellion was lost, and although the Emperor gave Eze'Kiel as second chance, the Patriarch of House Tarus decided to move his family to a new home. And so he created the Kingdom of Eyveror with the Dwarven Nation. Eze'Kiel reigned as King for many years before a sudden loss of hope and willingness to live came over him. He made his way to the palace of Oren to confront Godfrey. This visit went down as the end of a legacy. Eze'Kiel was lit on fire within the throne room and died. His belongings, his Kingdom, and his history all went to his son, Edward Tarus.

The Building of a Short Lived Kingdom

Edward quickly took control of the Kingdom of Eyveror, and as the races of Aegis set sail once again he was preparing himself to rule. Once landed on the island of Elysium, Edward made his way to the coast line of the island where the Dwarves allowed him to build his kingdom. Edward did his best to spread the word of how Eyveror was bringing back the old ways of Oren, where people felt free. He slowly gained support and citizens. The Edict, a military group looking for a home, joined Eyveror and swore fealty to King Edward. And with much suppression from Oren, the Adunians looked for a home within the Kingdom of Eyveror, which caused more harm than Edward would have thought.

The Fall of Eyveror

The years had taken their toll on the family. House Tarus was not what it once was under the leadership of Ezekiel. As the rebellion died down, the Tarus’ moved to the Kingdom of Eyveror under the protection of the Dwarves. There on the island of Kalos they began to build a settlement, a Kingdom where they could live in peace and under the ways of Old, or so they thought.

As the days turned into weeks, and months, and years, the kingdom grew in size. Emperor Godfrey and those in Oren took notice to this. More and more people were leaving Oren and moving to Eyveror. As this new kingdom grew, so did its influence. Finally, Emperor Godfrey realized what had to be done, he had to suppress this rising power. The order was given and the Kingdom of Eyveror was attacked. Little resistance came against the mighty forces of the Holy Oren Empire and the battle was quickly over. The Phoenix King, Edward Tarus looked out over his kingdom as it slowly burned to the ground. All hope was lost, and before he knew it he was slain by the one and only Thalin Letholdus, who said Edward had failed in his endeavors. Edward’s closest family almost disappeared as the Phoenix Grand Marshal, Ser Talon was declared dead as well. The family was falling apart and no one could help them.

The Creation of House Valkrae

A few months went by before the Tarus’ were heard from. In the end the monks had found Talon’s body and healed him of his many wounds. When he had fully recovered he set out to seek out answers. What had he done wrong? Was his decision to follow Ezekiel and later Edward the wrong decision? His journey brought him before the throne of Emperor Godfrey yet again. Talon approached the throne of the Holy Oren Empire his gaze falling upon Godfrey. He kneels down and bows his head for a few moments and then looking up he stands and addresses the Emperor.

"Your majesty, I have come to ask for your forgiveness yet again. The first time was to inform on my decision to follow Eze'kiel. Now I come to you asking to be accepted back into the place I have loved since the beginning of time. Throughout my time in the Kingdom of Eyveror I thought long and hard about my decision, contemplating on whether it was the right one. I have come to realize that it was not. I stand before you today to ask for forgiveness and the ability to start again in the Empire. In return I offer you my services once again as a Knight of the Holy Order of the Red Dragon and the lives of my men. During my leave I organized a group. You might have heard about them before, The Phoenix Guardians. We have grown strong and would ask that you take our services as your personal mercenaries and soldiers as we are highly trained. Apart from other groups we are loyal and respectful to those in authority over and only want the best for you and the Empire. Please consider this apology and allow for us to have redemption."

Emperor Godfrey, seeing the true repentance in Talon’s apology nods and grants him the status he once held years ago before the rebellion. Now realizing the true loyalty and grace of the Emperor, Talon wonders where he could have ever have been turned to think wrongly of Godfrey. Leaving the throne room, Talon immediately reports to his old Knight Chapter Lion. Commander Ser Jonathan Black, welcomes him warmly and again he realizes the grace of Oren and the mighty Empire it has grown to be.

A few days pass and Talon gets word from his father that he will be returning to Oren from his own travels. When Haelphon and his son finally meet once again, it is a glorious sight. They embrace each other laughing and crying at the same time, as so much time has passed since they had seen each other. From that day on a new chapter had began in their family’s history. This new chapter also came with a new name. The bitterness of Edgar, back in the newly created Hold of Kastoria, sent a letter that they were to change their name immediately. And so, House Valkrae was formed and their legacy will continue to grow in years to come.

The Reemerging of Two Families

Talon died about 25 years after the creation of House Valkrae, leaving his lands to his son, Andrik Valkrae. Little happened within the lands of House Valkrae during Andrik's time as Count, but soon war started and the Empire was dissolved into four kingdoms; Oren, Savioe, Adunia, and Salvus. With these recent event, Andrik decided that House Valkrae should return to their old family and so he rejoined the Taruses within the Kingdom of Adunia.

A Son's Departure

Eze'Kiel Tarus II, son of Edgar Tarus, felt that he had little use within the Kingdom of Adunia. With much personal thought, Eze'Kiel journeyed to the palace in Abresi and asked King William III for acceptance back into the Kingdom that his family had much quarrel with in the past. Eze'Kiel was instructed to find a lost artifact in the ruins of the wilds so that he may prove his faith in Oren and the True Faith of the Creator. He began his quest and soon completed it, returning to William with the cross. With much pleasure, William thanked Eze'Kiel for finding the artifact and made the family of Tarus a House of Oren once more.
