Bristiric Origins

4IlCpgP.png

The proud Bristiric people originate from the northern regions during the early Asulonian Era. A group consisting of independent, friendly clans had erected a number of scanty settlement, to survive the harsh climate of this unrelenting region after immigrating to this newfound continent. Time passed by and the families continued to mix blood and prosper within their burgeoning home, shrouded by the magnificent and far-reaching forest. Over time, they became adept and swift hunters, as well as handy and intuitive craftsmen, due to the independence they possessed. One clan particularly distinguished itself early on, and took the reins of leadership. This family was none other than the spirited Dunhams.

As expansion and progression were made, so too the populace grew at a constant speed. Strong, enthusiastic, and able-bodied people consisted of the population and bordering settlements were soon encountered. Both diplomacy and warfare ensued. During these clashes, the Bristiric people outwitted and outfought their foes due to their handiness, fighting skill, undying courage, and loyalty to one another. Allies were forged whilst war raged on and eventually peace had befallen the Bristirish. Laden with booty and newly claimed lands, the Bristiric people had found a new passion and thirst for warfare, and developed a heavily militaristic attitude.

The proto-Bristmen soon captured the attention of Oren, who began to initiate diplomacy with the tribe and its leaders. They desired to begin trading and to expand their borders through peaceful and subtle means. The Bristmen did not protest and soon were introduced to the powerful Horen Dynasty, whilst being an autonomous vassal. Missionaries were sent to the tribal lands to establish monasteries and a powerful zeal for the Creator. The Bristmen gained a newfound religious fervor for the “One True Faith” and the religion became very popular within these holdings, having never been so openly worshipped in the past.

Along with religion, the Orenians had brought with them a written language, which the Bristmen adopted and utilized immediately to create an ambitious new  law that stated no women or children would be harmed during times of war. The excerpt is taken from the “Law of the Innocents” as stated below.

“Women may not be killed by a man in any way. Neither by slaughter or by any other death. Nor by poison. Nor in water. Nor in fire. Nor by any beast. Nor in a pit. Nor by dogs. But shall die in their own lawful beds.”

After a consensus had met and discussed the law, all tribes swore to obey by it. As a result, this act exerted the point that Bristmen was the most superior and civilized people within this bitter, northern region. All others soon began paying homage to them and were put under their jurisdiction in the form of vassalization.

Soon, all conflicts drew to a close, and peace had befallen the Bristiric. Deep friendships were conceived with neighboring tribes and technological advancements were made. During this time, the Dunham Clan began to rally further influence and power, and become the major leading family of the powerful tribe. A time of prosperity and reconciliation had emerged, and cultural growth and unification occurred. Traditions and holidays were established, festivals, grand hunts, and feasts were held, and art and sculpted figures were carefully made to celebrate their Bristmen ancestors as well as leaders.

Soon, however, a courier was dispatched to the Bristmen, bringing word of the exodus that was to come. The messenger also stated that the Emperor had issued three large ships to hold and bring the Bristiric people to the fabled, newfound land which the people of Asulon sought. During the migration to Anthos, a deadly, unrelenting storm had risen, and washed away one of the three heavy ships. However, due to the craftiness and ingenuity of the Bristiric people, the two remaining vessels managed to stay afloat, but were unfortunately separated during the extensive voyage.

Having arrived in this untrodden, fertile continent, the Dunham Clan and their fellow Bristiric tribesmen scattered into the northern reaches of Oren. Most pursued careers of soldiery. Though, they were apart, it is told that the remaining Bristmen continued to hold their cultural and traditional practices in high esteem and freely exercised it within their homes.

After the fall of the Horen Dynasty and the rise of Slavic Kings eventuated, William of the Dunham family managed to receive a portion of land after the charismatic youth achieved a number of key military successes against lesser claimants and rump lordship-states, stabilizing the Ruskan and Renatian Kingdoms, especially in their outer reaches. Then-Crown Prince Ostromir granted unto him a barony in acclamation to these heroic victories, declaring Cavan an entitled Dunham family possession permanently. Having risen his family into prominence, William Dunham now plans to reunite his scattered, yet hearty folk and revive and spread the vibrant Bristiric culture.

Bristiric Appearances and Traits

Bristmen are white of skin, their body rippling with hair and muscles. Their best are generally tall, with charming features, and their worst below-average height, terrorizing lumberjack-types not unlike taller versions of dwarves, with all the same finesse for ale and rum. Their hair is curly and dark, as are their eyes.

Bristmen are a hardy and courageous people, highly patriotic and willfull, remaining zealous and loyal at all times. They are prideful of their ancestral and historical roots. However, they still remain relatively hospitable.

Bristiric Traditions and Practices

The Bristiric culture transcends from that of the spirited northern culture, developed and fostered over the years in which Asulon was inhabited. Generally gruff, athletic, and powerful, the Bristiric people engage themselves in physical activities daily. Most are combat-ready and are able to wield an axe or longsword with the finesse of a veteran bannerman or knight. Bristmen are also naturally handy and clever, and are known for forging weapons and creating effective mantels and other siege equipment.

Brists also use this skill to practice unique forms of art, such as sculpting and music. Being highly loyal, sculptures were often erected to commemorate tribal leaders and important figures of authority, some of these relics are still preserved and displayed today. The ardent folk of Cavan still concoct such sculptures to celebrate their people’s heroic deeds today. Music remains a beautiful aspect of Bristiric culture and many are stunned by the tunes the Brists are able to perform. Their favored instruments include the tympanum, harp, and the crowd. Singers also are a function. Brooches are worn to symbolize status, which is highly regarded, along with honor.

Customarily, the Bristiric people also have a strong oral tradition, sanctioning frequent storytelling, and grooming most Bristmen into passionate and eloquent speakers. A Brist’s voice is symbolic and meaningful. Without his/her ability of speech, a Brist is nothing, cast away from society entirely. When banished or disowned, a Bristiric person’s tongue is cut. Such a dreadful punishment is branded only to those who commit the most heinous of crimes, the only other comparable retributions being only severe torture and execution.

As typical of northerners, the Brists have hefty appetites, generally gorging themselves in various types of meat, such as chicken, beef, and salmon. Avidly drinking is another common aspect of the life of a Bristman, and the ales and meads these people produce are praised by all. Public festivities and events are commonly held. Feasts are spectacular and immense and so too are the hunts that result in the creation of marvelous hides and a profuse amount of game, which feeds all the populace for many days.

Come the age of sixteen, boys are proclaimed men, after partaking in a trial of arms against their father, uncle, or other notable figure in their family. Promptly, they must forge a weapon and swear to uphold the ideals of their family and Creator. The families of these new young men throw feasts in their honor. The families of these new young men throw feasts in their honor.  During these festivities, a speech must be performed, professing enthusiasm towards serving one’s family and current liege lord, and simultaneously swearing an oath. The youngster would also be obligated to proclaim his devotion to the holy church and divine sect of Bristiric religious customs. Revered and official scripture would also need to be memorized and discerned fully.

At the tantamount age, girls would be recognized as women. These Bristiric females underwent trials of endurance, via foraging resources, such as berries, driftwood, and etc., and hunting small game, often accompanying youth and teaching them the ways of the land, allowing offspring to procure minor experiences with conflict. A bash would be held for these women as well, generally not filled with the grandiose and eminency of a male’s ceremony. Those attending were also ordinarily females, as opposed to the wide presence of both man and woman.

The lack of sacrifices disturbs me.

Lord Prior Zacarias smirks quite Bristirly, his face dimming in the candlelit atmosphere as he retorts.

"The Church af' Oren cannot guarantee th' safety or vitality af' non-humans beholden ta' heathen theologies," he stated in a calculating, almost arrogant tone, clearly one at such agreement with the rugged nature of the Bristmen.

"An' yet th' Priory en' Cavan welcomes warmly all who'ed' become one wit' said faith."

He continues faintly, preoccupied with his examination of ancient religious Bristiric texts and law.  "But cross our lord, an' die nailed to a tree."
