History Ouity Deathsbane was born and raised in Snowy Fields, deep in the heart of the frozen north. He lived his early life among his kinsmen, learning the simple craft of a Northerner on the fringe of the world; how to hunt, gather food, be thrifty with what few supplies they had, and to be a noble and thoughtful man. He stayed home until the age of 16, when the Undead wars erupted around him. Suddenly, his home became a battlefield. Dead were piled and burned in the squares, shadows became one’s worst enemy, and the threat of being snuffed out at a moment’s notice was overbearing among all who were lucky enough to survive the first wave. Desperate to help his kin, who had found themselves on the frontline of an impossibly bloody war, Ouity journeyed to Aeriel’s Keep, and enlisted with the Followers of Aeriel: The mortal army of the Ascended. Among this new family, Ouity learned to fight from master generals, warriors, scouts, and learned under Ascended and scholars. This new life, of course, came with great danger. Every day, he would stand on the northern wall to behold the keep of the Undead which towered merely a few hundred meters away. Not a single day went by when he did not draw arms against Iblees’ minions, and over time, he took part in battle after battle in an attempt to keep the corruption which had engulfed his homeland from doing the same to anyone else. Aeriel’s Keep, and the neighboring human capital of Al’Kazar became a sort of buffer zone. Battle after grueling battle took place. Every time, ominous clouds would gather, and could not be dispelled by any magic of Druidic, Holy, or Arcane in nature. Suddenly, lightning would come down like rain, smiting dozens, as the dead rose from the soil beneath. Cloaked figures stood upon the rooftops, their red eyes staring down without mercy as fire and plague came down upon the people. White robed figures would flit from rooftop to rooftop, vanishing with the blink of an eye to reappear somewhere else, blazing white fire erupting from their staves to engulf dozens of foes. It was never quite enough. In the midst of the fighting, the Followers of Aeriel were disbanded by the Ascended, who had discovered spies in their midst. Now, with all those who were not of Aengul blood forced to leave, Ouity spent the next two or so years in the dreary slums of Galahar. In this place, Iblees worship and unholy magic ran rampant under the corrupt officials and careless guards. Ouity, penniless, broken, and alone found simple lodging in a cramped room on the second floor of an inn. He was only able to afford this small resting place due to the generosity of the innkeeper, who insisted he pay half price for his service to the people of Aegis, one of the first true acts of kindness displayed to him since he had left home. To this day, Ouity still feels indebted to Hosper Blackthorn, one of his last remaining friends. Over time, mortals were allowed back into the keep, to continue fighting the Undead in the north. Though they fought valiantly, the efforts of the Followers of Aeriel were simply not enough. After years of fighting, Al’Kazar eventually succumbed to the fire, taint, and miasma, turning the once beautiful city into a nightmare fortress of the Undead. The Followers of Aeriel, cut off from the keep, made a snap decision to join forces with Alras, and become the United Aegis Coalition. Unfortunatly, other nations viewed this pact with jealously, seeing Alras’ alliance with the Ascended as a bid for power. A war with the Dwarves ensued, and Ouity, bitter for having to fight a war between the races, rather than the Undead, left his post, feeling south in an attempt to escape the violence. Over time, Ouity began to take more and more interest in Druidism. He viewed it at first as a silly cult. After all, Aeriel and Iblees were the main players on this stage, who cared about a few silly treehuggers? However, his mind was quickly changed as he witnessed a Druid singlehandedly suppress the miasma around Al’Kazar long enough to rescue King Enor, a feat that he had never witnessed before. Eager to learn more, he made a pilgrimage to the Grove of Laurilen, where he studied amongst the twisting maze of dead ends, secret rooms, and endless adventure. Seeing and hearing of Druidism, Ouity began to wonder if this path would bring him peace, allow him to create peace. Could it be done? It was here Ouity’s true journey began. Shortly after his attunement, Ouity traveled back to northern Aegis, to continue to aid the fighters against the Undead. Using his newfound gifts, and reverence for nature, Ouity aided the armies of Aegis as best he could, healing wounded, battling the taint, and erecting barriers and shields for attacking and defending armies alike, with the aid of other Druids learned in the arts of war. Though the war dragged on for many years, they never made any significant ground over their foes, though Ouity's efforts were only redoubled because of this. The Undead must never be allowed to reach the holy forests in the south. Eventually, the Undead began their final push, and Ouity watched in horror as city after city, friend after friend, and countless many were torn away from the hands of Aegis. He watched in horror as brilliant explosions took the cloud temple, reducing it to a heap of rubble. He fell to the ground, sobbing as the holy forest of Laurilen was set ablaze, and the great Druids’ Grove slowly tumbled to the ground, crushing any elf not wise enough to have fled to the Verge. The Undead were defeated in their home, the Nether, but the people of Aegis- what was left of them- were left with nothing. Not a single livable home, air filled with deadly miasma, and dangerous beasts of the Nether still lurking. They did the only reasonable thing left, and fled to a new land. Asulon For the first few years of the new world, Ouity lurking in the shadows, dealing with the grief of a lost war, a lost home, and lost friends in solitude. Eventually, he ventured out, and rejoined with the Order, just in time to see it split into two. He chose his side, and moved to the coastline grove of Cerridwen, where nothing really happened ever. After some time, he was reunited with an old friend from Aegis, Alyssi the orc-dwarf-human-thing. Though others were quick to judge her for the breeds she came of, Ouity was fascinated by her customs, and her gentle nature. Soon enough, she came to live among the Cerridwen circle, and soon after that, she bore him a son. Soon after the child’s birth, Alyssi vanished, presumed dead at the hands of Guarim. Ouity buried his grief in his child, Lorthas, whom he raised alone. Around age eight, the Druids reunited in Salvus, and Lorthas became a dedicant. On the eve of his thirteenth birthday, Lorthas set out on his Grand Task, to revive an ancient grove in the heart of Hanseti. Without goodbye, or word of his leaving, he simply set out, leaving a small note behind for his father. On this day, Lorthas was killed at the hands of the Hanseti guard, the Teutonic Order, throwing Ouity’s already frayed life into chaos. When Ouity learned of his son’s fate, he was almost driven mad. Perhaps he was driven mad. All he knew was that he stepped down from Arch, and fled back to Malinor, his head spinning, his chest pounding. How? Why? His son, his last remaining treasure was gone. Simply gone. It couldn’t be. No! NO! Ouity clung to life, having stripped himself of the responsibility of Arch Druid after seeing through the lies of Arik, who claimed his son could yet be saved. This lie, intended to keep him from wreaking havoc on the killers only fueled Ouity’s rage when he realized the deception. While indeed Arik managed to save many from Ouity’s wrath, it tore him apart once more to realize that he would never see his son again. He never said goodbye. Few things now kept Ouity from tumbling over the lisp of insanity. His few remaining friends grew more and more sparse over the course of years, though he did his best to bury himself in Druidism, meditating, planting, and even preventing death via age for himself through Drudic rites, a feat few could or have accomplished. He pitted himself bitterly against those who would lash out against the Druids, waging solitary war against organizations like the Wilhuns, who sought to stomp out all forms of magic. He kept his distance from the Druids for a time, feeling betrayed that they had not helped him to find his son, or avenge his death. Lorthas’ body was never recovered from the cold reaches of Hanseti, leaving a deep, gaping hole in Ouity’s heart. He steeled himself against all entry into his inner thoughts and perceptions, creating an iron wall between himself and would-be friends. The Order was very much the only thing keeping him from taking his own life. Anthos As the Druids wandered through this new world, Ouity’s heart was bleak and his soul utterly devoid of joy. Another home destroyed. Another life taken from him. He took the trek to his new home with brothers and sisters he hardly knew. Strangers- people he had never met but who looked upon him with respect that sickened him. He deserved no respect, he was a failure. He carried the then-blind Isabella on his back, across the entire land of Anthos. He claimed it was so that she wouldn’t slow them down, but it was not lost upon him that the path was rough, and that a blind one could easily hurt herself on the cobble. He never even came close to realizing she would one day be his salvation. As she received the gem that would give her some phantom sight, he was unable, despite his best efforts, to prevent a small amount of her joy from seeping into his own soul. Years passed, as they always do. The flow of time was lost upon Ouity, who was about as miserable as a man can be. Alone, always alone with his thoughts- of friends gone, killed, or simply withered away by time, groves burned down, battles waged… one day he decided he wanted it to end. He abandoned his duties, indeed, he still had duties- to protect the Order quietly, without fuss, to kill and destroy that which unbalanced nature. He left that, and walked outside the grove, intent on taking his own life. Again, his fate briefly met that of Isabella’s, who he tasked with taking on his grim duties. Outside the Grove, he came to that which had kept him alive for so many years, and burned it down, killing himself, freeing his soul from its centuries of torment. Liberation. Or so he thought. Arik, ever cunning, ever meddling, had stolen a piece of that tree, imprisoning Ouity for nigh over thirteen years within a small cutting of tree as he fruitlessly tried to nurture it back to tree form. Ouity resisted, struggling against life with all his might, until finally the combined power of the Druidic Order raised the reluctant tree up. On a swell of rage, Ouity returned back to the world. The gift of immortality the greatest curse he could now ever think of. Arik ensured that he would not be able to end himself again, then vanished, leaving Ouity to flounder in his woe. He finally decided to try to integrate with his fellow Druids once more. Again, faces had changed, leaving him feeling hopeless and abandoned. Where was Apollan? Respiren? Delfyr? His old comrades, friends, family, all gone. These things he kept close to his chest, never allowing the outside world to view his weakness. The wolf does not show its weakness. Around this time, musing about his unfortunate life on Samuel’s back, he came once more upon Isabella. Gone was the carefree, naïve young elf who he had left with his old duties. Here, standing before him, was a grim young girl who knew to fight, and lie. She wore a white jacket, just like he used to. It horrified him more than anything! He could not let her travel his path, no! Nobody else could meet this horrible, despicable place in which his mind resided. He talked, and begged, and pleaded, and cried over the coming weeks and months, trying desperately to fix the problem he had unintentionally wrought upon her. Ouity used every trick and manner of persuasion he could think of to lure her out of her shell, and fortunately for him, that included spilling his own misfortunes before her. Now, each sought to ease the other’s woes. Pity blossomed to friendship, which blossomed to love. As long as one had the other, their troubles seemed so distant, no longer pressing upon their weary souls. Ouity returned to the position of Guide with joy in his heart, intent to spend the rest of his life with the elf, who ever so gradually came to realize her own affections. Ouity’s pain is still there, as are his duties, those secret duties that only a handful of Druids have ever known of, those duties which keep him up at night, remembering the blood of countless dozens. Yet, for the first time in three hundred years, he feels at peace. Artwork
