NEW PLAYER GUIDE TO APPLYING AS A HUMAN Written by @Draeris and @edelos The first thing you’ll want to do when joining the LotC community, of course, is apply to the server - and honestly, this is the most stressful part of joining LotC. What if you don’t know enough lore? What if you don’t get accepted? To avoid losing sleep over these questions, we will give you several tips to almost certainly pass. We’ll be starting from the parts after the basics - with Character Race, Gender, Age, and the rest. Note: You should already know the definition of Powergaming and Metagaming, and fill all of LotC’s other OOC requirements, before using this guide. Character Name and Culture Human names are pretty safe, since 90% of the ones you’d think of will work. You can spice up your application, however, with some neat tricks like picking an LotC culture. IMPORTANT NOTE: To play a Human noble, you need to have acquired prior permission from the head of that house to make a character in it (like if you want to be James Pruvia, you need to ask the head of House Pruvia). Here’s a basic list of the Orenian cultures that we’ve collected; Crownlander/Heartlander - Crownlanders, called by many names, occupy the heart of the Holy Orenian Empire (also called Oren), currently centered around the Imperial Capital of Helena. Helena, which has been fought for over the course of a few different wars (Like the War of Two Emperors, and the AIS War), is ruled by the Emperor of the Holy Orenian Empire. He rules with the help of the Imperial Government, a large bureaucracy with many different ministries - think of Harry Potter’s Ministry of Magic for a basic idea - and with a Senate to decide its laws - think of the US Senate for this, or maybe the British one. Helena is the largest city in Arcas, and the people there live in townhomes or slums and fight for the best accommodations. The Crownlanders are bureaucratic and capitalist to the core - if a fast-paced meritocracy where anyone can rise with some good old-fashioned effort is your cup of tea, look no further. Crownlander cultural names are based loosely off of the British Empire, and we’ve added a list of some typical names to help inspire you if you love that idea (most Orenian names are from British Empire-English); Joseph Carl Reeds Edmund Hastings Martin Desmond Green Anton Morgan Mary Jane A lot of Crownlander names, we’ve noticed, have middle names as well, so keep that in mind. Kaedreni/Rhoswenii - The Kaedreni, who occupy the Commonwealth of Kaedrin, find their capital in the City of Owynsburg, and their noble court is centered in the lavish Varoche Palace. Ruled by an elected King, who chooses a regent in the Governor-General, the Kaedreni are steeped in traditional ideals and live a more rural and court-centered life than their Crownlander allies. Until recently, their capital was the City of Ves, which collapsed after the War of Two Emperors. They take the same first names as their kings three hundred years ago (or seven real-life years!), and are focused on a peaceful, happy lifestyle centered around vineyards, farms, and countryside villas. If the Crownlanders are city folk of the British Empire, the Kaedreni are the French aristocrats or countryside of the Napoleonic Empire. If this sounds like it’s for you, here are some typical names - which are usually in the style of older English or French; Thomas Peter Laurence Robert Lorena Louis Mariana Anna Julia Lavinia Hildegard Note that in Kaedrin, many families are named after the lands they rule, or the places they were from. Some notable places in Kaedrin for you to use if you want to go this route are Guise, Mt. Saint Catherine, Ves, Rillsworth, Aldenburg, and Owynsburg. If you’re thinking of something else for your character, try names that sound like they could be villages or towns! Waldenian/Haeseni - The Waldenians of now-extinct Waldenia, and the Haeseni of Hanseti-Ruska, are the last of the Imperial Humans that we’ll be going over. Think of this as a more low-medieval Dark Ages setting, living in thatched huts that surround aged stone castles. They live in the frigid northern reaches of Oren/Arcas, where the population is thinly spread, but hardy and tight-knit. Here are some names we collected; Ludvik Edvard Heinrik Franz Gertrude Ekaterina Character Race After your character name comes race. Since we’re covering how to apply as a human, we’re just going to put good old Human here. You can get a little tricky with it by putting Human – [Culture], if you really want. Character Gender and Age Next is your character’s gender and age. Gender discrimination is slowly being eliminated in the Crownlands and Kaedrin, so don’t let it factor into your choice too much - play what feels right to you. Age, however, is important. Anything older than 30-ish is middle aged, and anything over sixty is ancient. While humans can live to be a hundred, it almost never happens in Oren (and a lot of people tend to frown upon it). Physical Description and Personality Traits A strong would-be knight or General; a thin, intelligent librarian-type; a beautiful maiden. Humans can be anything and everything, and are easily our pick for the most versatile race in LotC. Imagine the type of person you’d be in a such a world; are you a hopeless romantic searching for love through, or maybe a strong, silent agent of the Empire? Here’s where you put it into words. Tell the reviewer how tall you are, what you’d be wearing, if you’re lean, muscular, or even fat, and basic things like eye color and hair color. Brownie points if you add things like smile lines and wrinkles with age. Once you’ve done that, move onto personality traits - most Orenians, for example, are Canonists, or devout followers of the Church of the Canon, and believe in God. Many Orenians are ruthless money-makers, or bookish reader-writers, or avid swordsmen - this is where you’d put their favorite things to do, their religion of choice, and how they feel about such things as the political parties (in Oren that’s the Josephites and Everardines), noble houses (for example, in Kaedrin there’s Pruvia, Helvets, Armas and de Falstaff, to name just a few - and each rule over different counties, baronies, and duchies), and the military (in the Holy Orenian Empire, that’s the ISA - Imperial State Army). Character Biography Here, use the information we’ve given you about your starting location of choice - whether it be Helena or Owynsburg or anything in between - and write up a biography of your character. You can talk about how their parents were farmers in Ves, but passed away in the War of Two Emperors, and so you’ve left home to find a path of your own. You can talk about how you grew up as a street urchin in the streets of Helena, but you made it out of the slums - and now you have the whole world as your oyster. Take your favorite Dungeons and Dragons ideas, or what you imagine as the coolest plot of a personal character in such an era, and write some ideas - then turn those ideas into a story. Roleplay Scenario You’re in the final stretch. This should be easy with what you’ve got so far - now think about the scenario they gave you, and imagine how you’d respond. What might your stalwart warrior do or say? What about your fair lady, just stepping off your carriage? Don’t sweat it too much, just make sure it sounds reasonable! Skin If you didn’t already have a skin, the Skin Archive (Link to that here) has a bunch of basic, free-to-use skins. Otherwise, just make sure you have one that makes sense - a medieval, or 13th to 18th century, human! After you’re Accepted Congratulations! You made it! When you first join the server, a Cloud Temple Monk from the Community Team should be around to help - just go ahead and talk to them, they’ll help you learn how to play LotC, and then you can ask them to direct you to the area of your choice. Also make sure to read the New Player Guide, which covers the basics of RP and PVP mechanics on LotC, as well as how to improve in a huge variety of areas. (Here’s where we get to shill for Kaedrin because we wrote a guide lol) Want to be part of one of the most roleplay meritocracy-centric nations in Arcas (Kaedrin)? Getting involved with our community, at least, is pretty easy, and after you’re done with the CT Monks we can help with some more advanced Roleplay, or RP, guidance. All you need to do is tell the CT Monk you want to be led to Owynsburg or Kaedrin in general, and they’ll take you there. If you can’t find any of us in the city when you arrive, just hit us up on discord! Louis, upon hearing of the Elven publication, sends an anonymous letter to the Silver City with a copied Vitennan announcement cutout. Attached too, of course, is a briefly but strongly-worded dissertation on the atrocities committed by the Piastdom of Vitenna’s ruling family, the Varoches of Ves. Dear High Elves of Haelun’or, By calling Vitenna a “shed of knowledge” you imply they possess any capacity whatsoever to act in intelligent manner. Instead, their family is famously the product of sibling inbreeding, a crime in your city-state, and of disingenuous attacks on a great variety of allies and enemies alike. The Varoche Duke of Adria allowed old Ves to burn. He then abandoned his children, leaving them homeless wards of the state. His sons and daughters were infamously amoral, cheating on their spouses and spawning an untold number of bastards, each illegally claiming the full rights of their forefather. His grandchildren, too, sought to undermine an Empire which had welcomed them back with open arms, before finally their crimes caught up to them and they were forced to flee the state upon which they had leeched for a great many years – hence them becoming tenants of the Korvassan wastes. I warn you out of sympathy alone – the Roaches of Ves not your friends. Warm Regards, A concerned Orenian milkman.

HIERARCHIE DU PALAIS DE RHOSWENII Or; Guidebook on the Proceedings of the Palatial Household of Kaedrin at Varoche Palace and the Hierarchies Entrenched Therein FOREWORD The majestic palace of Varoche, which sits comfortably on the side of the great Mont St. Catherine, was once home to the elected Prince of Ves, whom ruled over the republic upon which the princely office was constructed. It is now the seat of the Duke of Cathalon and his kinsmen, the House of Helvets. Their blood has laid claim to and held this palace since 1726, when Helton Helvets took upon himself the mantle of King of Kaedrin and Grand Duke of Ves. Upon his death in 1750, the crown of Kaedrin by election was granted to the Holy Orenian Emperor, Peter III. As his stalwart vassals, the House of Helvets maintain the Varoche Palace and the Duchy of Cathalon with great care, tending to its surrounding countryside and his household within the province. With the continuing growth of the Kaedreni court community as centered around the Varoche Palace, a comprehensive and updated guidebook on the etiquette and court positions of the Commonwealth has been deemed necessary by the Majordomo. ON THE HIERARCHY Simplified, the Kaedreni court can be divided into four ‘tiers’ - the King, the Duke of Cathalon, and Governor-General, the Counts, Barons, and titular nobility, the courtiers, and the court-followers. Each of these tiers are offered a variety of privileges, and of each a variety of obligations demanded. At the highest level rests the three patrons of the Commonwealth; the King, from whose gracious will the Commonwealth has continued to thrive, the Governor-General, the King’s appointee to manage the daily affairs of our fair lands, and the Duke of Cathalon, the cultural marker of the Rhoswenii peoples. In relation to the court positions of Kaedrin, the Governor-General is charged with and given the right to the creation and appointment of court positions, whilst the Duke of Cathalon may veto such creations or appointments. One might think of it most simply as this; the King is the ruler of Kaedrin; the Governor-General his regent; and the Duke the lord of Owynsburg and Varoche Palace, while also keeper of his household there. The King, the Duke, and the Governor-General are furthermore afforded the privileges of their positions, which include that to a qualified Rhoswenii food taster, to courtly orbitals otherwise, of the bearing of blades upon the hip, to private audience, and of the announcement of full styles upon entry to Kaedreni court or palatial events. The Governor-General or his approved subordinates may furthermore appoint a subordinate in the Majordomo, who is afforded his courtly rights but not privileges. While to the astute observer it should be obvious, each such aforementioned position does not require secondary court appointment. At the second level rests the nobility of the Commonwealth whose primary titles are subordinated to its realms; that is, in order of seniority, its Counts (such as the Count Rochefort), Viscounts (such as the Viscount Rillsworth), Barons, and titular lords, and includes also the immediate families of the King, the Governor-General, and the Duke of Cathalon (defined as their father, mother, siblings, and legitimate children, but not as their spouses or children otherwise). It furthermore includes the both the Lieutenant Governor and Premier of Kaedrin. They are afforded the privileges of bearing blades upon the hip, to qualified food tasters, to courtly orbitals otherwise, to private audience, and of the announcement of primary title or position upon entry to Kaedreni courts or palatial events. Historically, as a matter of formality, the landed nobility (or members of their families) have been afforded court positions of varying level - often rising and falling in such positions of prestige with their favor in the court. At the third level rests the previously-unmentioned members of the Royal Cabinet, citizens of Kaedrin that hold court positions, and nobility of the greater Empire. They are afforded the privilege of requesting private audience, and entry into semi-private courtly events. Generally, one might be granted a position at court as an award for heroism or deeds otherwise, for diligence in serving the state, for displaying supreme talent in certain fields, or to solidify one’s place among the Kaedreni elite. Any citizen of the Empire is eligible to join the third level of the Commonwealth’s court hierarchies, often more simply known as courtiers. Below this are court-followers, a nominal level which does not confer any benefits, but is instead used to refer to a courtier of a courtier – say, a man of the Baron Rillsworth’s household. ON PRIVILEGES VARIED A description of some, though not all, of the privileges one might gain from being a courtier of the household at Varoche Palace. Food Taster To watch a courtier that has been appointed a food taster test their food and drink for poison before consumption. The Bearing of Blades To wear an arm’s-length sword, sheathed in full leather, upon one’s hip whilst in Varoche Palace or Kaedreni court events otherwise. Courtly Orbitals To be assigned or transferred, at the Governor-General or his Majordomo’s discretion, subordinated courtiers outside of the normal Positions Ordinary subordinations. Private Audience To request of the Governor-General, at a court session in Varoche Palace, or at a Kaedreni court-sponsored event, a meeting with him in a more private space. The requestee shall bring no more than their own person, while the Governor-General is afforded as many as five orbitals or personal guards in such an exchange. COURTLY POSITIONS ORDINARY In this, “Ordinary” refers to the nature of the title – one that can be held and exists in any matter of relative permanence. While, obviously, one might be fired from such a position, the position is not likely to disappear completely with their removal from office, but rather be awarded to a different courtier of greater favor. A position with its title emboldened and underlined has no director but those of the first order of the court, and are classically known as the “Greater Officers of the Household”. The positions otherwise are known similarly as the “Lesser Officers of the Household”, and hold a lesser role at Varoche Palace. Of the Greater Officers, one might note clear differences in station; for instance, the Royal Archiater has a single subordinated role, while the Marshal of the Household has nine. It is obvious, intuitively, that the Marshal of the Household is of higher standing within the Palace. Similarly, a Lesser Officer subordinated to the Marshal of the Household, which is a role of greater distinction than the Royal Archiater, such as the Keeper of the Swans, is generally more favored by the court than, say, a Physician-in-Residence. The exception to this rule of thumb, of course, lies in the subordinates of the Royal Superintendent of the Arts, of which only the first four are generally court favorites, and the rest savants recruited from their varied fields. One must note that, whilst a court position is of great import, it does not factor into ones’ styles for official Imperial documentation, and extends only as far as the borders of the Province of Kaedrin in rights and privileges. Additionally, one that was a courtier of the Household of Varoche Palace, but has been discharged from their position, is one that has been found wanting – the Household at Varoche Palace, therefore, does not approve of such ostracized personages attempting to advertise their past connections to said Household, and instead warns that legal case will be brought forth should said parties disseminate false information or falsify their importance through said prior positions’ use. Majordomo First among court positions, the Majordomo is de facto the master or mistress of courtly proceedings, and can be appointed only by the Governor-General. Normally, a Majordomo might be styled Lord Majordomo, or Lady Majordomo. It is rare for a Majordomo to be without noble bloodline; in such a case, they would simply be called the Majordomo. Only the offices of and subordinated directly to the Majordomo generally come with distinct styles to be used in the third person; the exception to this being the Sergeant of Arms, which is fairly unique among all positions at the Kaedreni court. In the third person, one mentions any other positions simply by its title; the Royal Master of Ceremonies being referred to as, intuitively, the Royal Master of Ceremonies. Gentleman of the Chamber Subordinated to the Majordomo in name if not generally in practice, Gentlemen of the Chamber are often important Kaedreni courtiers or nobility that have been mandated as personal followers or valets of higher-tier nobility. Their close proximity to such members of Kaedreni society is of high distinction, and often they are entrusted as protectors of vital secrets by the noblemen they serve. If a Gentleman of the Chamber is ignoble, they are generally styled “Master ___”, a reference to their favor at court. Lady of the Chamber Subordinated to the Majordomo is the court position most commonly known as a lady-in-waiting. While the Majordomo will often transfer such debutantes and young ladies to other, more experienced ladies of the Kaedreni court, each must first pass the Majordomo’s strict requirements. The position itself, however, due to its common nature even abroad, carries little of the prestige normally associated with being directly subordinated to the Majordomo, and many ladies-in-waiting will seek other court positions to transfer to or hold in tandem. Interestingly, many Ladies of the Chamber historically have been referred to as “Lady ___”, even if they were ignoble. The court at Varoche Palace has collectively surmised that this was due to a misunderstanding in the nature of the role, that of a “lady-in-waiting” – or a young girl meant to become a lady by learning the practices of the court through her position, which is generally waiting on courtiers of greater import. Royal Master of Ceremonies The Royal Master of Ceremonies, traditionally held by a noble or ex-noble of Kaedrin, is charged with maintaining protocol within Varoche Palace. This includes, but is not limited to, the announcement of entry of the King, Governor-General, or Duke of Cathalon, the maintenance of proper decorum, the publication of rosters, and the hosting of awards ceremonies. Herald of Ceremonies Subordinated to the Royal Master of Ceremonies, a herald of ceremonies is often charged with the declaration of legend to the sitting host of palatial courts or with the announcement of entry of debutantes and young lords to banquets and balls. They are, through their position, able to meet many well-respected figures of society, and through that transition into other prestigious assignments. Food Taster Subordinated to the Royal Master of Ceremonies, the courtly position of Food Taster can be held by nearly any courtier of solid trust within the Palace. Food Tasters qualified to go before the King, Governor-General, and Duke of Cathalon, however, are limited to those with Rhoswenii blood. They are charged, of course, with tasting each course of dishes and liquors before consumption, so as to protect against assassination attempts. Royal Sergeant of Arms A post always held by nobility as a requirement, the formal style of this prestigious position is Lord ___ Sergeant of Arms - in this case, however, unlike when one might be called, for instance, Lord Helvets, one would instead be called Lord Bat Sergeant of Arms - the primary object upon their house’s coat of arms. In the Fifth Empire, and as recently as the Pertinaxi regime, the chief herald or privy seal was charged with maintaining the records of the various heraldries of the subordinated realms; in Kaedrin, that duty falls to the Royal Sergeant of Arms. The Royal Sergeant of Arms is the only man in Kaedrin allowed to certify the genealogy and new creation of state-approved coats of arms, and for that reason has been called colloquially the ‘King of Arms’. Herald of Arms A certified assistant to the Royal Sergeant of Arms, Heralds of Arms are charged generally with either ensuring Kaedreni heraldry and personal edits meet tincture, or are charged with the artistry in creating a set of arms or armorials for a House, newly-enfeoffed or otherwise, of the Commonwealth. Royal Almoner and King’s Confessor A position held traditionally by the Archbishop of Albarosa, the Royal Almoner occupies a dual role in distributing the King’s alms to the poorfolk of Kaedrin and in acting as a personal confessor to the King and Governor-General. Ducal Almoner and Duke’s Confessor A position held traditionally by the Bishop of Ves, the Ducal Almoner is charged with distributing the Duke’s alms to the poorfolk of Owynsburg and greater Cathalon, and in acting as the Duke and his inner court’s confessor. Chaplain Domestic A position often, but not always, bundled with that of the Ducal Almoner, the Chaplain Domestic is charged with the maintenance of the Chapel of Saint Robert, which rests within Varoche Palace’s grounds. Alternatively, it has often been used as a court position to give to High Pontiffs in residence in Kaedrin. Royal Bouteiller and Master of the Cellar The Royal Bouteiller, from the Auvergnat word for ‘bottle’, is charged with the confirmation of wine and spirit vintages, with introducing the Empire’s various vintages to the Kaedreni court, and with introducing Kaedreni vintages to the Imperial nobility at large. Additionally, they are charged with maintaining a respectable cellar for Varoche Palace. Court Vintner Any number of aspiring or certified vintners may be employed by the court, at its discretion, for the purposes of evaluating vintages and improving the collective taste in such matters among the court. Royal Equerry and Master of the Horse The Royal Equerry is charged with the maintenance of the various stables and horse breeding measures of the Commonwealth. As a resource well-acknowledged as of utmost importance to the continuation of both Kaedreni martial tradition among its nobility and equine culture among its people over-all, the Royal Equerry is often a trusted advisor to the Governor-General. Manager of His Excellency’s Thoroughbred Stud Subordinated to the Royal Equerry, the Manager of His Excellency’s Thoroughbred Stud is tasked with providing purebred stallions to the household of the Governor-General, for use at his discretion, and also for maintaining a selection of white show-horses for parade and travel purposes otherwise. Manager of the Mews of Cathalon Subordinated to the Royal Equerry, the Manager of the Mews of Cathalon is tasked with providing good ponies to the ladies of the court and horses to its gentlemen. Generally they operate the stable located in the central valley, and generally the quality of their steeds are found more wanting than the Thoroughbred Stud. Royal Veneur and Master of the Hunt The Royal Veneur, or Master of the Hunt, is charged with overseeing the royal and ducal hunts of Kaedrin. They are responsible for the scheduling of ISA patrols into its protected forests to prevent poaching, and responsible too for knowing and understanding the yearly migratory and hibernation patterns of boar, stag, and other animals within the Kaedreni hinterlands. Wolfcatcher Royal Subordinated to the Royal Veneur, the Wolfcatcher Royal is tasked with breeding, training, and caring for the hunting dogs maintained by Varoche Palace and its attached courtiers, and for maintaining furthermore a stock of white rabbits to be chased down between hunts. Falconer Royal Subordinated to the Royal Veneur, the Falconer Royal is charged with the breeding, training, pruning and care otherwise for the falcons and birds otherwise maintained by Varoche Palace and its attached courtiers, and for the breeding of a stock of good pigeons for said falcons to hunt. Royal Archiater and Surgeon-Apothecary Called colloquially the Court Doctor, the Royal Archiater is charged with the maintenance of the health of the various courtiers of Varoche Palace, and charged especially with the personal care of the families of the Governor-General and Duke of Cathalon. Physician in Residence A Physician in Residence is, technically, any medicus with a sustained contract with the court at Varoche Palace. While often these men and women are trained abroad, few find the Kaedreni unwilling to be permanent hosts. Royal Solicitor The Royal Solicitor acts as the chief legal advisor to the Crown, and has traditionally been held by a Rhoswenii courtier, even if they should primarily work outside of Owynsburg. Should the Crown wish to take to court its grievances, and should it not wish to hire an outside company, it is the Royal Solicitor’s obligation to make its case. Royal Surveyor of the Lands A position traditionally held by a landed noble of little domestic courtly connection, or perhaps one of errant mind, the Royal Surveyor of the Lands is assigned to such a position on the premise that they will spend little time within Owynsburg, instead travelling the varied territories of the Commonwealth and its neighbors in an effort to provide better maps to its court. Royal Superintendent of the Arts The Royal Superintendent of the Arts, traditionally held by a member of an influential noble or political family, is charged with the maintenance of the household’s arts, and with both the supervision of artists and requisitioning of the Crown the required materials for said artists’ work. The Royal Superintendent of the Arts is furthermore charged with the hosting of events and recruitment of talents in a wide variety of fields. They are also charged with the sourcing of clavichords, pianos, and harps to decorate Kaedrin’s banquet halls. Intendant of the Theatres Charged with hosting theatrical events within the Queen Annabelle Playhouse and with the maintenance of a Royal Theatre Troupe, the Intendant of the Theatres is a position traditionally granted to baseborn ladies favored by the Kaedreni elite. Poet Laureate The Poet Laureate is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of poetry, and is held in esteem for it. In past, the Court Poets of Kaedrin have most often been politically driven in their art. Master of the Duke’s Music The Master of the Duke’s Music is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of music, and is held in esteem for it. Most Kaedreni musicians found their fame in the clavichord or violin. Luthier Royal The Luthier Royal is charged with the creation of stringed instruments for the Kaedreni court - in particular, with the construction and stringing of violins, violas, violoncellos, viols, double basses, and guitars. Additionally, the Luthier Royal is charged with the maintenance and repairs of said instruments. Many Luthier Royals are also accomplished archetiers, or makers of instrument bows. Carver Royal The Carver Royal is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of stone-shaping, and is held in esteem for it. They are charged with the shaping of statues for Kaedrin’s squares and memorials, and for the Palace’s decorations. Jeweller Royal The Jeweller Royal is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of silversmithing, goldsmithing and gem-working, and is held in esteem for it. Many times, they are granted access to rare materials towards the creation of wedding bands for Kaedreni nobility trying to one-up their rivals. Forgemaster Royal The Forgemaster Royal is an individual well-known for their ability in iron and steelworking, and is held in esteem for it. Generally, this position is held by ignobly born savants of the craft, makers of fine blades and ceremonial armors for the court at large. Rarely, though, do their forges operate within the bounds of the Palace itself, and more often it’s simply the best smithy in Kaedrin at any given time. Clothier Royal The Clothier Royal is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of needleworking, and is held in esteem for it. Their tapestries often decorate Kaedreni dining halls and hallways, and their works dictate the direction of Kaedreni court fashion. Panetier Royal The Panetier Royal is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of baking, and is held in esteem for it. They have often worked as pastry chefs abroad, perfecting their art internationally before returning. Astronomer Royal The Astronomer Royal is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of stargazing, and is held in esteem for it. Sometimes, Astronomer Royals are requested to ‘read the stars’, a superstitious belief of recent import from Helena. Painter Royal The Painter is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of painting and portraiture, and is held in esteem for it. Rare is it for a Painter Royal to find themselves lacking in requests. Architect Royal The Architect Royal is an individual of wide acclaim in the field of architecture, and is held in esteem for it. Often, they are brought on as advisors to the court to build public works, and of the positions in ordinary within the court at Varoche Palace, this is the position least often filled (or rather, least often actively filled). Academic Royal Subordinated to the Royal Superintendent of the Arts, the Academic Royal is the crown’s chief advisor in the literary arts. Often, the Academic Royal is asked to act as a tutor to the young nobility of Kaedrin as well. Marshal of the Household Once an auspicious title granted to the greatest military advisors of Kaedrin, the Marshal of the Household now assumes a primarily titular role as the head of its Castellanries and more generally charged with the productive continuation of court life. He is tasked with, whilst no longer ensuring the defensibility of Varoche Palace and Owynsburg, ensuring that it is properly cared and maintained for structurally. This position has also been referred to as Helmsman of the Varoche Palace, for he is, so to speak, at the helm. Keeper of the Palace Gardens The Keeper of the Palace Gardens, colloquially called the Lady of the Vines (as, invariably, the position has been granted to ladies of the court), is tasked with the beautification of the Palace’s gardens. As Kaedrin is most famous for roses ahead of crows or dragons, the Keeper of the Palace Gardens is the most important of the subordinated positions below the Marshal of the Household. Keeper of the Swans The Keeper of the Swans, generally working hand-in-hand with the Keeper of the Palace Gardens, is charged with the safeguarding of the palatial swans - which inhabit said gardens. As swans are not native to the Commonwealth, but instead must be imported at great cost, this position occupies an honorable, if not remarkably respected, place in the court hierarchy. Keeper of the Bees The Keeper of the Bees is charged with the creation and maintenance of a palatial beehive, and with ensuring stable inflows of honey for its feasts and beeswax for its candles. Somewhat unique among the subordinate positions of the Marshal of the Household, the Keeper of the Bees is rarely allotted more than a small garden to work with. Castellan of Reden Tower Reden Tower, an infamous landmark in what was once the County of Kreden, is deeply entrenched in modern Kaedreni histories. The Castellanry of Reden Tower, while traditionally held by a man of the House de Reden, has after its assumed extinction been awarded to esteemed members of the Imperial State Army’s Fifth Brigade. Castellan of Basarab Tower Basarab Tower was named after the famed Barnabas Basarab, who contributed greatly to the improvement of Adrian society, which found a spiritual successor in the City of Ves. While any Adrians have long since left, the Castellanry of Basarab Tower is granted to courtiers of great rapport within Kaedrin’s own House of Commons, or those that have contributed to the Senate of the greater Empire. Castellan of Myre Tower Once the abode of the legendary Vessian politician of the same family name, the Castellan of Myre Tower would by tradition be granted to a man of that household. With the family’s emigration to Helena, however, it is now awarded to esteemed bureaucrats of Kaedrin. Castellan of Aldenburg Historic title of the House Marna de Aldenburg, distant relatives of Joseph I, the Castellanry of Aldenburg was traditionally held by the incumbent or would-be Baron of Aldenburg until the extinction of the main-line Marnans, and afterwards turned into an open court position. Castellan of Guise Historic title of the House de Guise, cadets of the House Ashford de Falstaff, the Castellanry of Guise is traditionally a position held by the incumbent or would-be Baron of Guise. Keeper of the Jewel House of Varoche Palace As the King is often absent, and the Kaedreni crown has historically been bundled among many other royal titles, the Keeper of the Jewel House is tasked with caring for the crown jewels of the Commonwealth, its royal and subordinated ducal robes and coronets, and the historical jewelry otherwise of the Palace. COURT POSITIONS EXTRAORDINARY Positions made for specified individuals rather than as going affairs are considered ‘extraordinary’. Positions made for limited-use circumstances, too, such as ‘Court Investigator into the Matter of the Rat-Men in the Old Vessian Sewers’, would fall under this category. Historically this has happened a great variety of times; whether it was in the appointment of a ‘Chief Solicitor for the Case of Friar Boniface’, or with the unstable ‘Grand Knight’ position (as, at any given time in the era, Kaedrin might have had fifteen knights or it might have had zero), such positions were generally in relation to important duties rather than court favor. Guidebook created by order of the Lady Majordomo, Anna Maria of the House of Pruvia, for the 1767 updates to the Household at Varoche Palace.

Young Albert de Falstaff, coming across the word while being given a lesson in Modern Tribal Cultures by his rather famed Archbishop-tutor, asks if he can "inner-coose" in the fields and gardens of Kaedrin too. @Draeris

Citizen Louis Entier, whilst unable to properly read the legalese within this document, claps for the propagation of good Kaedreni economic morals!
-
Louis Entier YAWNS upon hearing of the blatant cultural appropriation of the Kaedreni national symbol, and prepares to found Names Spelled with K instead of C Construction Company in Kaedrin to compete.
-
“I know a knife ear, so I can’t be racist against them,” nods Louis Entier wisely. “Checkmate, Josephites.”

Tbh, not letting us have basic flintlocks for duels is like blocking off any creation of MArts or enchantments or anything because it’s easily powergamed. It’s lame, nobody that would be affected by guns is in the communities arguing against them, and if I can’t use guns to pistol duel then really there’s no reason to live anymore. Being serious, though, the slippery slope thing is dumb. We have to get everything approved by LT anyways – they can just put it through a trial phase and if it doesn’t work then say “ok, rolled back,” or if it does work but they don’t want it to go forward, they just peg the new tech lock there. A world in which a mage can hit me with a tsunami or massive laser beam after five emotes but I can only shoot a crossbow bolt after three is hilariously unbalanced, and it’s a shame that we’re still having this argument instead of just giving it a chance.
